That is a great thought! It turns out that the moon orbits the earth angled about 5 degrees away from the ecliptic, which is the plane in which the earth orbits the sun. Because of this, the moon only passes directly between the earth and the sun (causing a lunar eclipse) when its plane intersects with the ecliptic, which is much less common.

Lunar eclipse only happens during a full moon. Solar eclipse only happens during a new moon
