Brilliant video. Nostalgic for me as I grew up as a young trainspotter at Cheadle Heath, Edgeley and Tiviot Dale. Cheadle station on the Stockport to Altrincham section really deserves reopening!

Excellent video. Music was weird but hey ho. Tiviot Dale station was actually directly in the centre of Stockport as opposed to Stockport Edgeley which is now just Stockport. It was very handy for people living in that particular area of the town to use for trips into Manchester Central. Calling at the stops mentioned in the video by David. Imagine all the traffic taken off the road if this finally gets approval for the metrolink extension from East Didsbury to Stockport Interchange ? Looking forward to seeing the next installment and we'll done indeed ! Great effort and research David

Another nice video! Regarding the hospital car-park that you said you weren’t supposed to be on, that definitely would have been the case for the site’s previous use - the nuclear bunker for Manchester (Cheadle Regional War Room). It included sidings located just where you filmed.

Thanks for the video. Don't know why but I didn't realise how close railway went to Cheadle. Can't believe there's no station when it's that close to the centre. Crying out for the tram/train.

I'm at Cheshire Line Tavern. Took some finding as I was looking around the Cheadle station. I must have switched off when you started talking about Cheadle North. Still can't get over how there isn't a station at Cheadle. Suppose the single line won't help anything.

And -- I'm not sure how much people know -- you might also perhaps guess from the names of the signal-boxes -- when Stockport Tiviot Dale was a station, the one which now remains was called Stockport Edgeley.

There are traces of Albert Park Station on both Lapwing Lane and Hague Avenue iirc And the fact that there's a Station Road in Heaton Mersey bodes well for the future The Warrington line from Skelton junction is still there though unused just FYI

@@DavidFrankal the tunnel collapsed during the construction of the m60 but the alignment is just to the north of the m60 you can see the top of the Eastern end of the second tunnel in Google Street View at 53.414136,-2.159329 the bricking at the bottom of the natural rock used to be the top of the tunnel portal but they filled this in when they built the road. And the platforms are just east of this around 53.414744,-2.157537 and if you look on satellite View on Google maps you can see the curve of the platforms where there is less dense foliage. Also the Western end of the second tunnel is located under a footpath just before it crosses over the m60 at 53.412831,-2.162102 and you can probably follow down this cutting to get to the Eastern end of the first tunnel but I didn't walk down to this when I was there as I ran out of time and the western end of this tunnel was removed during the recent construction of the A5145 but there are some photos online from when it was unearthed.

It seems lines closed killed by trams in 20s then buses killed trams then buses cut back so cars jams the roads Business's leave then to regenerate area Trams using rail routes come back to improve area Perhaps routes should held open to avoid building and blocking future use of route bridges etc. As a Londoner im awsre that Docklands Light Railway uses bits of old railway in parts of its routes and some former railways ate held by GLA as strategic corridors for train tram dlr or national rail.. Sometimes seems we have to go full circle !!

If the Fallowfield line was still open today it would be very useful for Freightliners to avoid passing through the congested section of Manchester Oxford Road and Piccadilly would it not? Why then was it closed? 🤔
@DavidFrankal
4 жыл бұрын
I think the current freightliners through Castlefield are running from Crewe to Trafford Park, so the Fallowfield Loop would be of little use to them. The line closed at the same time as the Woodhead Line

David Frankal great video but your comment is not quite correct - Freightliners could’ve accessed the WCML from Trafford Park, the Fallowfield Loop, Gorton, Ashburys, Phillips Park and Miles Platting Jncs. Manchester Victoria and the Chat Moss Line to Newton-le-Willows. This was the way the Freightliner to Holyhead took back in the day. The Fallowfield line closed in October 1988 at the time of the Piccadilly resignalling / remodelling. Woodhead had closed as a through route in July 1981.

I would corroborate Megamans's comments. For a few years in the early 80s I lived adjacent to the loop line in Chorlton. By this time traffic was very sparse, and I can only remember seeing 2 or 3 trains, all class 40 hauled container workings. Of course, there were other trains that I would hear at night. The loop line pmrovided a very useful diversionary route in the event of congestion or problems on the direct Castlefield line, but this was presumably insufficient to justify retention, particularly following closure of the Woodhead route.

Shame the Cheadle Heath section despite still in use be a complete ghost line that could be used to divert freight trains to and from Trafford Park by connecting it to the West coast mainline before Cheadle Hulme junction. So freights could reach the closed Trafford Park Delta junction via a new Mersey crossing bridge where the old remains still visible and connect the line to East Didsbury tram stop. The issue of a tram-train sistem I think is the very low gauge due to the wires. Battery energised trams could be a solution to put an end to this problem. Freight trains should be hauled by bi-mode locomotives such as class 88 though. Just my idea to divert freights away from heavily congested Castlefield junction to Edgeley corridor. Very nice video and explanation.
@DavidFrankal

Diverting freight trains away from Castlefield definitely needs to be made a priority, but I believe there's a short section of abandoned line connecting the West Coast Mainline to the Manchester - Liverpool route near Glazebrook that would do the job much more easily!
@spiritofcantaolisboa-p8871
4 жыл бұрын
The issue is the no direct access to Trafford Park that is made from the East where Delta junction used to be. Is time for Greater Manchester to switch tram-train system in my opinion, not just because converted tram lines are strategic for freight divertions but eliminate single track sections though, such as busy Navigation Road and Newton Heath and Moston, the last one a waste of time as the bins traffic only run Monday to Friday twice a day.
@DavidFrankal

Point well made. TfGM are eyeing expansion via tram-train so when the required vehicles enter service then turning those sections into shared track could become a real possibility. It's notable that the almost identical K5000s in Cologne run tram-train services to Bonn (I think the UK just has much stricter regulations on tram and train separation). One problem may be the loading guage, however. Would a freight train not scrape the edges of the Metrolink platforms at Newton Heath & Navigation Road?

Oh David David David! You are clearly an intelligent and knowledgeable guy but your overall design, layout and narration of this video is poor and confusing. You need to hold our hand as viewers a little more with more detailed descriptions and better graphics, and definately loose the pacman style computer game music. You can do better, if not for yourself, then for us!
