Whether playing miked or unmiked synthetic vs natural skins depends on the type of band or ensemble played with.If the conga player is with a traditional Latin group there is usually no electric guitar, especially not one with distortion effects.I challenge anyone to tell me they can hear ringing or a tinny sound from any drums when there is electric guitar with distortion effects, miked or unmiked.Fiberglass congas and or synthetic heads give more projection of the sound in that setting. Also synthetic's cut better in waterfront resort areas, especially near salt/ocean water. These synthetic heads have their purpose, that's one of the reasons a lot of pro's play them.

I have multiple natural & synthetic heads for each wood & fiberglass drum I own. I get call outs a lot & take synthetics when I'm not sure who is doing the sound or who I play with. In my opinion, .natural will always sound better than synthetics, when i have full control of a live gig, which is rarely the case. 90% of the time I'm using synthetics and know there's a difference.

@@waveriderz2687 Nice comment, which I think is the overall sentiment. Synthetics has made life easier for percussionist, is practical and save times for other things, however, deep inside I think each one of us like cow and mule's heads sound. At the end, it's all about the likes. Stay safe everyone.

@@gabrielzayas5486 I believe cow, mule, and steer have a warmer sound. However, if you are to go with a synthetic, the Remo Nuskyn will probably come the closest to that sound. Just my opinion. Peace

I have both remo and rawhide conga heads. it confirms my opinion. best deep sounds on congas are the wooden ones with rawhide . the fiberglass congas sound too canny/echoey. the remo head makes the wooden conga sound like the fiberglass congas. Stick with all natural Wood and Rawhide for Best Quality Percussion Sound. Trust Me

Mantio percussion steer heads wish had they improve your congas sound by far man! No ringing over tones just pure clear tones, crisp slaps & yes it will improve your rubber wood congas! The mantio percussion steer heads will not work for entry level congas just professional congas! Hope this helps for my friend Eric Perez uses rubber wood meinl congas & his mantio percussion steer heads sound wow!

If the heads sound dull I would change the heads! Mantio percussion steer heads are also pre mounted if you don't want to mount the head yourself & break in time would think two to three months!

They are very close. Remo advertise their Nuskyn heads as sounding the closest to animal skins. Also the Lp rawhides are actually water buffalo hides. Not exactly the best compared to steer, cow, or mule.

Whereas there are certainly pros and cons to both, the feel and sound of rawhide (1st) and water buffalo (2nd) are superior to any synthetic heads I've tried so far. (all the Remos and the Evans)..the cons to the skins are related to their natural absorption of humidity and so they are more likely to get out of tune. The pro to the synthetics is volume, important to those professional players who need to break out of their orchestra...but at the expense of ring and feel. The other pro to the synthetics is that they are much easier on the hands...water buffalo hurts the most and steer rawhide not so much. Bottom line, if you're a busy pro, you already know the synthetics are convenient and consistent - natural heads vary in texture and thickness quite a bit. But for the purist who's willing to put up with nature's idiosyncracies, nature's rawhide skin is sweetly superior followed by water buffalo. Try for yourself and be comfortable with your choice.

Without a doubt, real skin is vastly superior. I put Fyberskyns on my Matadors and they sounded like tin cans. I got rid of some of the ring with pieces of felt stuck inside the head. After a while I kind of got used to the ring and liked not having to tune and retune so much. But then after a couple of months I switched back just to see? Oh my! Never again will I go back to anything synthetic, the quality of sound difference is dramatic.
