decade240 I agree. That's always been the appeal of Louis to me. He's like totally dull and neutral (well he comes across that way, but really is obviously a very well educated and traveled person with opinions on many things)...yet he presents this kind of nerdy naive person, very open minded...and although he's a serious intellectual chap, he doesn't take himself too seriously and is able to stick his neck out and take a risk of looking silly. it's enabled him to go to places, and speak to people, that have been marginalised out of society or seen as too taboo or dangerous.. He can go speak to neo-Nazi's or raise questions about the US prison gang violence.. in a way no other interviewer could do..he really gets into peoples minds, lives their life, gains their friendship and trust of people from all walks of life, political and social backgrounds. It takes a special person to be able to do that.

Such respect for Louis, it is so important someone in his position remains impartial, objective, honest and doesn't outright dismiss the subject (The Church of Scientology in this case) or carry a bias into his work. This cannot be easy when face with an institution that outwardly seems explicitly exploitative, opportunistic, damaging and downright mad. He gives them no material to fudge to their benefit , no premise to build and exaggerate an argument on, leaves no holes in his argument for people within such an organisation to throw back at him and distract people from the actual issues his work helps to expose and he doesn't mirror mindless aggression.

Louis theroux inspired me to visit the church of scientology in my street in Amsterdam. I went there, they sat me down and let me watch a video about L. Ron Hubbard (took a DVD home) it was very American, patriotic, about his personal achievements, I didn't really found it interesting. I asked if I could see a video about the church's ideology and how it works, they did, I didn't really follow, asked a few questions about it but didn't get any answers. What happened while I was watching seemed a bit uninteresting at first, there was a man who clearly worked there and a woman who just appeared, talking very loudly just around the corner how scientology has helped her greatly and how it was so similar to Islam. I found that a bit odd (I guess they thought I was a muslim). They sat me down to make a personality test (250 statements you answer 1 to 5 how much it applies to me), that took me more than a hour, I did my best to answer in a way they couldn't use against me, mostly impartial answers. When I was making the test, there was the same woman again. Trying to strike a conversation with me about Islam and how she saw all the benefits of scientology. I didn't really respond and she made her leave. I was put in a room with a guy that brought me in to talk about my test scores. He called me depressed and wanted to find any excuse to go deeper on my lacking social life, I denied everything and was the weirdest conversation I had, (mind you I was 20 years old and my life was still all about parties) I was ever sceptical and brushed off everything I could, I remember him saying that I needed help and was depressed because I didn't have a partner or wasn't married yet, I answered with the biggest smile I wasn't depressed didn't care about marriage. I got into the most heated discussion with him about my life, first he kept referring to my scores, than it was he actually said, fuck the score's they don't mean anything. It was a constant contradiction. I decided after being there for about 3 hours I wanted to leave, I tried confronting him with the woman how that was weird. That didn't go so well and took my jacket and left taking a DVD of L. Ron Hubbard with me as a momento, skill scared to watch it. I use it as decoration now to remind me of my experience. I went in there full well I wasn't going to accept anything, it was maybe the most weird adventure I had. That's what they do, play act around you to make you open yourself up, that they can use.

Louis is pretty much the only vérité style documentarian I enjoy. Even Herzog, who is clearly an extremely talented film maker, takes me out of the film with his presence. But Louis has an uncanny ability to be at the centre with his subject/s and not pull focus from them. Working undercover for a story, whether it's an investigative piece for a newspaper or a documentary, splits the focus to an extent, just by dint of the fact that part of the audience's attention is on the possibility of an undercover person being exposed and the consequences that may ensue.

I think Louis was being a little generous in his description of the sea org. The sea org is a quasi-military/navy, based purely on LRH 1) forced into tax and political exile and needing to keep his org together and keep control over everyone 2) to re-live his fantasy that he was an excellent WWII naval officer (he was anything but in reality according to his service record, but he liked to perpetuated the myth he was) and create some kind of elitist military-regimented vanguard arm to his org (similar to the Nazi's SS), the uniforms bear an striking similarity to the US Navy. He even had lofty ambitions of using the sea org to establish a new scientology country in South Africa. The guy was totally crazy insane.

peekachoo !!! Me too. He’s so measured but somehow gets to the truth. Saville was the only one who pulled the wool over his eyes.

This is a good discussion about an interesting Louis T documentary. The Scientologist Catherine comes across as really rather unpleasant; toxic even. In the full documentary it is even more evident. There is something of the strident Trumper in vocal Scientologists... Just keep blaring your own truth until everyone else gets bored or shuts up.... Not much of a flicker of curiosity or intellectual engagement. How I wish the youth today we're taught how to think to some purpose.

Louis work on Scientology was his end. It was an absolutely shambolic documentary. He will never recover.

I like Louis but I'm skeptical that they got any interesting content for the movie. The clip they've shown me think the entire movie is about him trying and failing to get a decent interview. And I'm not psyched to watch 1.5 hours of him arguing about road access and making fun of scientology camera men.
