This is just friggin sad. I can't believe having lost a cat you would do studies like this. Why not ASK grieving humans who are WILLING to participate in a study and do MRIs or CTs or whatever on their grieving brains? As a grief and loss counsellor for pet owners I'm just completely gutted by this study. I was hoping to see something on the HUMAN brain, like I said by ASKING humans who would be more than happy to find out more about their own grief. Gosh, it's going to take me ages to get over what you do to animals now. :(

Aside from the cruelty of the experiment, it is also flawed. She wanted to see how the animal would behave once the partner is permanently gone (like death) but changed nothing in the experiment. How is the animal supposed to know their partner is gone permanently? Not letting them see their partner after triggering the lever only incites more suffering on the animal in her experiment. Horrible experiment.

The study didn't really prove much about grief, other than that animals do indeed have valid bonds with each other - which is something we already knew. The study is animal cruelty, and I don't think it went into enough detail to even be called a study. To me it seems more like a curious and cruel experiment. Grief is "simply frustration" is also kind of an offensive thing to say to people who have experienced a huge loss. To boil it down to just frustration when it's a complex lifelong experience...?

Efforts of pressing the lever is quantitative. But deducing the pushing of the lever as comparable to mourning is an absolutely subjective and qualitative leap. The rodents likely Express it differently in natural environments. Also the first experiment with the vole seeing its partner is likely panic induced. Comparing that likely habit-forming experience to when the vole partner is absent reveals more about the ignorance about grief and probably voles that anything 'creative' and 'scientific'. Just because it is measurable doesn't make it useful. Pretty pointless study. There are ethical ways to study grieving people. Talk to them. Finally, conversations about grief from the perspective of time can surely be studied. There are entire cannons on the subject of perceived time and its science. Ugh

There are only a relatively small number of people on this earth who have the kind of expertise (that you worked hard to acquire btw thank you) to even begin to tackle this type of issue. Not only is this work fascinating, it is such a great contribution. First because of the level of suffering and its universality, and second because, even though it is so painful, it is significantly different than depression. These findings will not only help those suffering from grief, but also help in research of other mental health disorders by providing something to contrast. Thank you for all your work and thank you for sharing it on Tedx.

“Grieve thou not over the troubles and hardships of this nether world, nor be thou glad in times of ease and comfort, for both shall pass away. This present life is even as a swelling wave, or a mirage, or drifting shadows. Could ever a distorted image on the desert serve as refreshing waters? No, by the Lord of Lords! Never can reality and the mere semblance of reality be one, and wide is the difference between fancy and fact, between truth and the phantom thereof. Know thou that the Kingdom is the real world, and this nether place is only its shadow stretching out. A shadow hath no life of its own; its existence is only a fantasy, and nothing more; it is but images reflected in water, and seeming as pictures to the eye.” - Abdu’l-Baha
