It didn't used to be, that white artists would acknowledge the black influences on their music. Not American ones anyway. The British would be more forthcoming that way. So, it's a sign of progress that Tracy Chapman's great song, is realizing a new popularity in a different genre of music. However it happens to make such magic between artists, it's only right and wonderful that this happens to the best of them.

Okay--not being snotty here. I am going to explain this. Song of the year is an award for the WRITING of a song. Single of the year is an award for the PERFORMANCE of a song. Very few country artists write their own material. This is not a criticism by the way. MOST country singles are "remakes" of sorts.

I must be the only one who isn't on the Luke Combs Fast Car Hype! I personally feel its in NO WAY genuine. He did not even change the lyrics. So when I hear a song, I want to believe the pain and struggle. How can I believe it when he sings about being a working as a checkout girl, and driving with an arm around my shoulder. Not too many girls ride with an arm around their dude's shoulder while they're going 90! The lyrics needed to be altered to be more from a guys prospective, maybe then it just wouldn't a song that was redone cause he liked it.
@arielsclamshellbra

Altering it would be wrong. It doesn't have to be about him. The song needs no alterations. He respected Tracy enough to do it right. It's a cover, of course it isn't about him, use your brain.

Despite the way it feels right now Luke and Tracy represent what makes our country amazing. We are the only culture where something like this can happen. I really respect Luke for honoring her work and not even changing the lyrics. I grew up in the 70s looking like Tracy. With a grandfather that looked like Luke. We’d drive in his giant Caddy listening to Hank Williams and Haggard and Willie. I’ll never forget that long ocean drive, the moon resting on the ocean as I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry played over and over. We didn’t say anything. Just listened. Each time the song ended one of us would rewind (old tech) and it would play again.

Not a fan of modern country. Reason why is not important. But I had no idea this song had been covered by a country artist. And frankly had I just stumbled upon it on the radio I probably would have turned my nose up at it. But the first I heard about it was seeing that Tracy Chapman won a CMA which I immediately thought I would have to check snopes to disprove. But it was true. And NOT ONLY THAT, Combs did a VERY GOOD cover. with proper respect to Chapman. More importantly Combs & Chapman gave this very very polarized world a fantastic example. Combs' and Chapman's audiences come from very very different worlds (not better, not worse, different) and they all just found commonality in this song. Maybe some pre-conceived ideas of both audiences just got loosened?
