German violinist, composer, and conductor Louis Spohr was highly regarded during his lifetime. He wrote 11 operas, 10 symphonies, and a large number of violin concerti and chamber music. His Six Songs for soprano, clarinet, and piano, Op. 103, are regarded as the ‘gold standard’ of this combination of performers. But his music fell into obscurity following his death and rarely performed again until the late 1900s.
