When I read in MARVEL AGE that Todd was going to draw Spidey I screamed to myself: "YaHOO!" I was already a fan from INFINITY, Inc. and his HULK comics but I knew his work had whimsical leanings that were sorely missed in Spidey's adventures!

The vibe I get from McFarlane's style I didn't get anywhere else until I saw Dale Keown's Hulk, and Kelly Jones' Batman. A rare thing indeed. Modern comics are totally bankrupt of character and style.

Todd McFarlane was the game changer for the whole spiderman world. After him there was no return to classic Romita/Ditko style.
@pulsarstargrave256

Actually, that's not quite correct, Todd's style was like Ditko on steroids! Look at reprints of AMZSM 1-6, that's what Todd remembered and was inspired by! As for the "spaghetti" webbing Todd has admitted he first saw it depicted that way in a MICHAEL GOLDEN portfolio!

McFarlane on the spaghetti webbing: "Years ago, you guys used to put out these black-and-white portfolios, around 1980 or something like that. [1982] And there was one piece that was the Defenders by Michael Golden, and for whatever reason, he had Spider-Man in it. He did this great Spider-Man with this funky webbing, and I kept that piece, out of all the pieces. And I go, 'If I ever turn into a comics pro, and if I ever work for Marvel Comics, and if I ever get to do Spider-Man, I'm gonna do webbing like that.'"

#299 was my first McFarlane Spider-Man and I was hooked after that. What a time to be a comic fan! I loved how he drew MJ as well. I always thought he might have based her on the supermodels of the time with the main one being Cindy Crawford. I know she doesn't have red hair but she was probably the most famous supermodel of the era. This month Marvel reprinted the Arthur Adams run on Fantastic Four and I can see how much of an influence he had on all those Image guys - McFarlane, Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld and then J Scott Campbell and Joe Madureira.

I've come to appreciate Bagley's art a lot more over the years. Back in the day I wasn't too fond of his drawings in Ultimate Spider-Man, because he copied a lot of panels. Especially in the dialogue scenes and they went on for a couple of pages. But recently I took a fresh look at Bagley's penciling on Amazing in the 1990s and his work on Spider-Man: Life Story and his style really grew on me.

Thanks for watching, Ryan. The right inker on a book can levitate the art, the wrong inker can destroy it. But most of the times the artist and inker gel pretty good. Which did you prefer in the video: the McFarlane art inked by McLeod or by McFarlane himself?

Great video. Touched on a lot of great opinions and information. I started reading Spider-Man in the mid-70's and it began my love for the character and most Marvel characters and comics. I was about 9 as well. Taking the trip down memory lane for the last two years with Marvel Unlimited has been fantastic to say the least. I never read many of MacFarlanes Spider-Man because I had seen the lure of different publishers, got out of the superhero genre, adulthood, wanting comics to portray something else, etc. I am going to go back and check these issues out. Your explanation of Saviuks backgrounds vs MacFarlanes is great. There is a lot to love about MacFarlanes style. I think you are correct on Kelly LeBrock being his real life Mary Jane. Todd MacFarlane really did help create a more detailed approach to Amazing Spider-Man and it defined him as a natural, more mature talent for the book. Good mention of Michael Golden, too. He's my favorite artist, but thats a different matter. Thanks for this video!

Almost done reading the Spiderman by McFarlane omnibus. The art is certainly good....but its kinda just what I expected. @AmsterdamComicGeek

The art certainly is a feast for the eyes. For me it's hard to figure how new and younger readers respond to Spider-Man material that's over 30 years old or even older. Storytelling changed over time. A friend of mine doesn't like the X-Men stories by Claremont and Byrne because he thinks Byrne's art style is old fashioned for instance.
