It's much closer than the famous Raja Ampat and almost not visited by tourists. The islands of Labengki and Sombori, only 1.5 hours by boat from the coast of Sulawesi, are just as extraordinarily picturesque. Their azure and emerald lagoons, hidden behind pointed karst rocks, are especially beautiful.
An unusually interesting person, Habib Najar Buduha, also lives here, the founder of The Giant Clam Conservation Marine Park. The giant clams are the members of the clam genus Tridacna that are the largest living bivalve mollusks. It was in the tridacna that the world's largest Lao Tzu pearl was found, weighing more than 6 kg. Such shells have long been used in Catholic churches as baptismal fonts for infants, and are now in great demand in China as substitutes for ivory. Tridacna meat is considered an exquisite delicacy in Asian countries. In addition, the mantle of some species forms fantastic patterns that shimmer with fluorescent colors, which makes them valuable in the aquarium hobby.
Habib, together with his associates and volunteers, collected more than 8 thousand shells and placed them in marine reserves near his village of Toli-Toli on the coast of Sulawesi and near the nearby islands of Labengki and Sombori. The Giant Clams, filtering tons of water per day, bring enormous benefits to the marine biosphere, promoting the growth of corals and phytoplankton, the main food for fish and the source of more than 50% of the oxygen in the earth's atmosphere. Preserving these valuable shellfish will help restore corals in this beautiful region of Indonesia.
