Hi Rebecca, OMG these are beautiful. You have inspired this old lady so much, that I've not only finally dyed some yarn myself, my husband is helping me dye yarn and is enjoying playing with colour. I may have to go get some minis now and try this technique.

I love that you are doing this together! I still need to get my husband to dye some yarn. Maybe I need to have him follow a tutorial of mine. :D

I love the red-toned ones. At first I cried a little inside when you put the red all over but it looks beautiful. I would actually like to try this technique myself because it looks so fun!

These pans are my favorites for almost everything. I have 2 and I want more even though I can't fit more on the stove at once. ;) There's a link in the video description for the exact pan I use (full size 4" deep)

The colors strike fast enough since the water level is pretty low. If they could mix, you would lose the different tones and hues.

Your skeins always look amazing but is there anyway we can see how it knits up? I'm hesitant to try your method without seeing the finished project on at least one of your dyeing sessions. Thank you.

This is a great question! I have a few videos I'm working on that will include finished projects in the end. I typically only include swatches in self striping type projects, but I'm hoping to share more FO's in the future.

Wow Rebecca you really getting me to think different about mini skeins. Thanks sooo much! These are so pretty. Did you use mostly primaries on purpose to avoid making mud?
@ChemKnitsTutorials
5 жыл бұрын
No. I wanted mostly red on this set, and picked blues and yellows to give the red other undertones.

Can you tell me why some people use "kettles" like pots and some use sheet pans? Does it give different effects or something or just preference?
@ChemKnitsTutorials
4 жыл бұрын
This is a great question! It ultimately comes to preference. The three main ways I dye yarn myself is in a kettle, in a steam pan like this one, or by handpainting on the counter and then steam setting in a steamer basket. As for the wider steam pan vs kettle, for me I like the extra surface area. I can spread the yarn out more which gives me more control over the placement of different colors. For some techniques it might not make a difference, but for others it is soooo nice to have that larger work surface.

Would you also be kind enough to tell me why some people use powder and some premix it and put it in squirt bottles? Thank you!
@ChemKnitsTutorials
4 жыл бұрын
This is another great question. The short answer is personal preference and the technique that you want to achieve. For the sharpest speckles, you want to use dry powder. BuT you can get some larger specks of color from using tiny drops of liquid. I use both in a lot of techniques on the channel.

When you say a 1% solution, what does that mean? How many teaspoons per 8 ounce bottle do you use?
@ChemKnitsTutorials
5 жыл бұрын
A 1% stock solution is 1 g of dye per 100 mL. I forget if these are 16oz bottles or what. Typically I either do 5 g in 500mL or 10 g in 1 liter
