Dicky Herlambang It’s about a lad who’s out in the town of Belfast, a meets a pretty young maid (who has a black velvet band). He gets charmed and they walk for a bit before she nicks a pocketwatch from a passing gentleman and gives it to the lad. Next he’s in court for the theft of the pocketwatch, and ends up being sent to Australia on a prison ship. Sometimes, the young maid gets sent as well. The end of the song tells the moral: don’t get too taken by those young maids, beware before they get you drunk and doing stupid things. It’s more of a light warning or a fun tale then a sad song. Does that all make sense?
