This program was kept alive artificially for a decade before its official death. It had its best ratings in the noon time slot, the lunch hour shared with bigger hits Search For Tomorrow and Guiding Light in the 50s and 60s. Its heyday passed when in 1968-69 creator Roy Winsor retired his production company that put out Secret Storm and Love Of Life. CBS didn’t cancel it at that point, but took the show over. It spun off a more daring program Where The Heart Is for the noon slot, bumping Love Of Life to 11:30. It had a ratings struggle throughout the 70s. No one would’ve been surprised if Love Of Life had been terminated in ‘75 instead of Edge Of Night but CBS stuck with it for years. By the 4:00 move Love Of Life was more remembered than viewed. Still, it was sad, then as now, to see a long-standing production canceled no matter how many second chances it’d been given. Truth be told, this opening was far more accomplished than the writing and acting during these years.

Yes, LOL was long on life support during it last decade, and CBS might better have axed LOL instead of EON in '75. EON might have rebounded with a better slot at CBS; even 11:30am ET might have served EON better than the preemptions at ABC.
@ericnelson9100

@@hodjpodj3958 LOL had been rising in the ratings at that point in time; plus its stories (mainly the return of Meg Dale and the Ben-Betsy-Arlene saga) generated much buzz and it was ninth out of 14. It actually garnered higher ratings than both General Hospital and One Life To Live, which both were in slumps. Remember, that same year the cast was featured on the first Soap Opera Digest Cover, and Sammy Davis Jr did a cameo at his own request. Also, unlike EON, Search For Tomorrow and Secret Storm, it was never a ratings powerhouse by any stretch, so unlike those shows, there was never any dramatic fall from the top. It's audience was more loyal and steady as opposed to massive and gigantic. You also need to factor in that in some areas it's timeslot was as early as 10:30A, competing, which would have made a top tier ratings place impossible. So from a business perspective, it made more sense to axe EON. Plus, EON had a high male/younger person audience; it would have tanked in an early timeslot!

@@ericnelson9100 Yes, LOL saw a brief ratings spike ca. '75 due to retooled stories, absence of soap competition, and position as lead-in to rising Y&R in many markets. However, in its nearly twenty years at CBS, EON had posted higher ratings than LOL in every season but two. EON had reached a solid #2 in three very competitive seasons, won an outstanding series Emmy in '73, garnered an Emmy for writer H. Slesar in '74, and later received numerous acting nominations to LOL's one. EON was the stronger show historically. Still, LOL served its modest, traditional function as the CBS opening soap. Keeping LOL, not EON, in '75 left the CBS schedule in something like a holding pattern. In my view, the question of whether to ax LOL or EON in '75 is about a toss-up.

Re EON slot at ABC. 4pm EST was a notorious burial ground for soaps: TSS, Somerset, LOL, even DS all died natural deaths there. EON proved no exception and got lower ratings at ABC than it had at CBS 2:30pm EST against The Doctors. Many ABC affiliates dropped EON entirely or dumped it at 10:30am EST or worse. With the hour shows increasingly occupying the choice mid-afternoon slots, 11:30am EST, by process of elimination, presented in my view the only realistic, viable option for EON at ABC. LOL, no juggernaut or colossus, never faced serious soap competition at 11:30, and EON most certainly could have held its own creditably against it.

@@hodjpodj3958 EON was starting to suffer in the ratings at that time as CBS had moved the show to an earlier time slot at the request of P&G who wanted all their shows to air one after another. Personally, I never saw the resemblance between the two. There was definitely a resemblance between Margaret Colin (Margo) and Mary Linda Rapeleye (Maggie), but I just never saw it between Sward and Rapeleye.

CBS did that on purpose, as they knew that would put the final nail in the coffin. LOL was primarily an old-fashioned soap, hence it worked best with an earliest-as-possible timeslot. In researching past TV schedule from 1979 (CBS moved the show to 4pm/3pm CT in April 1979 out of its longtime slot at 11:30/10:30am), several stations including CBS owned stations moved the show to Noon/11am after Price is Right or they aired it at 3:30/2:30pm after Guiding Light. I never understood why CBS didn't air it at 3:30/2:30pm anyway where it would be in pattern with the other soaps, but instead put reruns of M*A*S*H there and gave LOL a network time of 4pm/3pm where most stations pre-empted it.

It sounds like CBS despite claims to the contrary was really looking to cancel LOL while giving the excuse they tried to save the program. As director Larry Auerbach (may he RIP) who served thru LOL's entire run observed during the soap's eulogy, the 4pm time slot was better geared to programming more conducive to young children coming home from school. If CBS was sincerely trying to save LOL they could have moved up the start time to 11 or 1130am - not ideal but this way they could still expand Y&R to an hour, keeping some of it within the coveted lunchtime spot for Eastern time.
@alexisdiva9

They (CBS) was looking to cancel the show so they put it in the graveyard spot of 4PM to supposedly try to "save" it - and then when it didn't work out they could use the excuse we tried everything we could to save it. They didn't even give the cast and crew a month's cancellation notice, meaning there was no time to try to find another network to pick it up or have it syndicated and precious little time for people to contact their agents, update their resumes, etc.

Man, they sure don't make themes like this anymore. Very classy and innovative opening; a little different from what I remember though. Wasn't Arlene"s photo by herself, in the center of the frame; perhaps this was added later?
@TimsDale4ever
4 жыл бұрын
There were 2 openings during this time period from 1977-1980. The first one ran from fall 1977 up until sometime in the spring of 1979 I believe. And yes, Arlene (as well as all the others) were pictured by themselves. As best I can remember, she would appear as a non moving sideways glance at her face, which quickly vanished to show her coming to the front of the screen front ways before disappearing into the next character. Also, the last character to appear in the 1977 version would show a man's face drifting back to the center of the screen, and then his picture would split apart into two identical pictures, and each picture would float to the two corners of the screen, one at the top and one at the bottom, and then the title design would appear between him once his 2 pictures moved apart wide enough to see the title...………. On another note, the show's EXTRAORDINARY closing sequence during this same time started with a different 8 or so cast pictures floating back and forth as the credits faded in and out over them -- then returning to the 8 or so that were featured in the opening -- starting with Vanessa again. This never ending revolving of about 16 cast pictures kept going on and on until the end of the credit display was done for that episode...………….What really blew my mind in a bad way was starting somewhere in 1979 and continuing all the way to the end of the show on 02/01/80, they got rid of the beautiful closing sequence I mentioned above, and replaced it with THE most boring background you could imagine. They would film a still shot of one of the sets furniture with no visible characters moving or talking, and the credits would crawl up from the bottom as the usual LOL theme played. I never could understand why they went to such a boring closing sequence when they already had perfection...…………..I have searched all over youtube but haven't been able to find a closing sequence like I've described above. There is at least one closing sequence featuring the boring view of one of the sets as the credits scroll up, but I'm wanting to see the closing sequence that still featured the floating cast shots behind the credits. It was unbelievably beautiful, and depending on what day of the week it was could run as long as 2 minutes. Hardy's ending version of this theme was a much longer, more grandeur theme to accommodate the 2 minutes or so. If VCR's had been around then, I now would have at least one tape loaded to the max with these closing sequences. Yes, I was obsessed with this show's opening and closing sequences back then -- and even though there were other shows that were good, NOTHING compared to Love of Life's.
