Hate to break it to you, but Nail and his discount angel's tear was a thing in Complete. Your complaints about the combat, where movement was needed to do basic melee attacks, is a staple of the first two games.

I've always said that Lunar's strength was in its' characters. They're the glue that ties everything together, and the game, while definitely serviceable, would be far weaker without them. Mixing traditional western role-playing character archetypes with contemporary Japanese personality archetypes was a stroke of genius on Studio Alex's part. None of this is to say that other elements, like music, or story aren't noteworthy, however. Lunar really is the platonic ideal of an RPG, and deserves its' spot on any list of classic, old-style JRPGs, hanging with such greats as Phantasy Star, Breath of Fire, Grandia, or the pre-FFVII Final Fantasies. Highly, highly recommended, though the Sega CD and PS1 remakes get my personal vote for best versions.

Can you explain why do you think the Sega CD and PS1 remakes are the best? I want to play Lunar for the very first time and I haven’t decided yet which version I want to play.

@@rolux4853 Sega CD, for nostalgia, mostly. They came from a sort of halcyon era for video games and it's really hard to divorce them from that for me. They do have phenomenal soundtracks, though, it must be said, and I don't think either games' Sega CD versions got proper soundtrack releases. The PS1 versions are more polished, expanded, have better sound and visuals (typical remake stuff), and have really slick animated cinemas. Some people take issue with a few of these changes, saying they don't feel faithful to the originals, but whenever I want to replay Lunar, I reach for my PS1 versions. Unfortunately, you might be out of luck with the Sega CD versions. Long since out of print, only playable on a Sega CD, your only option might be emulation, and I'm not sure what that's like; I've played around with PS1 emus, and I've noticed that games that have Red Book audio (such as Wipeout XL, or Rage Racer) won't actually play the music when emulated. Lunar 1 and 2 on Sega CD used Red Book audio as well, so I'm not certain if it'd the case for those too. That said, you're in luck with the PS1 versions; it was recently announced that they will be getting remastered for PS4 and Switch (maybe other consoles too).

Great video breakdown. There are not many reviews on this version of the game. Thank you for spending the time to review it.

Loved what they did for the PSP port, but the one thing I hated & never forgave was the dub job they did. The dub on the PS1 version was far better than the PSP. Even Luna's Boat Song was far better in the old PS1 version!

This game on my s22 and kishi V2 with upscaling is like an HD remake of this game. Still holds up till this day.

Although it may not have the greatest battle mechanics, the story of this game is simply amazing.

I'd beg to differ. It had a nice system and held up for years. It's still a great game and looks amazing upscaled on emulators.

Nice video! I bet the reason the music stops during loading is because it's streaming the music off the disc. Sometimes chip tunes can be nice because they can keep playing while other data loads. Even if they don't quite sound as good.

I first played LSS on the PS1, and I really fell in love with it, the characters, the story, music. When I finished the game, It really made me sad, like the feeling of not seeing your friend again. I hope someone makes a remake of this or a new story or anything on current gen (imagine genshin style lunar minus the gacha XD ) . anyway, I am having a hard time finding another game as good as LSS these days.

@MarcoArielMavilTorres I disagree, I think EB is a little better than SS, but keep in mind I absolutely love SS and it's close, but EB gives you one of the best epilogues in an rpg of all time. @orenji13 I know what you mean about feeling like you can't see a friend you had fun with, but I think it would be a mistake to upgrade the game to a Genshin esque game. Most of the fans of this series would feel offput, I think. I think sticking to the roots more but with an update. Like make the game in 2.5D or 2DHD. I think many series tend to lose what endeared them to us when they go off the rails, like the remake of Lufia 2. I say keep it familiar with updated mechanics. is the route to go, but that's just my opinion.

I played the PSX remake of Silver Star Story, and it disappointed me to learn that the version you played had oversimplified combat. The PSX version was tough but doable. While the standard dungeon monsters were all set at fixed levels which you could level out of by grinding, the boss battles were always scaled to be a bit above your party's level. This gave a pretty good balance between those two type of leveling/battling experiences, and it led to some pretty memorable boss fights. I still think the final boss in that version was one of the best designed boss battles of any JRPG.

Unfortunately, combat is broken by the speed stat bug - the speed stat is totally ignored, meaning turn order is basically randomized

It's annoying that you can only buy them for the PSP ON THE PS3 today and all other versions are abandonware at this point. Really with that requirement the barrier to entry makes the PSP version practically abandonware as well.

You can still buy it on Vita too, or at least on PS3 and then play on Vita. That's what I did I also wish PSP games were more accessible though

Honestly It got worse when they brought it to the PlayStation- I don't have experience with the PSP version though so I'll withold judgement. The wind nocturne deserves all the praise in the world but the game's original storyline which was stronger was basically sacrificed on the altar of a true goose bumps inspiring piece of music. it is a great song, it doesn't deserve the storyline that created it.
