I recently saw an interview that Paul McCartney did in the Howard Stern Show about this very song. Howard said, "I heard John didn't like this song." Paul responded, "Who says? A Jamaican man (I forget his name) was a friend of ours. I saw him one day and asked how he was doing. He replied, 'Ob-la-di, Ob-la da, life goes on you know!' So, George, Ringo and I were in the studio working on this song when John walked in. He asked what we were working on and I told him. John sat down at the piano and started playing what you hear. We had our song finally!" By the way, I absolutely love this song.

In his book, Paul McCartney, The Lyrics, he says very little about why he wrote Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Di, but he explained that he liked to "go down a club" after a Beatles concert and get food and drink. Inside the club he met a Nigerian conga player called Jimmy Scott. Paul asked Jimmy how he was, and Jimmy replied, "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, life goes on, Bra." Jimmy explained that it was a phrase similar to the French saying “comme ci, comme ça.” used, especially in answer to the question, “How's it going?” to convey that something is neither very good nor very bad; but just so-so...but life goes on. Paul wrote the song when the Beatles were in India, and he was breaking up with Jane Asher and starting a relationship with Linda Eastman. When the Beatles became famous, Paul didn't want to get married; he saw how things were going with John and his wife, Cynthia, and wanted no part of it. However, he started feeling differently about marriage after he met Linda. Perhaps he wrote the lyrics foreseeing or forecasting his future life as a married man and a father. Listen to the refrain in the chorus of the song! He even predicts that the woman he marries will stay at home and do her pretty face and in the evening, she still sings it with the band. When Paul created the group WINGS, Linda, indeed, became his wife, bore him children, and sang with the band.

How can anyone listen to this and not smile? Pure fun! The guy in the picture you pointed to was Jimmie Nicol, who filled in for Ringo during a worldwide tour. Ringo had tonsillitis and had to take time to recover. 🌺✌️

Ob la di, ob la da was a phrase paul heard popularised by Jimmy Scott, a London-based Nigerian musician whenever he was asked how he was doing. It meant life goes on.

When you asked who is that, it is a drummer named Jimmy Nicol. Ringo had become ill and they got Nicol to help them on tour until Ringo was back. He was famous for about 3 weeks in 1964, then went back into obscurity.

Paul's bouncing bass line makes the song. ☮💚🎶

If only it was Paul playing. This is a pathetically bad attempt by someone to mix a cheap Karaoke version with digitally ripped, isolated vocals from the original track.

@@Vince_Steele It's still Paul's bass line, whether it's a bad karaoke version or me playing it. I like the Live in Brazille version with Paul on the Hofner.

I'm not sure if you noticed, the lyrics on screen were certainly wrong, at the very end of the song Desmond and Molly had switched places with Molly being in the market and Desmond staying at home, doing his pretty face and in the evening singing with the band

They also chose a poorly done, home altered mix with the vocals way too far back.

"Ob-La-Di-Ob-La-Da" should have been a single. It's Paul doing reggae. Another of the very versatile facets of the Beatles endless talent. A lot of people don't like this song, but I can't see why that would be. It's a bright and bouncy tune and gets you up and dancing .

When I was in high school we had a young life program and we did some fun volunteer projects and everything was up and positive. I was so surprised at who would go to meetings and participate in everything we did. The coolest and the most popular kids loved young life as much as we nerds and dorks did. Every meeting had sing alongs and we always had several Beatles songs we always sang along to. The really fun ones were the ones that we sang on our trips and on the bus to events. It would never have been so popular and loved without those Beatles songs. ❤️

I suspect that in the writing process for this song, "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da " was original a working line/ title for this song and they grew to like the sound / cadence of it.

The guy on the right in the photo was a stand in drummer called Jimmy Nickle's who filled in for Ringo when they toured parts of Australia and New Zealand while Ringo was in hospital with an illness. When Ringo was well enough he flew out to the Beatles and took over.

A cover recording by the Scottish pop band Marmalade, released in November 1968, became the most commercially successful of all the cover versions of songs from The Beatles. It reached number 1 on the Record Retailer chart (subsequently the UK Singles Chart) in January 1969, making Marmalade the first Scottish artist to top that chart.

Back from 1989-1993 there was a TV show called "Life Goes On" and this was the theme song, although the song came out in the late 60's on the White Album..... the dhow was ground-breaking because one of it's stars was Chris Burke who was born with Down's Syndrome and he played Corky Thatcher, a teen adjusting with his family with his issues.... very popular at the time

The white album is just magical when listen to All the way through you guys have a great weekend.👍
