Yeah but everyone thinks they're ugly. You're probably being hard on yourself. Literally most guys (and girls too) who think they're a 2 are actually more like a 7. Or could be if they worked out, got a hair cut, shaved their patchy beard, and took regular showers. So you're probably not as ugly as you think. Also do you mean face, or body ugly? Rossman's face is maybe a 6, but he's got great genetics and physique in terms of his body, and he's not overweight, and he looks like he works out so his body is like an 8. On top of this girls value a good job/income, general competence and social skills way more than looks anyways, so that works in the favor of ugly people. Finally, go after girls that are a 5 and not a 9, and you'll get WAY more attention. Or go after the ones with a 3 or 4 face and a 7 or 8 body, because those girls find far less attention from dudes than Mrs. Perfect Face that they can brag to their friends to with a picture on their phone.

I'm no psychologist, at least, not professionally, but having obsessively studied psychology and neurology to make up for the shortage of competent doctors in my area, I do know what's going on. It's not you they're lying to. They're lying to themselves. Parents do want their children to find an intelligent mate. But they're about as bad of a judge of character as their children are. Financially, repair shops do want those extra benefits, but ultimately, management is a bad judge of added value, and humans are horribly addicted to gambling. They tell themselves, "This is what I want, what I will pay for, because it's good", and then what they do to themselves is the opposite. It's like any other bad decision. Junk food makes you feel good for all of two seconds before you feel like absolute shit. All you can eat rice at your local asian buffet sounds great but like, half an hour after you leave you're hungry again. Opiods relieve pain but then you become less sensitive to them and more dependent the more you use them to relieve pain. And finally, cheap hits of dopamine reduce your dopamine production and/or your dopamine sensitivity, and make you make worse decisions and take bigger risks, to get more of it. Could be a sad excuse for an adrenaline hit, too. Hell, my caffeine addiction is probably adrenal. Give me a thrill and I save the monster for another fix. Used to do some low risk parkour to feel good, but by the time I could get into the higher risk stuff, I was no longer fit for it, and next thing I knew, I was intaking more caffeine than ever.

That's very true The parallel thing is that people don't know what they need and will make stuff up. I was involved in several system revamp or implementation projects, and have worked with people in various positions, from production floor workers to office workers to management. They don't know what is possible, they will try to explain their imagined ways on how to fix their daily issues. Those ideas, for the most part, are ignorant and useless. Not their fault of course, they're not experts, but it's the fact I was telling that to people collecting requirements when managing projects - people will come up with all sorts of crazy shit they wish they had, but when the functionality is provided, nearly nobody uses it. Only when you look at people actually working and having issues, swearing and complaining - that's when you can learn something useful and provide them with something that would actually benefit them, because you now know both the problem and the extent of what's achievable. The funny part is that people sometimes can't explain or even notice the thing that is crippling their work, because they got so used to doing it the convoluted and inconvenient way, that they don't notice how absurd it is.

I was even considered an "anti-bully" in my younger days and stuck my neck out for many people. A big one for me was always feeling bad for people's financial situations. I would take people at their word and listen to their troubles and even lend a few when I could. Then I would OFTEN see those same people buying big things or going on vacations. I have had to try and curtail that part of me.

I have had the same problem in my life and if has been a really painful and confusing process to try and make myself somehow less empathetic or less caring. After a while I finally decided I didn’t want to become what I consider to be a shittier person. I didn’t want to be less caring, I didn’t want to be less kind just because shitty people treated me badly and lots of people are greedy and manipulative and prey on the kindness of others. So I’ve been working hard to find middle ground by taking more time/being more cautious with my choices to invest in people, emotionally or otherwise, and I do what I can to become more aware of the kinds of red flags that my childhood basically made me desensitized to. The truly manipulative sociopathic types of people exist but they are far less common than the average selfish, entitled, greedy asshole. Both will try to exploit you, but the latter is much easier to recognize even from a distance if you know what to look for. I also had to get better at saying no and/or just avoiding those kinds of people altogether by creating strong boundaries for myself. Being kind to myself while I figured out how to do all this has also been extremely important. Basically I just wanted to say that you can keep your admirable qualities AND protect yourself from being exploited, it doesn’t have to be one or the other. This world desperately needs more kind and compassionate people, not less. We just need to be more aware and discerning to protect ourselves.

@@cassiedavis2218 I feel you 100%! Empathy is extremely important and so is the ability to control it. Sociopaths and assholes can and will use your empathy against you. Sociopaths are the worst cuz they'll stick to the script, insisting that they're being honest no matter what the repercussions are to others. Given the chance, they'll do it again and again. This was a lesson I learned from my oldest brother though it took me 30y or so to get it. For a while I just accepted apologies and moved on. As we got older and his bullshit started affecting my life, I started distracting myself from him, going for extended periods of time with no contact. The last 2 times were like 2y and 5y. Each time it seemed like he finally got it only to be back to the same shit within a day or 2. It's been like 10y now and I'm fine not seeing him again. I don't hate him. I just realized that he doesn't think or feel the way we generally agree are normal and healthy. Their moral compass doesn't exist. They learn what's normal and learn to fake it but behind those eyes is an alien that does not care. The only way to deal with them is to not deal with them. Sociopathy is common in my maternal side of the family so it's been a wild, traumatic ride. I'm still not immune to sociopaths but I'm far more wary and try hard to keep my idealism from blinding me to red flags I'm actually very aware of. I'm also less tolerant of bullshit and if you act sketchy in a manipulative, gaslighting or cold blooded liar way I'm gone ASAP. I have no more fucks to give such people. There are enough decent ones that deserve my time and help. I refuse to stop caring. It's my favorite part of me and almost overcomes my self-loathing.

This applies to all areas of life - men, women, business, and dating. But in this specific vertical: it is nice to have something on paper I can point to, so I feel less crazy. Hearing people say _"I don't want much, just for the guy to have some ambition"_ ..... then observing reality... it paints a *very* different picture. I'm sure every guy who has ever heard a female coworker or family member say this, who observed their _actual_ dating choices, has had the same thought at some point in time. A solution would be putting cats on circuit boards, while they're being repaired. But it messes everything up, potentially. Maybe it would work if the cat were in a non-conductive bag, only the head poking out or so? But what if there's still some hairs that fall out and get soldered to the board? The customers could complain, although I think it wouldn't matter in most cases, as far as functionality goes. It would look weird though, electronic components with cat hair hanging out, in some people's eyes that's unprofessional. So maybe put a hair net on the cat, also? And then what if she jumps out of the bag?... It would be a cascade of problems, but perhaps all the more entertaining, who knows?

Chris Williamson just had an interesting guy on about dating. One of the things he said, was that there's actually quite significant nuance in who we find attractive. Like some people are more likely to be rated as attractive than others, of course. But MOST or "all" people will still have a significant portion of the respondents say they would date them. You don't have to please the average or everyone else. One of the things he suggested was that people go more into what they're into. Or like, embrace what you are, or part of yourself, or whatever. Because whatever you embrace, somebody will probably be into it. Which is better than being bland and not very interesting to anyone. I think the most important take away is that somebody will find you attractive, even though most people might not. Besides that, people should work on becoming more attractive partners. And as for you, Louis, you have a lot of followers... I'm sure there are hot single women following you. So you have no excuse other than prudence 🤣! Instead of 'go fund me', do a 'go date me'!

I gotta say: This is exactly what I keep telling my friends about guys who say they want "a traditional woman" who "will stay at home, take care of the house and the kids" while the man works. In reality, most of these men still want women who will work, who will have other interests and hobbies, and that will want to share housework. And these guys then never date the very type of women they say they want (or those "pick me girls"), and instead will prefer to date highly independent women and try to force them into a more traditional wife-role, while still expecting the women to work, remain interesting (aka having hobbies outside of their relationship) and generally be pissed when women do expect them to pay for the full bill on a date.

No money or status, culture or education will ever be able to change that and even worse: We are far away from our society admitting this scientific indicator, that has been prooved by billions of couples. Oof, this resonates with me as an artist. I tried doing original content with interactive comics because, in school and in private discussions, people would tell me the idea was super cool and should be super successful. I found, early on, that most people were too lazy to click the buttons, and I did better when I picked either animation or comics, and animations did better than comics because people were too lazy to read. I eventually pivoted to "alternative content" (the "oldest profession" kind that would get you demonetized on KZitem) and found that people were a lot more willing to spend money there (which taught me two truths: 1. "the oldest profession" sells, and 2. people were not into me because of who I was as an artist, since I had two accounts to gauge similarities and differences). And my social media stats did better when I did fan art of established intellectual property, rather than of my own original characters (i.e. Why doesn't Hollywood take risks on original content vs prequels, sequels and reboots? Because those are what make money). And again, animations did better than illustrations or comics (or even 3D sculpts, which I've started getting into) because all people had to do is watch the animation. I've found that people who say "follow your passion" suffer from a severe case of survivorship bias, where they lucked into having passions that align with the mainstream. For everyone else? Don't trust what people say with their mouths, Trust how they spend with their wallets.

@@rossmanngroup I'm not talking about me buying from your store of course (which would have good reputation through your videos). And surely you're right about customers being cheap also, I did not want to minimise this likely explanation. But while trying to understand out loud my own behaviour, I had in mind more of a generic version of a web store were I am interested in the product to the point of buying it, while simultaneously dreading the usual cases of failures: "credit card has been billed but the store says there is and the store lost the transaction", or the product is said to be in stock but for some reason it does not ship after 2 weeks, or the insurance addons for benefits that are unclear and for which you can't really claim anything if you actually try, etc... It's just fatigue at this point, and "good guys" like you might also be the victim of a sense of generalised lack of trust from markets on the internet (even if the great feedback you have should help overcome that). I don't know, it's just a point of personal anecdote from a european guy nothing more. And of course it's me talking, and not my actual behavior. In any case keep up the good work, what you're doing for right to repair is much needed.

oh shit, what's talked about in the study might be caused by the halo effect, so if someone is "ugly" then they are far less likely to be viewed as "intelligent" or may even be perceived as stupid (this is called the horn effect where a perceived faults might cause the individual to assume they have other faults as well) but if someone is "attractive" then an observer is far more likely to view the subject as "intelligent" even if they aren't, which is the halo effect. (which is the opposite of the horn effect) cognitive biases are wild because we say one thing but are biases make us show our asses every single time.

I used to be extremely ugly so I know that no matter how smart or kind you may be, if you're ugly, you will always be held back by the rest of the society. They will not give you a chance, they won't want you around in workplaces or schools, you will never be good enough. Ugly people are treated like animals. So it is no surpise to me that women pick handsome men. It's an intuitive choice that makes sense.

You can be the most polite and well intentioned guy, but if you are average looking, it's going to be ten times harder. In fact, if you ask out a woman and you are an average guy, even if you were polite, respectful and had the best intentions, not only you get rejected, the social group (like mutual friends, classmates, coworkers or whatever) kinda get angry at you, you get rejected by the whole social group like you did something very wrong. You invited her for a coffee and you are the bad guy. But when one of the good looking guys asks her out, even if he's rude or has some big flaw like being a known cheater or alcoholic or whatever, everybody is happy.

In Data Analysis this is called explicit vs implicit behavior. If you survey people their words (explicit) will tell you one thing while their actions (implicit) will tell you another. Implicit data tends to be more valuable than explicit.

I've just gone through this twice in the last month in my gaming group, where someone wasn't matching up with what they said. The first was a narcissist that love bombed me and then started distancing as he worked on two other girls. Ouch. Then one of the other girls he was working on turned out to be a guy, who was also working on me.. by separating me from the narcissist. The first one got thrown out, the second was given a chance and told you broke the trust in the group and you'll have to work on that. After a week the dude had no concept of why we didn't magically trust him again. Every conversation, "I did nothing wrong." He was removed last night. When people show you who they are, believe them.

An online gaming group, probably? People do sh!t online that would obviously never fly in real life. But, just to play devil's advocate for a bit, I think it's perhaps fair to recognize that online games/groups simply don't look like the real world, either. So it's easy to imagine that that would be an extra reason for people behaving unnaturally/wrong, if the whole f'ing game/interface/group is unnatural/wrong. Doesn't make an a-hole right, but just saying, it's not like they're always having a clear view of where they are and what they do and how it impacts other people, either. When playing in a dream-world, there's a chance you'll be bit by dreams.

It's kinda funny watching young people come to the realization that the person who lies to them the most is... Themselves. For years I've told people that everyone needs someone who will tell them the truth even if they don't want to hear it. A therapist is probably not that person. I don't really think you can pay someone to be your best friend who knows every dirty secret you have and still wants to be your friend. These days, though... It seems like no one understands the value of having real friends who will call you on your BS. Yes. We all lie to ourselves. But, just like the lies we tell other people some of those lies are pretty harmless. The ones you know you are telling yourself are the least dangerous. It's the ones you can't see for yourself that are the bad ones. Someone else has to tell you about those.

A good therapist won't tell you anything good or bad; they are supposed to work with you for YOU to have your own epiphanies. They are like a guide, like a better conscience that makes you think critically, and if they are really good, they get to know you to get to those realizations better. I think pop-media has reduced therapists into a stereotype of a replacement parent; and while there are plenty of terrible therapists out there, it's a disservice to the ones that actually help people along to say they can't tell you the truth--they're not supposed to, they're supposed to create a mental space outside of yourself for you to sort things out. With enough practice, people can actually do this on their own; and sometimes it comes through devotion to a hobby or a cause--the same way you hear some athletes says "I learned everything about Life through Basketball/chess/Math" But the odds of most people have that devotion, and having the ability to understand/see their own blindspots is very hard. Even the best of the best athletes still seek out trainers and coaches--that's all a good therapist is really, they'll get you to go through motions and exercises until something "clicks" inside of you and you grow as a person.

@@jamjox9922, you're completely right but you couldn't be more wrong. Yes... A, "good," therapist will lead you through a journey of self-discovery that you could never attain without assistance. The problem is how does an average person find a, "good," therapist? Most of them are trained to prescribe one drug or another because that is the only thing the universities teach because they are almost entirely funded by the pharmaceutical corporations. It begins with training. It begins with the bottom line. I could/would say more but... Most people are still too confused to think about, "the money." As I said to one of my sons a bit ago, "It isn't really about having all of the money yourself. It is more about preventing other people from having money." Take some time to think about that. Study some history. You will be horrified by what is happening now.

This ties in with something my best friend and I talked about, and it's shitty it happens in the first place. My best friend and his brother have older parents who were born in the 50s and didn't have their kids until their 30s. Because of this, their parents grew up in the 60s and 70s when American culture really valued hard work, honesty and good manners. Naturally, they instilled these traits into their kids, and my two friends are what I would consider to be honorable men. However, no doubt as you're well aware being an 80s baby yourself, our generation didn't necessarily espouse the same value system that our parents did, or at least not to the same degree. Our generation, for better or worse, is more selfish and short-term thinking (not *everyone*, just in general). In some ways you could say we're more honest with our emotions, but this also means we're a bit more shallow and advantage-taking. My best friend was very social growing up, so he naturally evolved with our age group and found a happy medium to fit in while implementing his parents' values in a way that was pleasing and palatable. His brother, also a good standup guy, was much less social, and preferred to keep to himself and do things on his own. Nothing wrong with that whatsoever, I'm an introvert myself, but when we hit adulthood and all started working, we noticed something amongst the three of us. My friend's brother, who also instilled his parents' values but in a much more literal way on account of being more introverted and less social, was always getting taken advantage of by his bosses and coworkers. He even had one boss lay him off for "being a pussy", and that REALLY pissed us off, because my friend's brother is a hard worker who's always on time and never calls in sick. (Not to mention he was married and a father of two when this happened). All rage aside, my friends' Dad was literally scratching his head and saying, "Why did they fire him? He always showed up to work, he was always on time, always did his best. What kinda idiot fires *THAT* employee?" But it goes to what you mentioned in this video, and it was something my best friend and I discussed later between the two of us. Everybody, including employers, always say what they want, or *think* they want, because it sounds logical in their own internal dialogue. But what they *really* want is made manifest in their actions. Our generation doesn't care about the guy who's always on time per se, they want someone that they enjoy joking around and hanging out with after work. Because my good friend, the brother, was more the quiet type, his boss didn't like him, so he found a reason to get rid of him, then told my friend when he fired him over the phone that "[he's] kind of a pussy". (Says the guy who calls the employee after he's gone home because he doesn't want to tell him face-to-face). And my best friend and I talked about what you mentioned in this video. Everybody *says* what they want out loud, but what they *really* want often has to be figured out -- most people aren't literal. They may say, "Oh, we want someone who's hard working, who's always on time, who always does their best," but maybe what they really want is, "We want a guy who makes us laugh, who's fun to chat with at the workplace, who socializes and makes work fun, and maybe even joins us after hours." Which, like you mentioned, is a key thing to protecting yourself and getting ahead in this world. Knowing what's going on versus what's being said. My friend works a good job now. He has to get up super early, but thankfully, his references from previous jobs helped him land a new one pretty quick after that asshole boss. Like it or not, we have to cultivate that skill if we wish to get ahead with our fellow humans. Otherwise we'll find ourselves getting blindsided over and over again.

For example, by not having the nerve to check up on everything we buy... ...and hence, by probably supporting some shyte we don't even notice. But on the other hand, I suppose that's a different category from actually checking up on a couple of buying options, and then opting for the one we said we'd never buy, despite fully recognizing it for what it is. At least at first glance, it's two slightly different topics. The quick buy isn't necessarily a lie, it's just expedient.
