I really like the rat trap idea, not something you would normally see in a survival kit but since you have a full bucket a worth while investment. As another comment suggested you need something for water purification and bleach will work as long as you know how much to use. Print up a card with instructions. I would put another water container, Lows should have some kind of bottle available. And finally my number one survival item, bright orange garbage bags. They work as a poncho, tarp, signaling device and rain water catcher.

@ericsmith1508

actually no. most likely that was the result of a previous customer picking it up then placing it back in the wrong location. happens all the time. sometimes it can be the result of an employee not looking closely enough at the stocking numbers when placing stock an the shelf, but either way it was NOT a bait and switch because i'm certain it was not at all intentional on Lowe's part. and not only that if something is misplaced or mispriced like that it's Lowe's policy to sell it at the lower price. he could've bought it at 14 bucks if he'd known that and pressed the issue. it doesn't even take much "pressing".

You probably should have added extra batteries for that head lamp. A larger flashlight or torch of some kind would have been a good addition. The jerky is a good addition, but not enough. Some 3mm speck plastic sheeting for water proofing or an an addition to your tarp as a shelter. Would also help in collecting addition water. But you really don't have everything that you are going to need. Clothing, cordage, shelter, combustion, water and weather. A map of the area that you will be in or traveling to. And I'm just wondering how much does that bucket weigh with everything inside?

I like this video. The truth is that if there's an emergency coming down this can help you with just one stop as opposed to running from store to store. As the paint tin fits in the pail it could hold dried food. I suppose I'd look for a lifestraw as well.

I can't believe your the first to mention a simple rat trap for catching small game! Imagine trying to figure out all those other primitive trap setups when your hungry, scared, wet, and tired. The bucket kit will be good for the car or stored at the places you are bugging out to. Nice to sit on at the camp site and get water hauled back to camp. Don't know if Lowe's sells them but fishing line and hooks maybe? A compass also helps if they sell those. I don't know if they do or not. And, if they have it, a radio of some sort, preferably one with a crank handle to recharge or solar panel to recharge.

I really like what you did. I would probably get a bigger first aide kit with snake bite kit in it, some emergency blankets, plastic trash bags, zip lock bags, zip ties, one of those wind up flashlight/portable radios, a compass, a solar charger, another tarp, aluminum foil, candles, hard candy, honey, water purification tables, salt tablets, electrolyte powder and mosquito netting, to stop the bugs and to work as a net for fishing. You could also get all the material from Lowe's to build a fire piston. That would eliminate all the fire starting problems if you thought in advance. I really liked that you grabbed wire to make animal traps. Perhaps a survival manual in the bucket and a topographical map as well. Perhaps a collapsible back pack to put the stuff in after it comes out of the bucket for transport. I like the bucket idea because it makes a great seat, carry water, carry firewood, easy to transport in your car. Good info, definitely got my gears turning! Thanks

If someone can't afford a $500 kit, it is better to put together an inexpensive kit to keep around until you can afford to replace your inexpensive items with the more "reliable" expensive items. There are some things that other people have mentioned that would be a good addition, once you un-package all that stuff you will be able to fit a lot more in the bucket. Few bags of jerky, can be used as bait as well. Like the mouse or rat trap idea and the cord. I think that is it.

I don't remember what video I saw it in but, you can make a heater out of that paint can. All it takes is to stuff a roll of toilet paper ( remove the card board tube) in to the can and add alcohol. Put the top on tight. Duct tape a paint can opener and lighter to the side of the can. There it is, a portable heater. It can be used in a car. Just remember to open the window a bit. It can be used under a tarp or in a shelter. Pack more alcohol to keep it filled ( just don't add the alcohol while the fire is burning) and you could burn it for a few days. Be safe with it. It is a fire after all. If you place it under your dashboard in your car it will melt it. If you place it under wood it will scorch it and could start a unwanted fire.

I've bought two of the Kobalt combo kits with multi-tool and knife. I think they were about $13-14 each, not $20. They come with a belt sheath that fits both items. Very convenient. I LOVE the knife included. It is super sharp, locks into place, and folds up nicely. I use my frequently and it has yet to need sharpening. The Multi-tool in alright. My main complaint about it is that some of the blades and tools folded in are difficult to pull out and use with the fingernail notches. (Always feels like my nail is about to split before the tool will be opened enough.) The pliers and wire cutter part of the multi-tool is very good. I also like the saw blade and file. The knife blade on it is average at best. Still, for the money you are paying, the whole combo is a very good deal I think. I keep one in my go bag in the trunk of my car, and the other in my bigger backpack at home. I recommend them, especially for the value conscious prepper.

I like the bucket over the Home Depot bag. When all else fails you can put a trash bag in the bucket and you have an instant potty. When you are finished just tie the bag or use a zip tie to close it. You might want to include hand sanitizer or soap and something that can be used as TP. I think lowes carries both of those items. I also got a headlight ball cap there. That gives your head some cover and gives you an extra light.

I work at Lowe's so this was an interesting video to see. I'm always "shopping" on the job as you call it. I have several of the items you listed here, but at our store we also started carrying 50 ft lengths of black 550 paracord. The Coast lights are excellent and I have one, but I also just bought a small Mag light. They went on sale half price (don't know if any other stores did this) until Jan 2nd. The newer models have 4 modes. 100%, 25%, blink, and SOS so I had to get one for my car pack. One thing you missed in hardware were the bright orange tent stakes for the cordage and tarp. Strong yet lightweight plastic. Hi viz, and could be sharpened for 'other' purposes. Around $5 for a pack. Overall a good setup. We also have hand warmers and glow sticks by the way. =)

Unfortunately my pay is a little 'behind the scenes' as well. lol. So I doubt I'd be able to make one such as this. I do have a survival pack but it's always a work in progress as I can typically get one thing at a time for it. I always enjoy vids such as this, where you see just how well you you can make something solely off of what one business offers. Walmart might be a better solution as they have a designated "sporting goods" section. But some places have more than you would think if you know what too look for and know how to improvise.

It goes for any place that's a member of the retailers association (which is almost every chain store). The problem is, you have to ask for it and not all clerks are aware of the procedure.

I would highly, and I DO mean HIGHLY suggest avoiding Energizer brand flashlights. I have been gifted them and even purchased the exact same head light, all of them lasted on average of a month. I've had to return them so much I'm not allowed to make any returns through the local sporting goods store Stay away from Maglites too, especially the traditional bulb type. The quality of the flashlights has gone down quite a bit from the days of camping with grandpa and beating the shit outta each other with a massive D-cell powered flashlight. Plus bulbs are hard to find for the old school variants.

Good idea for a video. I like the idea of making a kit to help out others. One big thing I see missing is a way to get/make safe water. You definitely don't want to cook in that coated paint can. If Lowes doesn't have any water filters, you could get hth pool shock, and use a tiny amount to make a bleach solution to sanitize water. You would need a few containers... Lowes doesn't sell any metal water bottles?

I'd throw in a flat file too, to sharpen all those cheap blades. Lowes must have some sort of pull-through sharpener, too, I"d think.

so i watched this, the walmart, and the home depot videos, but your spending around $200 each, so do you use all these? or do you return everything?

I am constantly building and refining kits, so I often sell or trade items that I buy for one kit. I sometimes return some items, but I overall I count what I spend as a cost for making the videos for the viewers.

Pretty good ideas. Liked the rat traps & jerky which could be food or bait for traps.Little excessive on the knives.I think Lowe's used to have backpacks of some kind. like the tarps also for shelter.

Just curious, does Lowe's (no Lowe's store anywhere near where i live, nor any type of store like it) stock any type of Mylar Blanket that could be added to the Kit, considering that with the way the weather has been the last year or so, people go off the road a lot in cold weather and i was thinking of what cold weather items could be added to the kit.

+Craig Bomberger I do not think I have seen an emergency blanket at Lowe's or Home Depot? But you are correct, emergency blanket and Bivy are good survival items. I think he was just showing that a one store shopping trip could get you a substantial "survival bucket".

Gonna make one of these now..I have a bug out bag with some high quality items and extra ammo in it but yeah what if I want to help someone else out, I can just lend my buddy this bucket and not really care if I get any of the stuff back..or better I still have my bag and this..in my truck makes me double prepared.

I would add a dust mask and maybe a cheap painting suit made usually from Tyvek material so breathable but waterproof. Also maybe a few rags from paint section for bathroom/washing/bandana uses to name a few things off the top of my head.

Very few if any plans survive an entire situation. Gear, knowledge and tools are a huge help but one must have the will to survive and the ability to adapt as well as to be able to use whatever may be at hand to advantage. Any gear at all is a plus in an emergency situation. Of course I'd like to have more than that bucket of gear, but it's a lot better than nothing. Great video bud

Kobalt is 100% No Hassel Lifetime Warrantied and they stand by it. You can abuse the shit out of Kobalt hand tools (mechanics tools, concrete tools, garden tools and other types) and they will exchange them NO QUESTIONS ASKED! Love Lowes!

When i was homeless, I carried water back to my camp in 1 qt sport bottles. The sport drink was about .68, then i had a qt bottle to use. I could save money by getting similar items at Wal Mart, but this exercise was GREAT.

Throw a few contractor bags in the bucket. They can be cut open and used to make a shelter. Use the duct tape to reinforce the corners then put up the shelter using the small rope.

Lots of good things, but in all these prepping videos, everybody seems to have forgotten a water filter or a transfer pump, like Harbor Freight Tool's #66418, or something similar. Also, don't forget Costco for large containers of nuts, M&M's, etc, and batteries. An employee told me that the Kirkland brand was made by Duracell. Great deals when they are on sale. Costco even has their own prepper kits. Costco(.)com, and enter "american preparedness" in the search box. Not cheap, but could be a time saver. The Storm Whistle is a good signaling device. I have one, and when I worked at an airport, it could be heard over jet engines. I would add a magnesium fire starter along with the matches. Thank you.
