just a typical old school detroit 2 stroke! Back in the 1980's and early/mid 1990's Winn Dixie used to have over 50 of them in GMC Brigadier trucks for delivering food from their warehouses to the stores. Those trucks were ordered so cheap that they had only one rear drive axle, no radio or A/C, and had a "drag axle" so it could still pack a full 80,000 total GCVW.

For the record--I was driving in this video. It now belongs to Tom Rice, and is a real peach! '85 Crown Turbo-Detroit 10 speed RT910. It is running a straight pipe, no muffler, which adds a bit to the exhaust note. It also necessitates a bit more care in shifting, as there is no back pressure on the exhaust side to bring engine RPMs down while shifting (I don't believe in using the Jacobs Engine Brake unnecessarily to accomplish this). The particular bus also has 24.5 TALL wheels and tires, which also changes the engine to road speed perception. After the right turn, I was upshifting on a 1.5 to 2 percent upgrade. Now you know!
@philepstein524
5 жыл бұрын
Are you going to add dual 6 inch stacks? Stax don't add much. Dual straight pipes the length of the bus will do. If yours is a 4 valve, the big job is done, having the split manifold. Straight pipes add to the stack effect. Instead of 6 in try two two and a half inch pipes. They create a loud rapping sound with 4 and 6 71 2 stroke GM's (or Detroit if you prefer). I remember in the 1950's the GMC trucks, even with mufflers would produce a loud rapping sound around 1900 rpm, especially with the pedal to the metal. I had a 1953 GMC 4 banger that could wake up the dead. One more thing - having the pancake engine hanging under the bus, the engine noise is amplified by the floor and frame to which it is attached. Enjoy your big crown. we drove one back from San Francisco to Minneapolis last year. Took a month to get our hearing back.
@DWSMITHA
5 жыл бұрын
Phil Epstein --the engine in this Crown is a Turbo 6-71 inline Detroit. The engines which really were loud were the 53 series engines, 3, 4 and 6/V6 configurations. Those were the basis that the tag “Screaming Jimmy” came from. This engine, in non-turbo form, was used in everything from ships to buses and trucks in the ‘40s. Greyhound used it exclusively in its Diesel buses up through the PD4104 and for a brief time in the PD4501 (with two of them in that bus). The PD 4501 series were repowered/converted from the 4-71 (times TWO) Detroits to the 8V71 Detroits, and GM Coach then powered the subsequent PD 4106/4107/4903 and 4905 series buses with the 8V71 series engine. There were some 12V71 engines in the MCI6 series Greyhound coaches, and even TWO MC7 series coaches that ran a very large gas turbine engine. So GENERAL MOTORS/Detroit Diesel Allison Division made a myriad of engines for many different applications in buses, trucks, ships and boats... you name it.

Just in case you need to know: jake brake + shifting only is for ujpshifting, same reason you'd double clutch (downshifting requires the opposite: pre-shift light foot-tap on accelator, then same douible-clutch). That applies is it HAS a jake.
@DWSMITHA
4 жыл бұрын
Terry Melvin -Yeah, this one sounds like a 53 series, but is actually a 6-71 turbo engine with a straight pipe-no muffler. I am revving it only to 2000 to shift and am not using the clutch. The Eaton-Fuller RT910 RoadRanger has only a 400 rpm split between gears, so operating range during shifting will be between 1600 and 2000 rpm-You have to keep her wound up tight and in the torque range. Without the muffler, this enhances the noise factor, and makes her sound like a 53 series rather than a 71 series engine. As with most Jimmys, the old adage applies-Drive it like you stole it!!😆😆

For some reason I imagined a fictional school bus model that sounds exactly like this but the reason for said fictional bus sounding that way is because the driver was shifting in the higher gears and part of it also had to do with the bus having a turbocharged engine out of a Nissan Skyline albeit connected to the driveshaft via low gearing (more like reverse overdrive as a way to increase torque) as opposed to being 2 stroke as in the Crown. Also both buses obviously have manual transmissions. I’m not saying the crown has an overdrive though, just sounds like it because it’s 2 stroke.
