Do you use the stock driveshaft from your c10 with the new gen motor/trans? I’m picking up a junk yard LS/auto trans next week but am trying to figure out if the factory 85 shaft will fit with the new motor/trans. Or if I could just use the beefier 2003 driveshaft from the donor truck and it bolt my factory 85 year end after a cut/balance.

Badass vid bro, this was cool and it sounded awesome at the end, i bet wiring was the hardest part in this swap
@AGearHead4Life
10 жыл бұрын
Thank you spoogethat! The wiring isn't that bad, its just time consuming. I sat here and tried to think about what part was the hardest part and my conclusion was that I wouldn't call any of it real hard, just time consuming. But if I had to pick one part, I guess I would pick the wiring to be the hardest part because of how much time it takes.

Hey did you say in a previous video that you can flash the ecm for a ls1 and swap it without having to delete wires from the harness? If so could you explain this a little more, I couldn't find the video where you were talking about it. Thanks for all the videos that help me alot. I'm currently swaping a 5.3 into an 1965 buick wildcat.
@AGearHead4Life
10 жыл бұрын
Hey Kaylan! Yep, you don't ever have to delete any wires from the harness. That is only done to help it look better. I don't usually do that. I just give power to the harness and have the VATS (Vehicle Anti Theft) system turned off in the PCM. Then it'll run and drive. You use LT1swap.com for the wiring diagram of where to give the harness power and you can use "CoolMike222" on ebay to flash your PCM. Here is a video that shows exactly what I explained running on a stand. kzitem.info/news/bejne/t6Wd0ZWMh3mcdoo

Guy Taylor Thank you Guy! I usually use a Walbro 255 pump. This truck I used the '87 tank and sending unit, but with a high pressure fuel pump, like the walbro 255. Thanks GoodFellaAtxSS44! I haven't got an amount that I put into this swap, since I spent about a year hunting and collecting parts before the swap. I'll need to add it up one day though. Hey Mark, just a quick question: I'm helping a friend out on a project, and he's about to do a 5.3 with t56 trans in his car, and he plans to run a DIY standalone setup on the 5.3 with a stock ecu (obviously vats tuned out) but we were wondering what was up with the wiring for the t56. Looks like theres only a few wires that are needed, but I'm also reading you can delete a couple of those. What all is necessary to run a t56 wiring-wise? Also, you ETS yet? I got out last month and started school this week. Currently awaiting GI Bill money for LS stuffs lmao.

That should be the same length DS you need as long as you placed the engine in the same right position. One inch set back swap plates usually put it there or use Dirty Dingo adjustable mounts.

How does the bulkhead get connected to the harness for all your in car stuff like controls and gauges ?
@AGearHead4Life
5 жыл бұрын
quan nguyen There’s no controls that I can think of that you need to connect on the body harness (aka bulkhead connector). They’re be a couple that you use, like the large main ignition wire. Run that one to power the whole LS Engine harness. Wire for oil pressure will go to the oil pressure sending unit on the engine. Not much to it. If you’re attempting to make all of your gauges work, that is too long of a subject to be able to type here. That’s why I made the “LSx Swap Gauge” video.

Yes, just ran the wire from the gauge to the correct wire on the engine harness. Except for the speedo. I had to use a 91 Suburban speedo since its electronic.

Thanks Rey! And true, but I didn't always have someone there at the beginning and end of the day to help me take the hood off and on. The truck stayed in the driveway and since my last truck was stolen, I'm too paranoid to leave it outside with no hood.

rey0176 Yea, thats what I meant. I after unbolting it each day, I didnt always have someone there to help me move it and then replace it at the end of the day. I'm use to working alone. lol but luckily i did have quit a bit of help that weekend. Ah yea man, I think about security often too. If someone really wants something, they will find a way to get it. All we can do is make it harder for them to get it and hope they give up. We've got cameras and all that we can do. Plus I'm a light sleeper, Former Marine, weapons instructor and former martial arts instructor. They won't want me to wake. I do just about live in that driveway though. lol

AGearHead4Life I've been watching your videos of ls swaps for a while now and about 2 weeks ago I startef my first ls swap a l33 all aluminum 5.3 and my question is the original location of the ac compressor is just not gonna plug up cause it too close to the chassis is it possible to move it up like the old gen 2 small blocks?

Yep, anything is possible. I have pics of a '93 Raodmaster that we were able able to use the 93 compressor onto the LS motor when we swapped it. Here's a link to the pics: facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.714092898644341.1073741863.156687594384877&type=3

It wasn't hard at all. Just had to swap out the yoke and make sure the spacer was on the crank for the torque converter snout. For the PCM and wiring there are a few options out there. The crossmember had to go back about another inch too.

Does it have spark at the spark plug? Take a plug out of the head and ground it to the block or frame with the plug wire still connected. Crank the engine over to see if the plug sparks. If not, check your grounds on the back of the head and side of the block.

+Ben S. YEs I did. I used the good and strong 4l80e out of a 3/4 ton truck/van. That way I can beat the mess out of it and not have to worry about dropping it to fix it. :) You can find them for the same price as a 60e. They eat some power, but are very durable. Its basically the same as a th400 but with overdrive.

will the 4L60e work on the 5.3 and what would you have to do to make it work together since it works on a separate computer
@AGearHead4Life

You must be referring to the older style 60es. You could make it work. How I couldn't tell you. But I suggest using the newer style trans that comes with the LS. You can usually sell the older one for enough money to buy a newer trans.

mark question how would u wire in the alternator i have 65 impala i did my harness and have a blue wire from alternator i was going to use for amp gauge the connector plugged in to ecu and i used the + from my old alternator that leads to junction block and doesnt charge any ideas
@AGearHead4Life
7 жыл бұрын
I just let the PCM excite my alternator as it did from the factory. Sounds like your wire to the exciter terminal may not be getting power as it should. You'll need to test the terminals on the alternator to see if the right one is hot when it should be. If not, reference the wiring diagram to see where that wire should be and make sure that it's in place.
@AGearHead4Life
7 жыл бұрын
or you just have a bad alternator. lol Check the power on the alt plug first though. You can even jump power to the exciter terminal on the alt to make the alt charge, but it said to be bad to leave it that way. Something about not using 12v to excite the alt and only using ~5v, like the PCM gives it. So people who just run their own wire to excite the alt, will use a resistor on that power wire to lower it's voltage.

Julien Bernal Well I've found it hard to give tips through text. The only think I know is to find the wiring diagrams and study them. I havent swapped a Vortec 5.7, so I'm not familiar with it, but should be pretty close to the same as a LS swap. LT1swapDOTcom problaby has the diagrams for you. You'll probably need to get the VATS dissabled in the PCM too.

So no different oil pan needed ? I've got my 85 Silverado that my father gave me in 1988 ( yep still got it ) and now it's time to give it to my 14yr old . It's had 3 355 and had a 406 with dart heads for a long time . Now I'm going to go ls gen111 . Q: if we go carb would I still need the factory Ls harness etc
@AGearHead4Life
9 жыл бұрын
The stock pan will fit, but hangs way below the crossmember. I ran the factory truck pan on my last truck. In this video I used a Cadillac CTSV oil pan. It fit perfectly and above the crossmember. Sounds like a good father son project! Don't go carb... I don't know how to put it into words, beside "Don't go carb". People who do it because they think their simplifying it or saving money, always regret it. It cost more, about $600, to get the carb setup. Then you still have to tune the MSD ignntion part of it a little. Then you still have the fun of a chock and dirty carb issues. Fuel injection is so comfortable and dependable once its set up to your build. I use my remote start in these cold mornings on this truck so its nice and toasty on the way to work. Could do that with a carb. Its just much much nicer. I'd consider carb if it was a race purpose build maybe. that way its not as difficult to adjust the tune after every mod.

@AGearHead4Life

Thanks Ben! To flash these computers, you'll need software that can access and modify it. The most common one used is called HP Tuners. The software costs about $500 and then another $100 for each PCM that you access. This is why most people just pay a tuner ~$150 to do it for them.

@AGearHead4Life
10 жыл бұрын
the one in the c10 will not work. It is your option to use the LSx fuse block or to make your own. I usually use a universe 4 fuse block. Its easier to just use the original LS fuse block though. With wiring you'll have many things that are optional and your choice.

I don't believe that question can really be answered easily. What wasn't bad for me could be a nightmare for another person. I do have a video showing how easy it can be though. Search "LSx Swap Harness Simple". In my eyes, if you can install a car stereo, you can do the LS harness.
