In defense of Yassop, I seriously doubt Ussop's mom was already sick and dying when he left them. Also, it feels like Ussop's mom knew what she was getting into when she married him. He comes across like a really free spirited guy who couldn't be tied down by anything. So I think it's one of those situations where she's like "Yeah, I would prefer it if he stayed here and supported us, but if he did, he wouldn't be the man I married". It's like the kind of love you have for another person where you support them even at your own detriment. It definitely wasn't good for her, but she loved him so much she didn't care. It's honestly kinda toxic, but she was happy and proud of Yassop and so was Ussop because they loved him for him, even if that was a negative for their own well being. I still think he was an a-hole in the long run, but it really comes across like Ussop's mom signed up for that. Also, how much you like this arc is heavily dependent on how quickly you take a liking to Usopp, as he is the main emotional tie to this story. And a lot of people take a significant amount of time to warm up to him. And by "a significant amount of time", I mean it can be upwards of 200 episodes before some people start to like him. He's a fairly divisive character early on, and this arcs dependence on his emotional arc is a major reason why this arc contributes to a lot of people dropping the series.

Yes, Usopp is a much more fully formed character in the anime... I understand the live action had its limitations but Usopp's writing there is a shadow of what it is here. Syrup Village is also one of my favorite arcs so I'm happy to see you enjoyed it!

17:07 when people say "this arc is one of the worst" they don't mean that it's bad, it's just that the other arcs are so much better. This one is still really good!

The more I think about it, in the anime Usopp doesn't really lie to make himself look good from what I can think of. With Kaya he lied to cheer her up rather than make himself sound awesome. When Usopp is scared he lies to try and intimidate foes (like saying he has hundreds or thousands of subordinates).

The villagers liking it, makes the world alive in some way. The LA has some World Building for S2, but it missed on micro world stuff with a tighter pace.

Afaik the reason why sailing (war)ships usually didn't have cannon in the bow was that cannons were highly inaccurate, so you needed a lot of them to compensate for it, rendering forward cannons mostly useless (or worse, since they'd take space and added weigth). However, when cannons started to become more precise, sailing (war)ships were build with a few forward facing cannons so they could slow down any ship that was trying to get away.

There's this Exclusive thing of Manga called "Cover Stories", a single page of story, before each chapter, with a singular panel and a short text explaining whats happening. It covers multiple character stories throughout, and Jango gets his own Cover Story with the starting point being waking up, after getting beaten up here. Oda uses Cover stories effectively to Fill-in how a character ends up in certain positions in the story.

You gotta understand having a relationship with a sailor, they have to go to sea. If you know that from the beginning of the relationship it's understood they are getting on that boat at some point. Navy life.

Syrup villiage is a really good arc and I don't get why people have a problem with it. There are a few minor cracks but that's to be expected as this was Oda's first attempt at a bigger arc but all the major beats of them are developed here and then just get refined as the series goes on.

I feel like a lot of people don't get hooked on One Piece until the Arlong Park arc, so the best is yet to come!

That's usualy what I tell newcomers to decide on if One Piece is working for them and why it was so important that the live action series nail it. Arlong is the point where everything really comes together and Oda's writing takes off running so if your seriously invested in what's going on there then your loving One Piece.

Heard a funny thing recently, how Merry had a ship made with his figurehead and he was secretly a pirate as well, Kaya had two pirates acting as her Butlers.

the Live Action did expand a lot of the fluff on the sides "better", what do the villagers do, how come Kaya has a fortune and so on. But a lot of the character work fell really flat through that, for me at least. Since I am not consuming any Horror media, that whole aspect kinda went over my head in the live action and I thought of it more being a CW teen dramedy with some spice here and there, trying to at least establish Usopp somewhat and shoving in Zoros backstory before episode 5. While the live-action version is shorter, I felt it dragged as much as this can drag at times, the anime anyways. and I am not saying the manga or anime arc is perfect. I simply enjoy the character work much more than what the LA did with it.

Kent Williams is the voice of Kuro. It will be difficult to do The Out of the Back attack in the live action and I think Kuro has to be outside to do it. Way more room than inside. Merry is still alive in this one. Did the villagers forget what happened yesterday?

Usopp’s mom died of what’s commonly known as “Love Sickness.” She missed her Love so much that it made her sick but still loved him for who he was and never saw anything that he did as bad. It’s tragically beautiful
