The Who are a great British rock band formed in London in 1964. They are considered one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century & have sold over 100 million records worldwide. They have so many great songs such as "I Can't Explain", "The Kids Are Alright", "My Generation", "Who Are You", "Won't Get Fooled Again", "Substitute", "Happy Jack", "I Can See For Miles", "Behind Blue Eyes", "Boris The Spider", "Pictures Of Lily", "Magic Bus", "Pinball Wizard" etc.

The Who were amongst the greatest acts of the 60's, into the 70's, up there with the Stones and Led Zep. Their back catalogue is older than me, and I was born before the moon landing. The move that Pete Townshend does with the guitar is the windmill. John Entwistle once said he was a babysitter for 3 unruly tottlers. Yes he enjoyed himself very much he never showed it. Back then they felt the music they played. The music always came first along with the fans. These four guys enjoyed being on stage entertaining the fans.

The reason Keith Moon had to wear headphones while playing is that the electric organ parts were on tape, so he had to have those really loud in his ears to be able to keep the rest of the band on pace. The reason they are duct taped to his head is that he plays so wild.

While there are many exemplary and special voices in early rock, Roger Daltrey is one of the earliest BIG rock voices. I don't know how else to put it. A voice that commands the spotlight, and the band organized to highlight that voice. Other bands after often had someone with a special voice like that, like Aerosmith, Queen, Boston, Journey, Van Halen, AC/DC. There's a lot of other singers with great and distinctive voices, like Michael Jackson, that weren't BIG voices in this rock style.

The next Who video you do should be their performance of "A Quick One (While He's Away)" from the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus movie. This was a documentary style concert of mostly The Rolling Stones, with some guests performances by other artists. The Who were just finishing a long tour, and are working together fantasticly and with huge energy. Its a tremendous performance. So good in fact, that rumors swirl that they upstaged the Rollings Stones so badly that they didn't release the movie for decades.

Each of The Who are in their zones. Bass player (John Entwistle) looks ubinvolved until you watch what his hands are doing - he's as deep into as anybody else and such a good player he's painting fills along with the drummer (Keith Moon.) Headset taped to head so he could hear a click track to keep him in time and so the headset would not come off - he's comparatively restrained in this performance but is widely regarded as one of the most unique and sonically gifted drummer of that era. The singer (Roger Daltrey) used to sing blues and R&B before he became one of greatest and most recognizable rock singers of the 20th and 21st centuries. The guitar player (Pete Townshend) also wrote most of The Who's songs is drunk on cognac in this performance, and is with Jimi Hendrix the most influential rock guitarist of the time. Each of these musicians are legends in their own right but it was with The Who the four created a brand of "heavy" rock with lyrics going beyond the typical love song and opened the doors to concept albums, hard rock, heavy metal, and punk. The music of The Who still sounds fresh, Legendary band.
