We used gen1, 350 pistons. The valve reliefs were not in the right place so I re-cut them to get PTV clearance for the .650 lift. The rods are 6" gen1 also. The offset isn't the same as the LS rod but we've used the Gen 1 rods in several ls builds and they seem to work fine. We did mill .050 off of the block to get 0 deck ht. & 11.5 CR. We used a 6.0 block which is 4"bore to start with. L92 GM heads with mild port work. Feel free to contact me for more Info. Phone # listed in video. Thanks!

The sound of that idle alone at 3:57 almost made me bust a nut in my drawers...what a beautiful sound...Imagine that engine with an aluminum block in a 70ies 80ies early 90ies Iroc or T/A...late 70ies early 80ies Malibu, Cutlass, Le mans, Regal, Monte Carlo ect...all them beautiful cars that got ether a POS 3.8, 305, 307 and if lucky a 350 that made 150 hp hook to a 3spd auto...what a shame. Oh and can't forget the old late70ies rwd Vega's and Sunbirds...How many had no idea Pontiac made a Sunbird in the late 70ies lol...mini Firebird...Sorry about the day dream guys lol.

Love this stuff. I ran several destroked SBCs before I got into LS motors. These are fun to play with. I'm currently building a 314 (3.905 bore x 3.26 stroke). It's a mpg effort that my daughter and I are working for a science fair project. Hoping to combine a favorable rod/stroke ratio with some custom tuning to pull some serious mpgs.

so just out of curiosity why didn't the builder spin it past the 6400rpm ballpark? peak power at 6400 with a destroked motor I was expecting more rpm from the title of the video. not being a troll I just want to see its full potential.
@warrentrucks09
7 жыл бұрын
It sounded like he DID spin it up pretty high, passed 6400 anyway. He also didn't say he didn't spin it passed 6400 he said the peak happened at 6400rpm which IS pretty high or higher than I thought it would be considering the low compression and the mild street cam which is typical for off the shelf parts but 540hp is dam respectable and not typical for 334 cubes and mostly off the shelf parts.
@erikjp92

your airflow is limited by head/cam/springs/rockers. he could be e periencing valve float prior to 7/8k rpm. a number of factors could cause it to fall flat past 6400 rpm not requiring it to rev higher.
@headlesnorseman701

based on the sound effects it went way past 6400 rpms. it just didnt make peak power after that. you need a serious valvetrain to really make power any higher

Ctsrv hydraulic lifters are designed to limited hydraulic pump and go up to 8.5k rpm, wouldn't keep it there but they are off the shelf parts for their "factory service parts" race cars, push rods, valve springs, cam, etc would just need to match, also there are many other lifters available for max speed turning

Good Question! The Engine Masters Challenge uses a HP/TQ. per C.I. scoring system. In 2011 they had a restrictive muffler which hurt the larger engine. We found that we could score higher using a smaller displacement. We finished 13th in the compition even thouigh we had some timing isuses and droped around 50 HP and 50 ft.lb tq.at the compition.(I screwed up and didn't notice I had loaded the wrong curve in) Thanks

20+ years ago some of the theory made it seem like there was a point in piston speeds... Also in class racing where you want a certain displacement. However there are engine builders with 4.5" strokes over 10,000 RPM. And a 4" stroke can certainly do it.

@dthellland9738

good question. In theory, the the 5.3 will make less power/torque because smaller bore flows less air and increased frictional losses from faster piston speed. It would be interesting to see if there is any difference in off idle driving around torque. for street commuter car
@trentwilson855
7 жыл бұрын
there's a reason they used a 6.2 block and a 4.8 crank. the 5.3-6.2,, and all their variants, used the same size crank. the 4.8 was the oddball. the 4.8 bore didn't flow for shit, so now you have the flow and power abilities of the 6.2, and the high speed rotating assembly ability with the slower piston speed of the 4.8 crank. Google "6.2 with 4.8 crank". Hot Rod did this exact swap and got 607hp at 7400 and 450-470 ft lb at 6900. oh, and it screams like a fucking banshee.

The reason why u wouldn't start with a 5.3 is because they wanted to have a very large bore with a very short stroked, so it will have great response and rev higher the 5.3 has the same stroke as the 6.0 but the 6.0 has a 4.18 bore 5.3 has 3.8 inch bore, so the are all over-square engines but this engine is highly over square with the right engine combo with make high end hp and torque

what's the cost to duplicate this engine?
@James-WM
8 жыл бұрын
Ryan Nolan I'm having one built right now, it'll be under $4,000 by time it's done. Goals are 8,500 rpms eventually, 575 horsepower estimated currently. Approximately 11.5:1 CR, LQ9 block, LR4 crank, custom pistons, ARP hardware, ported LR4 heads, edelbrock intake and carb, LS2 timing chain, LS9 valve Springs for now, Ls1 cam, Morel hydraulic lifters. I am intending to put it in a relatively light camaro used for road race and daily duties. The whole point of the short crank was proved durability at increased rpms and everything else is there for reliability and cost savings as far as GM factory parts and the best hydraulic lifters out there. I was only going for 400 horsepower but according to the builder they expect close to 575. Probably won't push it past 7,200 rpms or so with with the LS9 Springs; they're mainly there to handle the LS1 cams lift and ramps so when I get a better cam I will probably do double beehives at the same time.

Ryan Nolan no problem man, I think it is a build most people ignore because everyone likes torque, but for my application I don't really want 600 lb ft from 1000 rpms up so the shorter stroke is great for lighter vehicles with less grip to develop torque closer to 5,000 rpms
@freethinkingamerican80

James Boerema I like the idea because it's a screamer and not your average v8 engine.

Ryan Nolan I'll definitely have closer to $5.5k by time I get the double beehive Springs and custom cam in there but that's exactly why I'm building the engine this way--everyone else doing LS builds loves the torque, but I'm happy to be doing something different and probably get a very unique sound out of it for the last 1.5k rpms
