My favorite part of one of these episodes was with Cotton. Honestly, my favorite scene is when Hank visits her at her new home and she's working on the PH balance on the swimming pool. She and Hank share a beer and she tells him, "Don't worry Uncle Hank, you taught me how to fish." I think the back and forth development of Luanne isn't just the writers being unsure of what direction to push her in. I think it accurately portrays the traits that can come from being in a family of convicts and addicts, and not receiving the support that one needs. Luanne grows, but when her dad comes back, she essentially relapses into the nativity of childhood, where even if you see your parents doing wrong, you don't want to accept that this is the way they are, and they might never change. We see her grow and relapse, rinse and repeat, and I think thats one of the most accurate parts of KOTH.

My issue with that episode isn’t necessarily the idea of Luanne regressing because of something from her past coming back, Leanne’s Saga did something similar. Whereas Luanne's Christianity is there to show the audience, that despite her bad start in life, she has a fighting chance to break the cycle of destructive traits her biological parents instilled in her. It was Peggy's own ego in later seasons that pushed her to baby her niece; she couldn't let Luanne make her own choices, even if it meant constantly putting her down. Luanne getting dumber served to justify Peggy's attitude, apparently. 🙄

It's so weird that this video made me realize that I love her so much because she's exactly like my late sister 😭 I mean, literally down to the passion for cosmetology. She was a bright little ball of light that could be so ridiculously simple sometimes, but was also one of the most resilient and adaptable people I've ever met. People say that living is more important than surviving and that woman was the biggest bit of life in my life, I just wish she had survived too.

I still remember the episode where Buckley's ghost visits LuAnne. I caught it late at night on Cartoon Network, and was in the middle of a bad depressive episode stemming from the loss of a good friend of mine in a car accident a couple months prior. I was feeling so lost and utterly alone-- my emotionally abusive mother had gotten mad at me for still being in mourning of my friend because "I had only known him for two and a half months, and I should have 'gotten over it by now' because it wasn't like I had known him for ten years or anything, so I was being ridiculous for still grieving," so I felt like I had no one to turn to. That episode, while it frames the story as LuAnne needing to figure things out on her own instead of waiting for someone to give her the answers (ie "a sign" through Divine Intervention), the message I took from the episode, that I needed during that time in my life, was that even though a loved one is physically gone, they still exist in the space around us (the memories, the music, the places, etc) and it helped me to think that my friend was still looking out for me and that I wasn't truly as alone as I felt.

I don't treat life: a losers manual as canon. It ignores the years of development of Luannes dad, before this episode they never said Hoyt was in prison, he was always working on an oil rig. I also wish we could've got more development on Luannes ability as a mechanic

That whole episode contradicted everything about Luanne and her father, he was said to look like a male Peggy and was a weak cowardly man, Luanne last saw him in person in the first episode off screen as she witnessed the fight between them and her mother got arrested, after the trial he fled to the oil rig and said he wouldn’t come back until he was faxed his wife’s death certificate, and Hank mentioned enjoying his company, but in “Life A Loser’s Manuel” everything is completely contradictory he is a bit fat guy who looks nothing like Peggy, Luanne last saw him when she was a little girl, Hank never met him, and he was in jail for being a thief and drug addict.

As far as the midseason Luanne goes, I feel like it is the most realistic portrayal of someone caught between childhood and adulthood . we don't all apways progress in a straight line, its easy to slide back into co-dependant habits when things get tough for someone who has been ... "overly cared for" most of their life and so Luanne going from self-sufficient one week, to just handing off her responsibilities the next week is pretty spot on ... ... ... I STILL have trouble with falling into those kind of situations because I have a very willingly helpful family that will make things too easy on me somtimes

There are so many times were luanne is discouraged by the adults in her life and noone ever noticed her obvious abilities, not even the fans. Luanne had no direction and couldn't decide what to do w her life but on second watch its pretty clear she's a gifted mechanic and loves the work. Anyone ever noticed how many times we see luanne easily fix a car the guys couldn't fix? And she likes it too.

I do think the later seasons did kinda ruin Luanne a bit by making her this stereotypical dumb blonde woman child, but they still hit the mark Luanne's growth at certain points. Man...Brittany Murphy was such a great actress and voice actor, it is sad she passed away too soon. If King of the Hill was ever to get a more modern revival or reboot of sorts, I don't think anyone can voice Luanne the same way to Murphy did, so better to leave out Luanne in the show to preserve her character.

So I thought of something, when you said it felt like the writers were struggling with figuring out what to do with Luanne, I feel like somehow they could've done stories where Luanne continues moving forward in her life, growing into an independent and intelligent woman while never losing her naivety and kindhearted/generosity because she'll always be a little ditzy and extremely nice but when push comes to shove or in certain situations she can be tough and resilient such as when she has to deal with Cotton spanking/hitting her in the butt and treating her like a maid in a lot of the early episodes. Surely they could've figured out ways to balance out her generous/kindness with her independence and maturity. I mean even Hank, who is seen as the most level headed and sensible guy in the whole show had moments where he was naive to somethings (like the episode where he took a hit off a joint thinking it was some kind of cigarette).

I love how she goes from just being eye candy to the audience for them to catcall to being genuinely respected and cheered on by them when she decides to fight back instead of taking the dive.

Granted, I can make one argument for why Luanne was never told about her father's shortcomings/failures: Hank would essentially become a permanent father figure to her (something that I imagine wouldn't go over well in the Hill household, so she has to have someone else to look up to) and it would possibly give her an out to fall back down a rabbit hole because she might, given her ignorance, believe her failure to be genetic if both her mom and dad are outed as bad people. This is a weaker argument given that Lucky is an anchor in her life at this point, but still. Those are my reasons.

I didn't really get it until I saw Ramen Girl. That movie was impressive in that its completely off-kilter premise would seem like it wouldn't work. But Brittany masterfully pulled it off. And I have to also give a lot of cool points to Brittany for doing what she could with the scripts they put in front of her for King Of The Hill. A lot of actors would get pissed at poor character arc. But not her. She just plugged away.

Luanne was a sweetheart and tried hard to rise above her parental environment. The only thing that always bothered me about her is that she was bone-rattlingly ignorant, and really didn't seem to try to do much about that. But I give her credit for making something of her life even though she was raised in a pretty hopeless situation. She had a lot of inner strength.
