In this weeks video I lose my dog for the first time. After spending quite some time calling for her, I am happy to report she came back allowing me to end up playing ham radio and activating the summit for SOTA (Summits On The Air).
This was a very short hike, about 1/3 of a mile but it had some very good views to the south into the Inland Empire of Southern California. Being next to the Verizon cell tower created some RF issues while on 20m for a while but I was still able to make QSO's (radio contacts) with more than enough operators to activate the peak on HF (High Frequency) and VHF (Very High Frequency) via the Elecraft KX2 and my Yaesu VX-8DR HT (Handy Talkie).
Though i spent a short time on the mountain I was able to create a couple instructional videos. Check out the videos on "How to Deploy the HQD Speaker Wire Antenna", "How to Upload SOTA Contacts Fast", and others linked in the cards within the video.
For the list of gear and to support my channel please visit my website at www.kg6hqd.us and click the "HQD GEAR" page. Every little bit helps me keep making these videos with plans to expand into other areas of Ham Radio.
Most importantly, if you were entertained or even learned something from this video or others on my channel, I'd ask you to SUBSCRIBE and click the bell for notifications. I upload a new video every week and am always interested in topics from the community so please comment, like, and find me on my other social media channels like Twitter and Instagram @KG6HQD.
Lastly, the ARRL Field Day is approaching and getting out to operate your ham radio in the qrp portable mode will help improve not only your on air skills, but the process to setup and deploy your ham radio kit when in the field. Think of SOTA as a daily opportunity to setup and practice your emergency communications tasks in confining and unique spaces.
