back when i was a kid and actually bought stuff from petco i got some amazon swords for my 10gal-fresh and there was just a tiny little leaf with a tiny little red hair coming out. it looked like a dying baby leaf blade to me ( very new to hobby at the time) and it turned out it was java fern. Well the Amazon sword barely survived a year... but that TINY (pinky nail sized) java fern... COMPLETELY took over my tank. Which i liked/allowed. I dont know how familiar anyone here is with cactus, but i would compare these to prickly pears - in regards to care/hardiness. They're the kind of cactus you can just literally rip off a leaf from and haphazardly throw it anywhere on the ground and in no time have a fully established plant.

I enjoyed watching this video. I’ve read several books on Planted Tanks. “Sunken Gardens,” by Karen A. Randall was a treasure to read. “Encyclopedia of Aquarium Plants,” was another fantastic book to read. There are a few more books I read, but then I might put you to sleep. My questions are about Eleocharis párvula (Dwarf Hairgrass). When it carpets, does it hold back gases that are dangerous to the fish in the tank? The other question is, Does the Hairgrass mats like the Monte Carlo Plant? Does the Hairgrass rises above the substrate as it mats, or if it mats at all? I’ve grown many plants before, but never Hairgrass. I would like to propagate this plant in my tank. Thank you for sharing!

@TheWaterBox

@@JoeBurner1720 You're going to at least need two or three of them to get enough coverage with 50w floods on a 125 (maybe more depending on the spread of the lights). Any of the plants mentioned in this video can be done with this set up. As we don't have much of a reading on the substrate level of how well those lights you are using I can only guess that you are going to only get low light at the level (don't quote me on that. It's just a guess). The problem with flood lights is never one brand is made the same as another and we can't judge on wattage other than guesstimating the intensity based on how much power it uses. And even at that, the generic flood light manufactures always over states their wattage. So I start at 2 or 3 lights for coverage and hang about 1 foot from the surface and go from there to see how well it does.

I don't know why but java fern is the one plant that always dies a slow tortured death in any tank I have had - high tech with CO2, brighter lighting and fertilizer dosing or low tech with basic filtration and low lighting. Have tried softwater and hardwater. Other plants (anubias, crypts, echninodorus, crinums etc all do well) but the java fern turns to a brown mush and disintegrates never to grow back. As for UV being harmful, all light in some way can be harmful because we're dealing basically with some form of radiation but with the UV lights we use in our aquarium, it's still very minimal. We're not reaching deep enough into the UV spectrum. If we did it wouldn't be good for plants either.

I have a 36 bow with the light that it comes with and the plants in it won't grow exept for the Anubis looking plant I got for 3 bucks. But it's light green and transparent. I also have waster westeria and onion plants that won't grow. I have the light that it came with

It's probably your lighting. Those lights that comes with tanks aren't all that great for plants unless it was originally built for planted tanks. Are you also dosing your tank?

A fine list! I also like pearl weed (Hemianthus micranthemoides). It grows rooted or floating, grows fast and eats nitrates. Grows tall, bushy, or as a carpet, depending on how it's trimmed. Downside? Frequent trimming.

Yeh, that think needs trimming all the time. It does get annoying after a while. :) Thanks for commenting!

At the moment, one of my favorites is the java fern, "trident" - I got it a few years ago, and it's just beautiful. Low tech tank, and it's pretty big. I like how distinctive and clean it looks.

I have a 10g tank that I'd like to make planted. Is it possible to do this just from the ambient light in a living room or do I need to have a dedicated aquarium light? I guess what I'm saying is I'm not sure what "low light" means in this context. Are these plants able to be grown just by sitting in a living room?
@TheWaterBox
4 жыл бұрын
Unless you're room light is extremely bright, I doubt it'll do anything for your plants in the tank.

Thank you so much for posting the 4 part videos on how to start a planted tank it really is helping me understand the how what and why in easy terms. I plan to add another tank and I want to do a low light planted 55 gallon in the early summer. I am enjoying your videos and they are really helpful. ✨

First of all great video and second I've got a favor. Could you please go to my KZitem channel check out the 28-second video that I posted of my betta fish. I have eight but typically I tend to stick with anubias and I'm an American living in Taiwan. We don't have a large selection of aquatic plants we just recently got it in aquarium soil. Please don't hate me because my fish tanks have colored rocks. when I first started the hobby two years ago I pretty much had to create everything and figure out stuff on my own. if you could just take a look at the plants that are in the video and please tell me what it is I would be thankful

Hi @TheWaterBox! I know I am a year late but was wondering if you can answer my question. I am a new betta owner and I was told that my tank did not have enough plants for my betta Coconut to hide it. I have one Anubis nana sitting in the sand (the rimozone is NOT covered) and two betta friendly plastic plants. I did some research and I think I am going to go with the plants Lemon Bacopa Caroliniana and the Cryptocorynes Wendii both brown and green. Do you think my choices are a good idea or too much/little? I have a 5.5 Top Fin gallon tank and am planning on using the light that comes with the tank and no CO2 but I will use Seacheam root tabs. If my light is not enough, is the NICREW submersible light a good light? Thank You so much in advance?
@TheWaterBox
4 жыл бұрын
That are good choices for plants. The nana is a great choice because you betta can perch on it. You could probably get rid of those plastic plants if you got a nana in there for him to sit on. Betta's don't normally need to hide unless you got the tank sitting in a high traffic area. But more plants are always good. The Bacopa and wendii green are good choice but I'm not sure the brown will do all that well with the light that came with the tank. The submersible light isn't really a plant light. I won't do anything for the plants. I would suggest something like the Finnex String Ray Clip On instead: amzn.to/2CCvsBp That should provide you more than enough light for those plants at the size of tank.
