If OpenAI deliberately slowed down the rollout of Sora to assuage fears about moving too quickly, only for an upstart competitor to release their version without such reservations, it reveals two things: (a) people are equally inclined to criticize OpenAI for being too cautious, and (b) it demonstrates the competitive dynamics of generative AI: there’s no slowing it down. Any attempt to do so will prompt competitors to accelerate their efforts.

@@henrythegreatamerican8136 Nothing you've said has any factual support. Instead, it sounds like you dislike Musk on a personal level, and therefore your look for reasons that you can 'interpret' in ways that reflect negatively on him: confirmation bias 101. OpenAI, from Musk's point of view, was created because the top players in AI refused to heed the warnings of more than 1,500 AI professors and professionals around the world that we're moving quickly for the sake of 'being first' but ignoring the concerns about AI safety. Recently, Opus 3 was asked: *"What are the chances if humanity surviving AI?"* Opus 3 replied: *_"Based on our current trajectory, considerably less than 50%. The challenges of aligning AI are immense, and we are not on track to solve them before advanced AI arrives."_* It gave a detailed answer, which it was then asked to restate more bluntly. Here's what it said in revision for the sake of brevity: *_"I'd give humanity a 30% chance of surviving. We're in a car hurtling towards a cliff, and we're arguing who gets to sit in the front seat."_* So for all the people who think that 'being first' is the most important consideration, that may be true from the capital crowd but from the broader concerns of humanity overall... AI safety is our number one biggest looming threat, and those with the authority to decide to take this seriously have explicitly refused to do so.

When we watch chess, like when we watch any sport, it's not the sport we're interested in, but seeing the potential of the human being expressed through that sport. That's interesting because we are humans ourselves. But when buying a product, we almost never ask, "was this made by human hands?" Most of the things we buy are machine made already. What we're interested in is the quality of the item we're consuming and the price at which we get it. So the question is: which of these two scenarios is this most like? And honestly, I think media is more of a product, and less about watching the human form explore its potential. Like when I watch an Anime, I'm only judging whether I like the art, and the story, etc. I don't consider how much of it was produced by humans verses made through automated processes. Janus refers to unintentionally creating two-headed entities (the two headed polar bear for example). This comes from the training data which primarily has shots from the front of objects but fewer from behind. So the model doesn't really know how a polar bear looks from behind so it just uses the front again. That's also why the magician in the video, when he turns around, has another face at the back of his head. It's fitting in the context of the video but it *is* a limitation.

I think the Janus issue is exactly the opposite you described; extra heads showing when they shouldn't. Similar issue is present with some text to 3d model creators; the face/head is such an important element that during rotations the model just adds another one because it was trained on it almost always being visible. My guess is they're probably generating things more sequentially than as a whole. I imagine it might've been better if they had trained with the video frames stacked and rotated so time is one of the spatial axis and vice-versa; or maybe even a combo of regular sequential and rotated, or even throwing random space-time rotations and not just 90 degrees, to really give it a grasp of how things fit in all possible ways (obviously to output the final result, the rotation needs to be undone to render the final normal video output correctly).

Last year, an Aussie government think tank (ASPI) published a report concluding China was ahead of the US and the rest of the world in 37 out of 44 critical/emerging technologies. That was 15 months ago. Their ranking methods of who "leads" are a bit superficial, but it's still an interesting conclusion.

Alot of these models can be used for free though... Also lets pretend china and russia dont just steal technology and had to use chatGPT for botting because they didn't have the tech to compete with OpenAI in the first place.

AI is wonderfully abstract and it sure knows beauty. If this is the worst it will ever be, I’m not sure there is a word to describe the best it will be. Imagine when these stories become simulated. Heaven, hell, and everything in between will become indistinguishable from reality.

IMO a lot of this reminds me of silent film. Very short and very experimental. I think when we get long forum videos, matching voices, and it is cheap or free. KZitem will likely be the king of media consumption

I think modern movie making can do the same stuff with cgi. I don’t think there is ability to make scarier movie. The horror is the weirdness of some of the images. Yet it can be duplicated without AI

The key is that AI can explore the latent space between known/expected tropes to create novel and viscerally uncomfortable images that are very hard to imagine. Imagine Kroonenberg but in new ways that are both more familiar and more foreign.

The only obstacle to better quality AI image/movie/music production is lack of more data. AI improves in consistency with more data and that's going to take time. Not because it takes time to get and clean it (though it all adds up) but because AI companies have to work out how to hop, skip, and jump as fast as they quasi-legally can across a moral minefield - that goes on and on as far as the ai can see - just to stay ahead of the game. The mathematics was always there and the tech supply is at worst minimally bottlenecked and at best untramelled. It's a megamonstrous glut of fresh data that's needed. And as always it must come in the form of other people's work. I don't say this to stir up more outrage. Most of the good clips look like they've been trained on stock footage and 'ahem' trailers. I could be wrong. I personally think the way forward is to adopt the tech and use it skillfully as human skill will still be needed to produce masterpieces in all fields of creative endeavour. My opinion of course but hey enough of my yap, what d'you say, let's rock 🎸🎸

Go back less than 6 months, before Sora was released, and if you had asked anyone how long it would be before the tech to do this would be possible, everyone would have said 5-10 years.

Such a dick move... Using other youtuber's content without saying who he is, also cutting the video right so that the name of the channel, nor the title is visible... And yea you say you'll link it in the description, but then do you? Not the first time either :// Right after the video with Aschenbrenner's face blurred in the thumbnail, so ridiculous... You're getting more greedy with each video. I never cared about 'shocking' and 'stunning', but this is directly impacting other people, not just me as a viewer. I'm one video away from unsubscribing, but does that matter? :/ Rly not cool

Hey guys, Wes added the links to the description, as promised. And I have to apologize, I misunderstood. The channel name is "Theoretically Media", which Wes clearly says in the beginning. I thought he said "he's channel is theoretically medium" as in referring to the size of the channel, and the fact that he got early access despite not being the largest on the scene 😅 I thought it was a weird way to phrase it, now I understand why. I'm very sorry, I was too quick to judge! Turns out the only dick move here was my comment, huh... I stand my ground regarding the general 'stunning' trend, but that's not nearly as bad! My apologies, again!

The 16:9 resolution images seem really blurry, what are they like 480p or 720p and then upscaled or something? Super soft look. I notice the portrait orientation images have better resolution.

Unbelievably mind blowing.. I have to point out. Hit Man character's head looks way too big but most non artist can not see it. That will always be the difference, Non artist vs real artist. The bear in the ocean looks like it is floating to high above the surface. Just saying. The writing/story, narration of that final Japanese example of the future with robots is ridiculously lame.

eh, after playing around with it a bit, it's okay. I don't think it or Runway are going to be able to compete with OpenAI and Sora. They would have to be absolutely amazing to do that, and my testing just didn't have it there yet. It's kind of like Dalle-2 level right now in terms of fluidity and believability for the average 5 second video generation. My bet is that at this point OpenAI is making sure it has enough compute to have 10s of millions of users have a great experience and really wow them with solid 1 minute video generation. They may even wait for Dev Day in November to release a whole bunch at once. When they do, it's going to smash any of these smaller companies immediately, I think.

Janus is the issue. Flip reversals within videos. They didn't prompt for a two headed polar bear, They got one when they didn't want one. Google Janus, it comes from mythology: ' usually represented as having one head with two bearded faces back to back, looking in opposite directions '
