I've been struggling with the verse John 3:16 for quite some time now after joining a local growth group. Yes I understand that God is holy, but I can't seem to bridge it with His love for us who was once His enemy and even those who have yet to believe in Him. Another thing that I want to ask about is, how do we reconcile the doctrine of election to John 3:16 if the verse said the 'world'?

Good question...but what is exactly your point here...sorry maybe I'm interpreting your question in my own meaning...can you elaborate more...thx

I guess my first point is, how do we see God's love in that He gave us salvation through His Son when He did everything for His name's sake? And the next one would be, if the doctrine of election is true, which I know it is, how to we interpret John 3:16?

Amazing questions Charmaine....keep seeking Him on this and He will bring such revelation to you regarding this! What I know is that God is Holy.....special...set apart. He is not like man. I was just reading Hosea and he states this so eloquently and incredibly in chpt 11 verse 9. Read it and meditate on His wonderful word. Perhaps the answers to your questions will come in vibrant and clear revelation.... and if they do not....are you content to not know all the answers and trust? God bless you. Much love to you. I will be praying for you.

@@karenbenn7680 Thank you sister. I came from a Methodist background and from my understanding now of the doctrine of sin, the gospel that was preached from our church on sin is very much downplayed. And now that I understand better of how God views it, my mind went to the other extreme in that God carried out His plan of salvation for His name's sake but minus the love because we're so unlovable and totally depraved. So that's where I struggle with right now.

These are great questions, Charmaine, and deserve a more thorough answer than can fit nicely in a KZitem comment. So instead I will try to point you in the right direction by asking some questions that I encourage you to think about: 1) How is holiness defined in the Bible itself and, based on that definition, what does it mean that "God is holy"? 2) The nation of Israel is referred to as God's "chosen" people, but what does that mean? What were they chosen for? How does that relate to "election" in the New Testament? Keep seeking and you WILL find!
