Great pick. I grew up just a few blocks from where John lived and later died. And it was quite common to see both he and Yoko walking around just like everyone else. I must have seen him at least 20 times or more during the last five years of his life but like most New Yorkers I never wanted to bother him. But one day in 1979 a little boy came running towards me and almost fell down so I quickly bent over to stop his momentum and he ended up in my arms. As I looked up John was standing in front of me and he thanked me profusely. The boy was his son Sean. I was a bit stunned but I held it together and I said “ no problem he’s adorable.” He smiled and thanked me again. I wanted to say so many things to him but I didn’t. I wish I had at least thanked him for the gift of his music. After all The Beatles were the sound track of my life. 🕊❤️🎼

Once again, another song that takes me back to my junior year of high school. 1980-81 was my favorite year of an insanely fun 3 years of high school. We were all shocked and deeply saddened by the death of John Lennon. He was still making great music all the way to the end of his life. He was certainly one of the biggest figures of the 20th Century beyond a doubt. This was released in 1981, after his tragic passing.

I, too was 16 when John was murdered. The songs on the Double Fantasy album were those of a far more mature John who had finally learned how to be a father. He was a lousy father to his first son, Julian for whom Paul wrote and sang Hey Jude as John had no clue how to be a dad and was divorcing his first wife and mother of Julian, a small child. John used to marvel at Paul's ability to show up and within minutes joining little Julian in silly games out of thin air. John even asked Paul how he does it. Ten years later and after taking a break from music John finally figured it out and, put all the feeling into the songs about life, his second son, his wife into his very best songs of his solo career. But he died without a will which was unforgivably irresponsible so Yoko got everything. She refused for years to give Julian a dime. Eventually Yoko began helping Julian out. The tragedy of John's death was greatly compounded by his incredibly irresponsible never writing a will to provide for his first son. I will always love John but it was Paul who was the ever practical, lover of family including Julian who did it all the responsible and correct way,

Then only to hear a couple of days later that he had been murdered...a really devastating time for a Beatles fan, and felt so sad for yoko and the kids, can you imagine what Yoko suffered. I have never felt negative about Yoko, why some people are is beyond me, john chose her and is nobody elses business. Yoko has continued to support Johns memory all her life. Xxx

A fitting song for Lennon's big comeback album "Double Fantasy" after so many years out of the spotlight, a stark contrast to McCartney who never left it. "You never know how much time you will have." How prophetic in Johns case. Im so glad he used the birth of his second child to take time out. Double fantasy was a damn good return to the music industry, too. By the way, Lennon had a very long and successful solo music career after the Beatles, and his stepping away from the scene here was just about stepping away from his own career. People said he was crazy because you can't usually take time out and expect to stay relevant. I guess they forgot who they were talking to.

My favorite post-Beatles Lennon song. Can you imagine how many times he had to hear the question "are the Beatles getting back together?" People mostly would ask it out of love, but for him it had to be weird that most folks just couldn't understand that they had moved on to "real life". And sadly, he was murdered not long after writing this song...by a madman who was a "fan".

@BlackHatCinephile

@@patticrichton1135 I thought it would be obvious. I didn't want to spell it out, because that would be patronizing, and I'd rather presume the better than the worse. Beatles break up in 1970. Right away, Paul and John are having a friendly war in their albums. Maybe from not knowing how, or unwilling, to let go. Wings happen, Lost Weekend happens, Yoko gets pregnant and John becomes a househusband. But every now and then he slips away to contribute to some Bowie or Jagger project. He's not as over it as he lets on. The album war between Lennon and McCartney cools off, and they become friends again, here and there contributing to some Harrison or Starr project. 1980, Lennon gets "Coming Up" stuck in his head, so he's back in the studio, doing his own project instead of just hanging out on his friends' sessions. Double Fantasy's a hit, and there's gossip about a reunion. John and Paul happened to be sitting on John's couch when Lorne Michaels was on TV offering them cash to reunite on his show. They considered it, but lazied out of it. 1990, they could say it was 20 years ago today that the Beatles went separate ways, but not so separate, really. The timing rhyming with that song they made about themselves sounds like Fate. Who can resist Fate? Especially not the Beatles. 1990 would have been the year. Not "could" or "maybe", 1990 was meant to be the year. And it would have been.

Believe it or not, we have the B-52's and your favorite song "Rock Lobster" to thank for this song and album. In the mid-to-late '70s, John Lennon wasn’t playing music. He wasn’t thinking much about music. He was trying to be a good father to son Sean. He’d lost interest in trying to persuade people to listen to the work he’d done with wife Yoko Ono, and his last release had been in 1974. Around five years later, he exploded back into action in a matter of moments. “I was at a dance club one night in Bermuda,” Lennon told Rolling Stone in an interview recorded three days before his death in 1980. “Upstairs, they were playing disco, and downstairs I suddenly heard ‘Rock Lobster’ by the B-52’s for the first time. Do you know it? It sounds just like Yoko’s music.” In particular, Cindy Wilson’s scream toward the end of the song was reminiscent of Ono’s approach. “I said to meself, ‘It’s time to get out the old ax and wake the wife up!’” Lennon said. Almost immediately he and Ono started working. He’d write a song and sing it to her on the phone; in New York, she’d come up with a song of her own as a reply. The result was "Double Fantasy", the last full album Lennon ever worked on before his death in December 1980. This song was the stand-out song from that album.

No, you missed John's point about letting it go. . .He's referring to his CAREER. He kind of stopped "playin the game" of show business for a while. Other performers were asking him what he was doing, and "don't you miss the big time?" And he just said that he had to let that part of his life go for a while, and he was happy just watching the wheels go round and round. . .Meaning watching others chase the money and fame while he just enjoyed his life AWAY from all of that. Love this song because it's John's answer to those who thought he was wasting his time. Classic Lennon!!!

Actually what John meant in this song: he had quit making music. He was staying at home, letting Yoko do all the business, and John was a house husband. Taking care of Sean, watching him all day, learning how to cook, just being a homebody. And this was unfathomable to his friends and associates in the music business. One of the very greatest legendary performers of all time ... just quit the biz. Staying home watching the wheels go round and round. "I just had to let it go." But he finally got the bug again and started making music. And good music too. Beautiful Boy, Starting Over, Woman, etc. Then was taken away from us, much too soon. It still hurts.

John's Plastic Ono Band album is a minimalistic, confessional, primal-scream-therapy-inspired masterpiece if you want the really personal stuff. "God" is a great tune. Oh My Love. The whole album (almost). Actually George plays on that album quite a bit (and Ringo a little). "How Do You Sleep" is a vicious attack on Paul, in response to Paul's great tune "Too Many People" which John interpreted as a shot by Paul at him. Too Many People is on McCartney's Ram album, that includes on the cover a picture of two beetles (insects) copulating. In other words, a Beatle f*****g a Beatle. The boys were feuding at the time. And check out McCartney's Uncle Albert Admiral Halsey. An underrated gem.

I have always loved this song. To me it is really about being grateful for the gifts in your life (GOD, family, work for me) and realizing that if your priorities are clear for you then it really doesn't matter what others think. Be a peace with yourself and your GOD, the rest will take care of itself. When I worked in engineering there was a feeling from many workers that if the engineer wasn't standing at the work station helping they were somewhere else doing nothing. I think he is saying that the world often holds the same perception of musicians. If you aren't in the studio or on tour you are doing nothing and wasting time. Life goes by way too fast to not enjoy the little joys in life, sometimes you see those by sitting still and watching the wheels of the world roll. Agree with the comment below "There are no problems, only solutions" what a challenging, engaging and joyful attitude.

Rob: "You never know how much time you have . . . " Great reactions, Rob Squad! I was living in NYC at the time the album, "Double Fantasy" came out with "Watching the Wheels" on it. At the time all of the Beatles fans (myself included) were going nuts to hear fresh John Lennon after taking off 5 years to raise Sean while Yoko took care of the business aspects of the family. It was wonderful hearing John's expression of contentment and satisfaction and we were all shocked by his murder just a few weeks after this message came out. What if he had never gotten back on the merry-go-round and started making music again for the fans, would he still be with us today? . . . If you really want to dive deep into the Lennon rabbit hole, you really should react to the very last music John ever recorded, as it happens, with Yoko, "Walking on Thin Ice." While it is a Yoko single, John was intimately involved in the production of the song and plays backwards electric guitar on it. (Featuring Yoko's distinctive vocals, a really phat base line and funky rhythm section, it was a dance club hit in it's day.) Tragically, John was returning home from that final session when he was assassinated at the entrance to the Dakota, just a few blocks from where I lived. I joined the massive crowd in central park for the historic moment of silence to commemorate his life that following weekend. One final recollection: in NYC, during the late 1970's you could wander into restaurants and shops all over Manhattan and see Polaroid snapshots that the proprietors had taken of John and Yoko when they visited their establishments. At the time I had always hoped that I would be lucky enough to spy the couple while walking through the city, but never did.

For his son, Sean’s, first five years (1975-1980) John was a stay at home dad. He wrote this song about that situation. He was on the verge of his comeback in 1980 when he was assassinated.

Great choice. Great song. When you choose your next Lennon song, may I suggest either the flowing and beautiful "#9 Dream" or the wonderful fast paced rocker "Whatever Gets You Through the Night." Two very satifying tunes that'll end up on your personal playlist 😊 Blessings ❤

@jrox6091 "Whatever Gets You Through the Night" was Elton John's song, that John sang along with him. John told Elton that if it went to number one, then he would get on stage with Elton and perform it with him. He said that because he didn't think it would be a number one hit. When it WAS, Elton reminded John of that promise. Which he honored, but he was so nervous before getting on stage that he threw up.

@@patticrichton1135 well, Lennon actually wrote and sang the song and Elton liked it, predicting it'd be a chart topper...so the bet was on. After it hit #1 Lennon paid up and appeared onstage at Elton's Thanksgiving 1974 concert.

This video reminds me of my late brother, who had a resemblance to John, and his young son, Daniel, who was born around the time as Sean. It's uncanny, and this always makes me tear up. Miss my brother and John so much. ❤

He turned into a father for his son. He only had 5 years with the son when he finished his album. He went home and was killed in front of his door and his wife was there

I love this song and the video. The part of the video that always brings me to tears is when John and Sean blow out the candles on the cake. They share the same birthday and it just tears me up inside knowing they'd only share a handful of birthdays together before John was taken from Sean, Yoko, Julian, and the rest of the world. I was supposed to go to the UK in January 2020 and Liverpool was one of the places at the top of my list to visit. Unfortunately the day I was scheduled to fly to Amsterdam and then to the UK was the same day the EU closed their borders due to C*vid. It was my one and only chance to see where it all started for the Fab Four and, 4 years later, I'm still gutted over missing out on it. 😢

People make mistakes & John Lennon was only human 😢 As long as Julian found forgiveness and peace with or for his father, that's what matters the most ❤

I have always interpreted "watching the wheels go round and round" as John sitting in the warmth of the love of his family watching the craziness of the world as more of an observer.

I love the theme of this beautiful song! Sometimes you just have to slow down and take your time to appreciate the special moments while they're happening. Life goes by so fast, we don't always have to be in a hamster wheel trying to keep up. To paraphrase a great Buddhist quote (or joke) - don't just do something, sit there. It's not the fast pace of life that bothers me, it's the sudden stop at the end.

John was a wonderful father to his son Sean. Unfortunately he completely ignored Julian.

The Beatles were huge when Julian was born. They had to tour & record. So the timing was off. Towards the end, John reached out to Julian & they just started to get close when John was tgen shot. Ironic as John grew up with his Aunt Mimi & started to get close to her as a teen when she was killed by an off-duty police officer.
