The most amazing thing about the brothers is that they had no real formal training, the younger one and their sister were taught by the older brother and he learned by merely studying and practicing on his own by watching tap dancers. Their father worked at a factory at the time and the brother would accompany him, there was a tap dance studio across the street and he would watch the dancers and practice while his dad worked his shift.

I feel like a lot of pop artists have been cleaned up by the time they get to radio. There are a few that really are great, a recent one I heard who sang a portion of a song during an interview was Mike Posner. There are a number of honest singers out there, they rise to the top like cream. And there are the others whose musical talent is lacking, so then their work is cleaned up hard by the producers before releasing the tracks.

@@lynettepalecek3141 Excuse me? I am talking about the majority of the people from childhood to adults dressing up besides for church. Everyone would dress up in semi-dress clothes, every day after dinner. Men and boys would wear white shirts and dress trousers, women and girls would wear nice casual dresses then they would sit on the porch, go for walks, or go visiting. Everyone dresses for church, that is a given. Back in the day everyone would be dressed whenever they went shopping, to the doctors, or even down to the bank. I seen a lot of home movies and photos from my great grandparents showing how it was back in their day. Now a days the majority of the people dress like bums.. The Nicholas Brothers (Fayard 1914-2006 and Harold 1921-2000) taught master classes in tap dance as teachers-in-residence at Harvard University and Radcliffe at Ruth Page Visiting Artists. Among their known students are Debbie Allen, Janet Jackson, and Michael Jackson. Several of today's master tap dancers have performed with or been taught by the brothers: Dianne Walker, Sam Weber, Lane Alexander, Mark Mendonca, Terry Brock, Colburn Kids Tap/L.A, Channing Cook Holmes, Chris Baker, Artis Brienzo, Chester Whitmore, Darlene Gist, Chris Scott, Tobius Tak, Carol Zee, and Steve Zee. In 1991, the Nicholas Brothers received Kennedy Center Honors in recognition of their six decades of achievements. Two of Fayard's granddaughters dance as the "Nicholas Sisters" and have won awards for their performances.

I can't believe what I'm watching. I had no idea there was footage of the Nicholas brothers when they were this young. This clip is the epitome of their tapping brilliance. For me, this is the great height of their dancing. All the leaps and splits of later times - especially the splits - was a diversion away from their raw great, pure dancing. The pounding to the floor splits was painful to watch and very injurious to the body. In this clip they are everything a dancer should be and a dance should be. Sheer, intricate, dazzling dance. Nothing else. Unfettered, un-gimmicky dancing. The dancing surpasses Fred Astairie's tapping technique by far and also even way greater than Michael Jackson, although it's not an exact comparison because it's two different dance styles. I always knew the Nicholas brothers were great. But this even exceeded how great I knew they were. The choreography is splendid. And their synchronization is superb, and impeccable - almost like they are being magnetized by the stars above.
