I just got back from Nashville and went by the Gibson Garage. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve played a lot of amazing Gibsons (mostly SGs and Explorers) but I was pretty shocked at how many $3k+ instruments had paint issues, buffing compound present, and tool marks all over the fretboards. In their own showroom.
@ErickC
Жыл бұрын
My experience (your mileage may vary) is that the best Gibsons are the cheap ones, particularly the low-end faded ones made between 2005 and 2008. Beyond that? Fuck that shit; it's just diminishing returns. Get a Greco or an Orville instead if you want a "Gibson-style" instrument. I only paid more than $1k for a Gibson once, and that's because it was a 60's model that they don't make any more.

Well, it isn't that bad when you consider that the price includes a hardshell case. The Arrow doesn't come with a case, so the extra cost for a case would be $300. Technically, the Kirk Hammett V is only $100 more than the Arrow because the KH-V comes with a hardshell case. That accounts for $300 of the price increase right there. If the buyer doesn't need a hardshell case, then I can see that being a nonstarter, but as a gigging musician, a hardshell case is a must have. I'd say the KH-V is pretty good value especially since you get a tone knob on the KH version of it.

You should try and get your hands on one of the Dean Dave Mustaine signature VMNTs and compare that to the gibson.

$400 more for a nice case, lighter wood, locking tuners, plus the extra for an icon's signature/unique guitar. If I'm already spending $1,400, I might splurge for the KH sig.

Nice review! Looks like a cool guitar! You should get some guitar wall hangers. This and the Vicious V guitar would look great on your wall.

I really like death magnetic and i'm a old school fan, Load and reload are 60% good, there are some very good songs there, also, the new album is pretty good too, i guess i'm not the same cliche guy who wants master of puppets pt2...

Agreed. That Was Just Your Life, All Nightmare Long and My Apocalypse are pretty sick songs of DM and it’s easy for casual Met fans to disregard post Black Album material

The only thing that would make me hesitate on the ESP is ESP. After watching the drama that unfolded with Chondro Guitars (that KDH covered on his channel a couple days ago), I am a little hesitant to give my money to a company quick to cancel orders.

And just one more example of shitty corporate behavior. But go ahead and pretend that you wouldn't be miffed if you had a sizeable deposit on a guitar, had already been waiting at least months for the guitar, to have reassurance that orders placed would be fulfilled, only to have ESP reverse course and then play PR acrobatics to keep the situation under control. You might give them a pass, I won't. Besides, as a bassist, ESP has nothing I would spend my money on.

I can honestly say I’ve been appreciating the last 3 Metallica albums lately. I loved Death Magnetic off the bat (minus the god awful mastering job). But Hardwired took me some time. Once I listened to it with headphone I started getting into it much more. Same with the new one. I know we all want our favorite bands to keep doing the stuff we fell in love with them for but that’s not how artists operate. You have to try new things and new sounds or else you just get stuck in a rut. That’s my opinion of course and I’ll always love the classic 3 albums that changed my life. I still listen to the Master of Puppets and shake my head in awe at the genius on display. All that being said I’ll take the Arrow over the sig version in a heartbeat. The paint looks better and the extra $400 is all about the name. Thanks Glenn! 🤘

I play both an ESP LTD EC-1000 with EMGs, and a PRS Custom with Fishman Fluence pickups. The difference that I notice is just that the Fishmans seem to have a nice response for more melodic parts and soloing. The EMGs seem to be a little better for keeping definition between chords when playing fast, palm-muted, bar chords (in drop C). I really like them both a lot, it just depends on what I'm doing in a particular song.

I can!! We have, Unforgiven 3, Broken Beat and Scarred, All Nightmare Long, Cyanide, Suicide and Redemption. For the follow up album: Hardwired, Hardwired, Atlas Rise, Now That We're Dead, Mother Into Flames, Halo on Fire, Spit on the Bone, Man-Unkind. Do I continue? Oh the hidden gem that everyone hated and then loved, All Within My Hands S&M2 version.

The Kirk Hammett V is on sale for $899 at Guitar Center through May. Just picked up the gold model this week. With trade in, I paid $490 out the door.

Few things to mention that may clear up a few things for Glenn: 1) The guitar string height may have been set up closer to Hammett's preferred height. Hammett has mentioned on numerous occasions that he prefers a very high string height as he wants to feel his guitar "fighting back". I don't personally understand that, but that may be why the string height was an issue for you here. 2) The increased cost may be a product of part of all sales of the newer released guitars goes towards their All Within My Hands foundation. Not only do they donate a huge portion of their show's revenue to this foundation, but now all guitars sold has a couple hundred bucks go towards it. So if you buy these guitars, know that yes it's a higher cost these days, but you're also giving back to help get more kids into all of the arts, but primarily music. I own almost all of Hetfield's collection including the limited release purple baritone Snakebyte. I want his new camo one, but the increase in cost compared to previous generations does give me pause. Going from $1299 to $1899 seems like a fairly steep jump to me. 3) Outside of the mastering of Death Magnetic, which I admit is problematic, that album has some very strong songs particularly if you're playing them on guitar. My drummer and I absolutely love playing All Nightmare Long, Judas Kiss, and My Apocalypse.

i feel like the big issue with metallica, st. anger to present, is just how LOOONNNGGG the songs are without that same justification of the older songs have. they hit a groove that they like and don't quit playing it. it gets boring after awhile.

I want to love it, but UGH those finishes... Just a default black/white option would look killer. I know it would be similar to a Jackson Rhoads V, but I prefer ESP's V shape.

The extra $400 is hardly about the wood, or whatever. It's definitely about covering royalty expenses. Most signature products are slightly pricier than their standard counterparts because the artist makes a cut out of each sale. I would like to verify if there's a difference in tone for different woods in acoustic instruments. I suspect there might be a difference in resonance and sustain, depending on the density of the wood, provided the construction method is the same. That would be an awesome experiment!

You know, I don’t think I am familiar with one song on LULU, I only listened to it once and the cds spent the rest of their time in the back of my car window getting a suntan. Even though Load and Reload were not what you would consider metal albums , I still enjoy them because they are terrific rock albums I have thoroughly enjoyed. St.Anger was better when another band made it and took out the poor drum sound. Death magnetic still wasn’t bad, and you forgot to mention there new album 72 seasons which in my opinion is was frikken awesome. Kirks ltd V is awesome but the sparkle look is a little tootie fruity. Thanks for the awesome review!

I think the Arrow had a little more low end and wasn't quite as bright as the Hammett but the variance was negligible. Maybe you should do a signal comparison. Edit: According to ESP's website, the Bone Breakers are essentially a pair of 81s. The Arrow had an 81 & 85 so the variance I thought I heard is coming from the 85 pickup
