It's been years. You can fall in love with someone else during that time. A thing I have come to figure out is while you can still have the blues from your first love, you can move on. I have started to fall out of love with these what if situations while the person who loves the protagonist gets hurt in the process. Years away from the first love is a long time to just leave the fiance to pursue someone who has become a stranger over the years despite familiarity. Edward deserved better. If the protagonist could not answer how she loved Edward then the guy is better off without being strung along. I would rather that this took place right after the engagement so that the protagonist could have time to process the situation and then conclude she could marry her fiance without any regrets. Or yeah the ending changed a little so it is not rushed over three days.
