I took a class from Lou Harrison at San Jose State. Ethno-Musicalogy sounded interesting to me. I knew he was very important in 20th century music, but in 1965, i think, he blew me away into another World. I found a brilliant, compassionate man that wanted to pass on to his students the wonder of Eastern cultures and their music. He told us that the music of these cultures should never be thought of as"folk music" or " folk instruments". This was their classical music and we should think of it the same way we thought of Mozart. My experiences with Lou Harrison opened my mind to all the music of the World. He was one of my great teachers.

You're so lucky. I'm glad you got to take a class from the guy. I'm not one to get star struck, but I think Lou Harrison is one of the only people on earth that if I had met him before he died I would have been in tears.

I just had a sad thought...how many people will go through life never hearing this exquisite music? I've been fortunate enough to take a path that brought me here..and since you're reading this you have been fortunate as well.

Best fusion of western and eastern music I ever heard. Subtle. Good taste, a lot of knowledge of baroque and asian musical patterns. Mellancholy, joy, absolutely beautiful.

"....Jhala (Hindi: झाला, [dʒʱaːlaː]) is a term in Hindustani classical music which denotes the fast-paced conclusions of classical compositions or raga. It is often characterized by the overwhelming of the melodic component by the rhythmic component. This is sometimes effected by the rapid striking together of the chikari between notes....."

Playdo, thank you for this upload! Wonderful stuff! Wow! I feel like I must have been living under a rock never to have heard of this man before! Thanks to Bill McGlaughlin's "Exploring Music" show that aired this week, 10/26/16, I now know about this musical treasure, named Lou Harrison! Mind blown! It's so beautiful I could cry.
