Hey Marlene! Thanks for the excellent videos you make. My “perfect” camera would be a Lumix GM5, but they’re selling for over $1000 used and I can’t find any in Canada. That’s led me to become interested in the G100. I know the colours on the GM1 and GM5 are spectacular, especially for natural skin tones and I’ve heard that the newer Lumix colours have never been as good since then. It would be really helpful if you made a video comparing the GM1, GM5 and G100 (especially photography with your Leica lens) as I can’t find a good comparison anywhere. Thanks a lot! :)

Merry Christmas! Such a good review! I agree with you Marlene with the G100. As a daily GM5 user, I can say that the G100 is a good choice for somebody who missed on the GM series. The features are jam packed in such a tiny body. There is a grip and there is a taper where the middle finger can rest easily. I think it's mandatory for such a small body. The lack of the mechanical IBIS doesn't bother me much because my GM5 doesn't have it and with the 25mm F/1.7, I have learned how to manually stabilise my shots handheld, especially at night, which I enjoy shooting at, just like what they do in the old days. I think it's better to learn stabilising skills manually and handheld than to just rely on technology all the time. I am just happy Panasonic released another small-body well-performing camera and in 2020! Cheers!

Exactly, Eldo. Coming from the Lumix GM5, this camera is a dream. And I am also happy that Panasonic decided to make another small M43 camera. I love it with my 15mm f1.7 for similar reasons that you like your 25mm. Even something simple like shooting video, the GM5 has this pregnant pause after pressing the shutter button before actually stopping the video, and it also ends up clipping the last 1-2 seconds off the tail end of your clip. The G100 is super responsive that way and it stops and starts immediately. Thanks for chiming in. So many people just crap on cameras and repeat what one person says, without actually testing them out for themselves. Happy New Year! Cheers.

@@ImageMaven Thanks for replying! It's great to know about the responsiveness of the G100 vs the GM5. Nowadays, photography is 99% about the gear driven by gearheads and the other 1% is by the actual photographers. People rarely talk about techniques, composition, light, workflow, etc. I get many ideas about techniques from your channel that's why I have subscribed. Hey Marlene, the issue people nowadays with the Panasonic AF have is the lack of phase detection AF. They only rely on contrast AF. The result of that is a pumping AF. You can see it in pretty much all of your talking head shots in the background. I loved my G9, especially for ergonomics, but I sold it because of the af. And there is nothing you can do about it. (beside manual af) I recently bought a GX880, but just for stills.

This camera is a bit of a fail for me, the lack of stabilisation is baffling for a vlogging camera and with other systems using far more capable AF systems it's about time Panasonic made the switch too. Also if budget allows I'd recommend the full frame, image stabilised Lumix S5 which is smaller than both a G9 and GH5. For the budget conscious this is a a solid choice though. Great vid.
@WhoIsSerafin
3 жыл бұрын
I would agree on the stabilization for this camera for bloggers. But it is capable for other uses. As for full frame it has it’s uses no doubt but none for ME and how I shoot. Like how you compared it to the G9 and body size. Yes the G9 is slightly bigger but the stabilization is still superior. The lenses are still far, far more smaller compared to those full frame ones. And for my style of shooting bokeh is not the end all be all but getting more of everything in focus. And lastly I really have no use for video except the occasional quick one which I prefer on my Olympus anyways.

I felt the G9 was huge when I got it too. Not sure if I'm over it yet. I do love a small M43 full featured camera. If you don't fancy the G100, there's the G85 or G95 which are smaller than the G9, but still pack a good punch. Or even the Gx9, which I also considered. But no mic jack on that one. :( Thanks for the tip about DxO software.) I have looked at their sales page a couple times. Hmmm. I don't shoot many raw files though, but I might have to try some raw birding photos with my G9 and test out that software. If it worked for jpgs I'd jump on it. I will ponder some more...

The Sony ZV1 looks like a great option as well, but being able to swap lenses would be nice. Added note: the new Panasonic 9mm 1.7 might be a great lens for this.

Hi Gordon, Yes, I'm still very happy with the G100. I have two of them. I have the Leica 15mm f1.7 and it's a great small choice. Small and sharp! But I'm very tempted to get the 9mm. I probably will eventually. I'll wait a few months until it drops a bit in price. I would likely use it for skateboarding shots. I basically use my 7-14mm f/4.0 all the time for that, but a faster 9mm would suit me too! I've heard great things about that Sony, but haven't tested it myself. Check in with the DP Review guys about the Sony or the OM5 III. Or hopefully find some other KZitemrs who can give you some advice. I use my G100s for mostly photos, but I do love the fun video features like time lapse and S&Q modes. I wish my G9 had S&Q. It has variable frame rate, but the S&Q is so fast to set up. That's actually my favourite video feature and I use it for B-Roll and just making fun skateboarding videos. Most people use their phones for that stuff, but I'm not a fan. I prefer a larger sensor with better tonal range and capabilities of the M43 compared to iPhones. Okay well, I hope this has given you some info. It's no secret that I'm a Lumix fangirl, but also I haven't experienced too many other cameras in the last 8-10 years. So keep that in mind. Thanks for popping by! Cheers.

I know you won't like this Marlene but without direct access to a human - in person - who could help me figure it out (Thanks for nothing Covid!!) I decided to send it back and try the Sony ZV-1. If I still can't get that system to work as I like I will consider returning the ZV-1 and getting a G100 again - in which case my only option will be to learn a new way of making my videos. After doing over 1000 videos I am quite set in my ways, so I don't want to change, but it might end up being the only option. I REALLY want to find a camera that does very good autofocus of moving objects in macro video - quite the specific need that is likely not requested all that often. Manual macro focus for stills would be totally fine, but that isn't my bread and butter. For several reasons I prefer the specifications of the G100 which is why it was my first choice.

@@ImageMaven Well now, I feel like a complete Yo-Yo, going back and forth and up and down. I returned the Sony too, and I am back with the G100. It was worth the restocking fees (since renting these cameras was not available to me anyway, so I caulk it up to research). There are two things I think are hugely superior on the Sony: 1. it can be powered via USB indefinitely with a power bank. No need to stop mid-shot and swap out a battery. It is not hard or too cumbersome to tether it to a battery bank. I wish the G100 had this feature. 2. the product focus feature. on a video sitting in front of the camera you can place something in front of the camera and it will focus on it right away (speed of focal change is adjustable) and as soon as you put it down its back on your face - this works better than on the Lumix. Why I gave up on the Sony? It performed a bit worse than the G100 with my main product table-top downward view section of video - my bread and butter. So I went back to the G100 and found it on sale for $150 less than when I first purchased it a month ago, so the cost of switching back and forth was much less than I thought it would be. I got paid by KZitem a couple of days ago and now I have enough to order the 30mm lens and I am convinced I will love it, with the ability to easily change focus manually with the lens ring when I want extreme close ups I believe I will be VERY happy. BUT to confirm is the model of the 30m lens this exact one - the H-HS030 ? I'll have to buy more batteries, but I think it will be worth the price. THANK YOU so much for your help and encouragement. Panasonic should make you an official Ambassador of the LUMIX line of cameras.
@CanadianCuttingEdge
3 жыл бұрын
Oh and another question, with my setup and the 30mm lens, can you approximate the amount of space I would have between the table top and the front of the lens when I am doing my main video. You can use a ruler as a stand in - I would need to be able to see between 9 or 10 inches width of table in the shot - in 1080P (I don't think I will do 4K anytime soon, I don't have a computer with the editing power for 4K) If I won't have enough lens clearance I don't want to waste my time getting a lens I won't get much use out of. (I do live off a small fixed disability pension, so funds are quite tight, but I am wiling to invest in good equipment because doing KZitem is my main distraction from my health issues and it fills my days with something productive.)

I don't think Heygo works with anything but a phone. I looked at their setup and I don't think you could use an external camera for it. It's specifically designed for mobile cameras. Also I think it would be a tricky setup with a camera and an phone. The phone would have to be mounted on the hotshoe of the camera, which isn't impossible. But the software to run Heygo and run the Lumix G100 as a webcam would likely not talk to each other. Ease of use is another thing. Heygo would have to enable use of other cameras. Example is Zoom. It can be used with a webcam, mobile camera, or external larger camera. But typically people using Lumix cameras for livestreaming are doing so in a studio setting with an OBS type switcher (if using multi-camera setups). But if I find anything else out, I'll let you know. Sorry I couldn't be your hero today!

Hi Merry! 12 mm (24 equiv) has traditionally been called a wide angle lens. But if you want even wider you can go with the 7-14mm f4.0. I have that lens and it's super fun. But not cheap! And a bit large for this small camera body. You might want to check out the Laowa lineup of Lumix compatible lenses. They're affordable and fun. I do have a cheap lens cap lens that is 8mm and it's not super sharp, and it's manual focus and only f/8 but for roughly $100 it's also fun to have in the toolbox. Top of those is the G9 but for me it's a tie with the G100 as I love a small full featured camera. I haven't used the G85 so I can't compare. Sorry couldn't be more helpful. It's personal. Much like a car, you need to drive it to be sure.

I am quite a newbie. I have ordered a G100, in large part because of your video. I have spent months looking and researching and your video clinched the decision for me. I need a good macro lens for indoor closeup shots, both stills and video, and some very close up shots like something that is 1cm wide to fill the whole shot. what lens is a great choice on a budget, and if its not a hands down winner what would be a second choice for a bit more money? thanks for your help.
@ImageMaven
3 жыл бұрын
It will be hard to find a lens that will take a 1cm area and fill the screen. One thing to consider is cropping. For photos that's easy because you can shoot with the largest file size and crop after. For video, you could shoot in 4K mode and edit in 1080p and then you'll get a substantial amount of cropping available on your video clips without any loss of quality. As for lenses, look at these from Panasonic. The 30mm - www.panasonic.com/ca/consumer/cameras-camcorders/interchangeable-lenses/micro-four-thirds/h-hs030.html And the 45mm: www.panasonic.com/ca/consumer/cameras-camcorders/interchangeable-lenses/micro-four-thirds/h-es045.html Olympus also has some Macro lenses that might do. The Olympus 60mm F2.8 is very good. And there are other cheaper options like extension tubes and close up filters but they get rather clunky in the studio and image quality isn't great with the close up filters. Give the folks at The Camera Store in Calgary a call. Or visit them if you're close to Calgary. They will be able to give you some macro options as well. They have the Olympus 60mm in stock, as well as the Panasonic 30mm and 45mm macro lenses. And keep in mind that macro lenses can be used for "regular" photos and videos too. The 30mm will be great for when you're in front of the camera as it's a nice normal focal length with no distortion.

Yes handheld. I’m always on the move. Stabilization is never an issue for photos as I use fast shutter speeds. For video there’s e-stabilization. It’s not great, but I don’t shoot a ton of video with this camera. But I do shoot b-roll a lot using slow motion in the S&Q mode.
