I used this as a class activity for end-of-year days just after a unit on the age of exploration. I gave an introduction on Masts of explorers ships, played a video, and explained how the masts of the 16th century were limited by one tree trunk. Later engineers had to figure out how to combine tree trunks together to make stronger masts. Then segway into this activity. Activity 2 could also be used for extending the bow of the ship. but we never got there in the 45 minute period.

Love it! Going to use this. A low tech challenge I've done is 6 sheets of paper with a meter of tape and it had to hold as many text books as possible while being as high as possible. The best design was the 6 sheets rolled into cylinders and place together. It held 5 text books. The kids were floored.

Fabulous idea!! I have a "Aerospace Engineering" class to do tonight for a group of Civil Air Patrol Cadets and you solved my dilemma of what to do with them and get them some hands on time. Thanks so much and I can't wait to try it... I have a real good group of kids and I know they will get into this. Thanks so much!

I'm glad you include footage of the students actually doing the assignment as I feel that's what missing from a lot of teacher KZitem videos (granted I know a lot of schools have strict regulations on if you can include footage of students on a personal social media account). Did you have a student film while you were measuring?

+Thom Gibson thanks. I thought that it really made it more real. While measuring I just handed off the camera to one student as needed.

Here's a challenge for you; go back in time and help Ford make the best possible car with the materials and technology of his time but the knowledge of ours. Will color-shifting paint make the cut?

Were the students allowed to tear the sheets or only fold them?

They could tear them but I did not allow them to use scissors.
