He is so fun to watch. He makes you feel good. No one does that these days. A lot of "singers" today look angry or take themselves too seriously. They also depend too much on stage lights, smoke, fireworks etc. A good entertainer does not need those things. Louis didn't and that's obvious.

It's just impossible not to smile when you hear ol' satchel-mouth in action. The man just radiates warmth, charm, humour and clearly loves entertaining. Add to that a world-class bravura trumpet style and a voice that is instantly recognisable by practically every living soul on the planet and you have the genius born in a brothel in New Orleans and died loved and respected by musicians and audiences the world over. Thank God for Louis.

I might add that cocaine was legal in that period. Heck try blowing into a trumpet like that, you will be in a sea of sweat in front of your audience.

I am sorry your parents made you listen to jazz that you didn't like. The best part of the Mozart movie was the Emperor saying Amadeus played too many notes. Satchmo often played like a ballet master while other musicians like to play like a football game or a world record in the hundred meter dash
@medicineman1202

My comment wasn't intended to offend jazz musicians, I have a great respect for jazz musicians as jazz happens to be one of my favorite genres of music. I was just pointing out that I prefer simple melodic lines versus note density which I hear from a lot of musicians particular in Jazz. That's not to say they are not talented it's just not my preference. The great Bill Evans even explains on a video how he built his solos on very elementary lines to keep true to the music. Now let me reiterate that this simple style is just preference and doesn't mean any other styles is less or more as the different audience likes different sounds. And my parents didn't force me to listen to jazz music, I chose to explore all types of music on my own. In fact I've even taken history of mics classes in college and probably know more about music history than you do, but that is not my purpose for posting comments.

Growing up Jewish A very interesting story.... A Grandson of slaves, a boy was born in a poor neighborhood of New Orleans known as the "Back of Town." His father abandoned the family when the child was an infant, His mother became a prostitute and the boy and his sister had to live with their grandmother. Early in life he proved to be gifted for music and with three other kids he sang in the streets of New Orleans. His first gains were the coins that were thrown to them. A Jewish family, Karnofsky, who had immigrated from Lithuania to the USA had pity for the 7-year-old boy and brought him into their home. Initially given 'work' in the house, to feed this hungry child. There he remained and slept in this Jewish families home where, for the first time in his life he was treated with kindness and tenderness. When he went to bed, Mrs. Karnofsky sang him a Russian Lullaby that he would sing with her. Later, he learned to sing and play several Russian and Jewish songs. Over time, this boy became the adopted son of this family. The Karnofsky’s gave him money to buy his first musical instrument; as was the custom in the Jewish families. They sincerely admired his musical talent. Later, when he became a professional musician and composer, he used these Jewish melodies in compositions, such as St. James Infirmary and Go Down Moses. The little black boy grew up and wrote a book about this Jewish family who had adopted him in 1907. In memory of this family and until the end of his life, he wore a star of David and said that in this family he had learned "how to live real life and determination." You might recognize his name. This little boy was called Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong. Louis Armstrong proudly spoke fluent Yiddish!

Pure joy and music in human form! Even to this day the things he played on the trumpet are still top notch all these years later. Can’t get any better. I believe Wynton Marsalis said that he never could find one recording where Louis Armstrong ever played a sour note. Even though he didn’t have “formal” training he was a true musician and heard everything he played In his head. That is a true gift from god.
