Beethoven's Sonata No 5 in F Major, the so-called "Spring" Sonata, has long been considered one of the composer's favorite and most popular works. Complete beauty and elegance, a cheerful character combined with "classical" clarity and simplicity of musical images - this is what characterizes this sonata. It is difficult to say anything definite about the origin of the sonata's name - "Spring". It is known that Beethoven only rarely and reluctantly allowed attempts to concretize in words the content of his music. Being unshakably confident in the concreteness and imagery of his work as a whole and of each large and small work separately, Beethoven considered it unnecessary to give them "nicknames". For all the imagery of the music, however, the "Spring" Sonata is alien to naturalistic sound imitation. Beethoven resorted to this technique only on rare occasions, to create special artistic effects. "More an expression of feeling than painting," the composer wrote on the program handed out at the first performance of the Sixth Symphony. These words could have been said about the Fifth Sonata as well.
