Lukashenko: We support agriculture [agricultural enterprises] because they take care of the villages. As for the social sphere, people, pensioners mostly, they are our responsibility, the responsibility of the state. Since they [agricultural enterprises] take care of the things for us, we have to support them. It is what state support for agriculture is all about. The way I see it. Unless we hand over villages to the rural councils. But what does a rural council have? An office, a table, and a pen. And it won’t do anything.
Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko explained why state-run agricultural enterprises enjoy support in the country. They perform additional social functions. It is the key. The head of state mentioned it as he visited OAO Tikhinichi in Rogachev District on 13 August (subtitles in English).
