i feel like Ben is the one character that you can't help but love. I know he's evil at the beginning and all, but all he ever wanted was to feel needed. He's a sad man who had one thing in his life and he got her killed for a man he never even met.
@VonSnootingham

I agree wholeheartedly. Ben is one of my favorite character of all time. He starts off so horrible, but redeems himself and ends up being so great. And he's one of the most complex characters on the show too. It's true what they say: "All the best cowboys have daddy issues." Ben is defined by the relationship between father and child. His biological father, Roger, was a bastard. Ben, as a child, did everything he could to please his father, but Roger never cared for him at best, and was hateful and abusive at worst. Eventually, Ben got fed up, found a new family in the Others, and killed Roger. Next, Ben lived with the Others and worked for Widmore, who was his next father figure. (sorta. this one was kinda weak.) But even though Ben did what he was told, and what he thought was right, Widmore was a commanding, heartless bastard. Eventually Ben got fed up with him too, so he deposed and banished Widmore. Finally, Ben was in charge, and he was only accountable to Jacob. Ben led the Others both in a way to ensure his own power, but also to increase the Others' power as a whole. He was trying to get Jacob's attention and show him he was doing a good job for his people. Once again, he was trying to show his worth to and please his father, this time Jacob. And as Ben said, "He didn't even care." When Ben finally met and confronted Jacob, he asked him, "What about me?" and Jacob responded, "What ABOUT you?" Jacob was just as negligent as Roger was. So Ben did was he does best: he killed his father. This father/child relationship also expressed it self in him from the other side: In his relationship with his own daughter, Alex, and in the relationship with his people, to whom he was supposed to play leader and father figure. In both relationships, how did he act? Controlling, cold, distant, abusive. To him, this was how fathers acted, and so this was how he behaved. So yeah, Ben had daddy issues. Maybe he was written by Steven Spielberg.
@ronnig4009

Ben was never EVIL at the beginning...he had an agenda and MO of his own...he was not EVIL though. He was doing what he needed to do to survive, is that any different than what Locke or Jack or Sawyer or Kate had been doing all along? How about Sayid and such? They all did things to survive and make their lives okay...Ben was doing the same thing. But because we, as an audience, were led to hate him because we were coerced into believing the "Others" were evil creatures, we automatically hated BEN too!

But he killed John Locke :(
@victorpradha9946
3 жыл бұрын
Never LOVED Ben. I appreciated how complex and nuanced his character was. Never "loved" him. He was a murdering, manipulative, exploitative, possessive, emotionally, psychologically and physically abusive person. He let his own daughter die (saying she meant nothing to him). He killed John Locke (out of pure envy over his specialness and jealousy that John was replacing him as leader). He did that weird obsessive thing with Juliet. He was running to join FLocke even though he saw FLocke kill everyone in the Temple, Bram's entire team, and who knows how many others. He brutalized Sawyer and Kate just so he could manipulate Jack into performing surgery to save his life. He emotionally manipulated Jack for the same reason. He messed with John about the button in the hatch NOT doing anything because he lied and said he never entered the numbers or pushed the button. THIS caused John to prevent Eko from pushing the button which caused the Island to get discovered by Widmore's freighter people which caused the Kahana to be blown up (thanks to Ben killing Keamy even though he knew that Keamy had the dead man's trigger for the bomb on the Kahana). Ben was the reason Keamy's assault team slaughtered all those people hiding at Dharmaville (and earlier Carl, Rousseau and Alex). Ben is the ultimate PoS!
@DarknessIsThePath
2 жыл бұрын
@@victorpradha9946 All of that is explained though. Part of it was because of the abuse and blame his father did to him. Another part was that The Others, and most likely Widmore and Richard taught him how to manipulate people after he was "cleansed" by the Temple Water, Richard even said that once he is saved from dying by the water, he would never be the same person and would forget most of what happened to him regarding Sawyer and Co. Lastly is the desperation of preventing another woman to die at childbirth just like his mother did when he was born. While I dont think it is entirely personal, I think that pushed him over the edge of doing evil things to people. Deep down he was never truly evil, otherwise he would have never tried to atonne for his deeds, and ofc that will take him quite a while which is why he decided not to move on at the end.

I've been studying a little music theory the past few months...I finally realized why the music in this scene is so powerful. This quiet version of Ben's theme (Dharmicide) is in G major. In the first instance (the purge) the song plays until just before it should resolve to a g major chord (going home to the tonic). Instead, it leaves the piece unresolved, instead cutting to a sinister variation of the theme when Ben tells Richard to leave his father's body out in the van. 3 SEASONS LATER.... at Ben's most emotional moment of redemption...when being told that he's accepted, that he can belong.... it FINALLY RESOLVES to the G chord!!! Giacchino..... what a genius.... EDIT: This version, that appears in Dr. Linus is actually transposed up a half-step to Ab major

Ben was such a dedicated leader, he sacrificed his own daughter's life to make sure the Island stayed out of the hands of Charles Widmore. Huh what an interesting take actually, you present a view of him that'd literally be like how his side saw him as, not as an evil vilian but a genuine dedicated leader, with faults yes but not evil,, maybe your right maybe he was more so evil just from the Island Survivors perspective, that being said he absolutely did some selfish borderline evil things, I mean aside from Killing Locke who by that time was probably his Quasai best friend even, I just cant get over that scene man I didn't see it coming at all I mean to talk someone out of suicide in a moment of huge despair, only to then to choke him Locke of all people out from behind especially a man like Locke who went through so much, his last words being "I don't understand" is so tragic like wait How the hell I cant die here after everything that happened on the Island, Ben is truly wicked for crossing that line, but that being said from the Others/Island protectors perspective he was mostly a good guy and a genuine good leader/defender of the Island I guess for sure, amazing character regardless.

As much as I love this redemption for Ben, he was wrong about Jacob not caring about him. Despite all of Ben's plotting, scheming, and even the deaths that he caused (before Alex) Jacob never gave up on him, and he did care. Whatever rivilary he and Widemore created, he wanted them to clean up their own mess, even if that meant Ben being taken away by Keamy and his men. He wanted Ben to chose surrendering to Keamy for Alex, and even though Keamy was a psycho, I think he would have let her go. I think Keamy just killed Alex to show Ben he wasn't messing around and would do anything to bring him back to the "real world". Even when Ben got his cancerous tumor, that was a test for Ben that Jacob set up. He sent Ben a spinal surgeon of excellence for crying out loud lol. He wanted Ben to approach Jack the honest way and ask him for help. But instead, Ben chose to play games and not invite Jack over for lemonade lol.

I love how Ben starts as this terrifying psychopath, but by the end he's just everyone's favorite cinnamon roll.

I really love this scene but I can't get past how Illana reminds me a little of Ana Lucia. Maybe I'm wrong and it's just a coincidence that both actresses playing Ana and Illana kind of look similar... but is there a possibility that Illana might be Ana Lucia's sister?

Such a nice scene. Ben finally found a friend. Too bad she died next episode.

I really hated Ben and I think he really deserved and needed that beating from Jack at the end of season 3. But the way the show showed him being broken down and then with this episode they gave him one of the best arcs ever.

Yeah Ben, tossing that make-shift shovel in the air won't catch her attention. LOL The escape was too funny, but the exchange between the two after moved me.

Ben should have hooked up with Ilana, and she could have helped Ben and Hurley take care of the Island.

Her death was stupid and repetitive (the same gag as Artz), obviously rushed, and Ben never found his childhood girlfriend. Loose threads that could have tied together.

So Illana spared Ben and her reward for doing so was that the Island...was finished with her!
