Christmas growing up in Derry always meant sing songs around the piano. Here’s a song that would have featured regularly and it still has a certain magic for me.This, without doubt is one of the classic ‘parlour songs’.
It was written by an Irish songwriter, James Lynam Molloy,(1837-1909) who also contributed ‘The Kerry Dances’ and ‘Bantry Bay’ to the Great Irish Songbook.
Sadly he is not much celebrated and most people have never heard of him but I believe he belongs up there with the best. The song has a lovely wistful quality, enhanced here by the soft tones of Geraldine’s voice.
Sit back, relax and let the music wash over you.
