Yes, one of the factors of a Winston draft is that there's a pull between quality and quantity. Like how their first pile kept getting bigger because there were a lot of ok cards in it, but they wanted to see if they could get something better.

If you Winston Draft, you NEED somebody to just watch you so that you remember to put cards on piles. I drafted Kaladesh this way with a friend and we constantly forgot to put cards back.

It will be interesting to see what happens if you guys do more Winstons. My experience is that it's the exact opposite of a draft league...more similar to a team draft but even more extreme. Hate good cards and big piles and make a more functional deck than your opponent.

No memory problems: Place three identical double sided tokens down in front of where each pile will go (typically found in products like deck builders toolkits, or just use a piece of paper with a different color on each side). Each player has a reminder token that matches one of the sides. On a player's turn, that player picks up a pile from any of those in front of them with their token facing up, flips the token card, lays down a new card, THEN looks at the pile to decide whether or not to draft it. If they keep the new card's already in place, if they don't they just put it back on top of the new card. Once they've chosen, flip all tokens to the other player's side. You could instead just do them in order like Graham and Ben did, but I like being able to start from whichever pile strikes my fancy.

There's a camera pointed at that specific spot on the table, which feeds into a card recognizer program hooked into the overlay - Paul's done a LRRTech stream before on how the card recognizer actually works, if you're ever curious, it should be on this channel somewhere.

I play this format a little differently that makes it a lot more fun I think. For one, we dont take the whole pile, we only take the new card the other player puts on top of the pile. This means one person doesnt get to see what the other person didnt take, and this means both players will have the same amount of cards at the end For two, you only look at the top card on each pile. Not the whole pile (because of the above mentioned rule, you're not going to be taking all those cards anyway) I think its better when you dont have information on the other one is drafting. Keeps things interesting.
@Reaverofwind
6 жыл бұрын
I don't think this is better... part of what makes drafting interesting is having information about what other players are taking. If you're doing it this way you might as well just play Sealed; it's faster to set up.
@DisregardedHappiness
6 жыл бұрын
No, you don't know what other players are taking specifically. With a full pod, there are 8 picks where you have no idea what was taken because you have not seen those packs previously. Only on your 9th pick do you see what wheeled, and even then you don't know who took what. Winston draft was created by Garfield literally to be able to have a way to 2 person draft and not be just showing What your taking and not taking
@Reaverofwind
6 жыл бұрын
I did not say "knowing the specific cards that other players are picking." The phrase I used was "information about what other players are taking." If you've ever drafted before, another word for this is a "signal," which mostly refers to which colors the players in front of you are not taking and are open for you. Looking at a whole pile in Winston draft preserves some of that. If there are a lot of decent green cards in one pile and your opponent keeps passing over them, you could consider switching to green, for example. With your rules variation, there is none of that back and forth, and the draft process becomes a solitary experience.
@DisregardedHappiness
6 жыл бұрын
Have you tried it? Its definitely very interactive. I forgot to mention one rule. Once the draft pile has all been used, you shuffle all three piles and go again. This means you both will see cards you didn't see before (the cards the other player didn't take) and that's your signal.
