I Love the contrast between the two tracks, you have no Idea how this tracks impact on the gameplay. Basically the first track is when Ludwig is completely Lost in his beast form (all he does is scream like a damn horse and hits you with his deformed legs and arms), this changes in the middle of the fight, when Ludwig regain his conscience for a bit and wields his holy moonlight blade. At this point the second track starts playing and the dance begins, not between you and Ludwig, but between him and his sword. Its a really powerfull moment (since Ludwig is referenced throughout the hole game) and those tracks suit the fight so well man.

I love it because the first part is so eerie an horrific, and the second part sounds such a combination of sad and triumphant. He looks so grotesque, the worst afflicted beast so far, a seemingly tragic fall from grace for one of the only true heroes in the game, but then Ludwig does what no one else has ever succeeded in doing, mentally recovering from the Beast Plague, and stands up and wields his legendary sword for one last epic fight. It's amazing.

Comparing to a mad walts is so accurate, because it fits perfectly the fight. At the beginning, Ludwig is bestial, you can see the undertone of the waltz and nobility but it's hectic, you can sense it all the time that something is wrong. Then BOOM, that transition hits and now you face the noble hunter Ludwig the Holy Blade of the Church, his moves become coordinated and rhythmic, forcing you to "dance" to the Holy Blade's waltz of death if you want to prevail. Edit: and it's amazing your analysis nailed aspects of the fight just from the OST, that is the mark of a really good and memorable soundtrack.

The majority of Bloodborne tracks are incredible. The tracks with lyrics, which are in Latin but there's some translations available, essentially tell the story of the boss you're fighting. Once you have the gist of their story, it makes the song (and fight) that much better. I regards to The Accursed and The Holy Blade parts of this, the first half of the fight is against a corrupted beast version of Ludwig. The ominous tones help signify that. The Holy Blade is him regaining his sanity, and the battle becomes and epic struggle between two hunters.

No idea why a horse, I guess the symbolism is that he used to be a guiding companion for the church hunters, and horses are companions for us and they help guide our paths sometimes. Otherwise? The transition of the accursed theme to the holy blade theme, I think is one of, if not the best symbolic and cinematic moments in the souls series; the scene where he spies the blade both the cello subsides and the choir intermission begins, marking the moment of clarity and respite the blade gives ludwig from his blood-drunk madness, as well as marking that the power of the "guiding moonlight" is equally intoxicating as beasthood, this transition parallels the long running theme in Bloodborne of the precipice humanity dwells on, liable to succumb not only to the temptations of the bliss and ignorance in regressing to beasthood, but the frenzied pursuit of insight and transcendence

I am so glad I stumbled across this breakdown! You've earned yourself a subscription, sir! Your breakdown hits upon a few key notes of the piece's implementation in the fight itself...the introductory phase absolutely plays tempo headgames with you to mirror the unpredictability of the boss as he is still ruled by the madness of beasthood (at this point, his health bar denotes him as Ludwig the Accursed) After the mid-fight point, where the choir solo marks the transition into fighting Ludwig as the Holy Blade (his in-game name changes here as well), he regains the dignity, honor, and sanity of a Holy Swordsman, and combats you with his senses in tact. I love that you described it as more sober, because that perfectly describes the transition of the battle into an elegant waltz by both participants. This is my favorite From Software track of all time because of how it almost single-handedly controls the change in ambience....you picked up on the the nature of the shift with presumably no gameplay or knowledge of the fight, just the music alone. It's such an effective piece. If you have even a passing interest in video games, consider watching a video of the encounter and see how your observations play up with the visuals of the battle

"Sounds like a Mad waltz/Waltz of Death" That's essentially what it is. A dance between a hunter and a mad Old Hunter.

I like this song because it sounds like someone of high standing, gets slowly descended into madness. And then at the end it’s like the whole host of events are also mad

This is just straight up the best song in the game. This + the atmosphere of the boss arena + Ludwig revealing the Holy Moonlight Greatsword has to be one of the greatest moments in gaming bruh

"sounds like a mad waltz" I mean if that's what you call front rolling out of the way of Ludwig's sword and his mangled donkey kicking horse body then yes a waltz indeed.

Honestly, you could probably make an hour long video on the entirety of the Bloodborne soundtrack. It's incredible and each song fits its designated boss perfectly. What makes the soundtracks so intense in-game is not just that the fights are pretty tough and fast paced, but also the lack of music during the level. Outside of a boss fight, there's no music, except for in one place called Yahar'gul. Also, there is a "Behind the Scenes" version of the Cleric Beast theme (which plays during two boss fights) where you can see the chapel the orchestra played the soundtrack in. It's awesome!

I don't know about anyone else, but the feeling I get listening to this track describes the character of Ludwig perfectly. As it starts you feel the tension and the horror, and once it ramps up it becomes something simultaneously horrifying and fantastic, a monster but also someone who was once great.

I hope you watched the gameplay of this boss battle my friend because it will definitely give you insight into why the track was split into two parts. In the start of the battle, Ludwig is a beast charging at the player without thought. Then in the second half, he regains a bit of his humanity as he gazes upon the holy blade! It's awesome! Good take btw. You knew it was a boss battle.

"Waltz of Death" is an excellent summary of the boss fight, especially its second half, when Ludwig regains his faculties and becomes more reliant on crisp movements rather than mad swipes and rushes. Overall an amazing boss fight, whose music fits the tone very well. Thank you for listening to it with the open minded approach you seem to approach all of your reviews that i have seen so far. I think you would enjoy the Lady Maria track as well.

“It builds up the tension, then releases it, then builds it right back up” Me, thinking of barely catching s breath between dodging crushing dive bombs and bull charges: ...sounds about right. I love how just from listening to and describing the music, whether intentionally or not, you’re perfectly describing the feel of the actual fight it plays for; both a sign of how well the track fits its purpose and how much you understand it from just a first listen.
