In the 1970’s in Canada when my dad wanted to treat himself to a premium import beer there were two options back then. Heineken and Lowenbrau. Lowenbrau had a foil wrapped cap which made it look special. Back then basic lagers were all you could get and these two were definitely a step above Labbatt Blue or Molson Golden.

About 15 in the mid nineties, my old man used to get few crates in for Christmas and New year, remember sneaking quite a few. Solid beer, the imported stuff anyway. I remember drinking with teachers on a end of school trip to Blackpool, how times have changed.

Thanks for the review. A session beer. Picked one up at my local Japanese supermarket along with some others and was thinking of making it the last of the night. I think I'll go for more of a hefeweizen Japanese/German beer based on this review. Cheers man.

@@TheBierHooligan I had Lowenbrau in Australia when I was visiting my Auntie and cousins. In Brisbane in November 2017. Lowenbrau is easily available at every Dan Murphys liquire stores. Over there. it easily beats the Australian macro Lagers like Crown lager Tooies VB by a huge amount.

Lowenbrau was, and still is one of my favourites. I was brought up in Malta where Lowenbrau had a brewery. Now no longer. Still cans sold in Malta 🇲🇹. As for your question......I was brought up on Cisk Lager. From the age of about fourteen.

Used to drink this as teen in the 80s. Plus what ever we could get our hands on. All the Buds including Bud Dry, which didn’t last long, MGD, Molsen Ice were some of our regulars. Tried same really awful beer like Black Label and Piels which were about 7$ for a case, but they were never bought a second time. Didn’t start drinking interesting stuff until we went to the pubs.

Lowenbrau. Ambrosial. Hard to find on draft these days, Haven't seen it for at least ten years here in Leigh on sea. Bier Hooligan, any chance of a review on any or all of Bottled Pilsner urquel, Budvar, Super Bock, Sagres, Coral, Mahou (Red), Alhambra 1925 and Cruzcampo? . Much appreciated mate. Bottled Mahou (Red) Being a current favourite of mine. Great Channel.

Nucleated glasses I think are designed to aid the head retention. Supposed to keep the beer in glass fresher for longer.
@joffhall81

The Bier Hooligan it’s all to do with the different ways we like the beers to be served. On the continent they like beers with a big continental head and as such the head is retained mostly to the bottom with the natural carbonation and the fact it’s served with a large foamy head. Here in the UK we have an accepted size of about 1-2 fingers any higher and we feel we are getting shorted or ripped off. Due to this smaller head on the beer the head disperses really fast and makes the beer look flat. Nucleated glasses allow the pubs to serve a smaller head while allowing the head to be retained to protect the beer so it doesn’t look flat. I do agree this is a UK thing but it seems to be all the continental breweries such as Heineken/AB InBev that have created these nucleated glasses to keep the beer optimal while offering a UK serve/head. Again It’s nothing to do with the quality difference of beers but more to do with the different way we prefer to serve beers here in the UK compared to the continent. Joff 🍺🍺🍺

The leffe blonde chalice which they released in 2016, which took 18 months to develop is nucleated, so the Europeans do use them.
@joffhall81

The Bier Hooligan I agree with this as the older leffe chalices I have (1x50cl and 2x 25cl) are not nucleated but have a straight stem. The newer ones I have are the 2/3 pint ones from BH with the fancy stem and those are indeed nucleated. I still think it’s down to preference of serve here in the U.K. compared Europe as we prefer a small head compared to euro serve. Those who know beer know that the head is there to serve a purpose (protect the beer from oxidation) and actually prefer the beer to be served correctly rather than the U.K. standard.
