Tech Tip Tuesday: A lot of folks have heard of Steam Vent Kits for LS engines, some use them, and many are not sure where to plumb the main return line to. We make a kit for a variety of intakes including high rises, plastic intakes, LSA / LS9 supechargers as well as a DIY kit.
We see many folks plumb the line right back to the waterpump. While that isn't going to blow anything up at idle, or on a street rod style build. For the more serious high horsepower builds we suggest differently. Simply plumbing the return line into the waterpump reintroduces water and steam and air back into the system thereby accomplishing a lot less than desirable.
Factory equipped LS cars plumb this line right below the radiator cap. The reason is, it allows the steam and pressure to build up in a place where the radiator cap can bleed it off under normal operation as intended. Radiator caps have built in spring rates and when pressure builds up they push a plunger up and excess fluid and air go out the "overflow port" which is machined into the cap receiver.
Bottom line, for best results weld a bung in right below the radiator cap as close to the top of the cap as possible, but do not use the overflow port.
Hope this helps, thanks for tuning in to another Tech Tip Tuesday! There is more to come!
