Casting off from an unknown land Sailing out across the foam The gently blowing winds Pass behind my open ears Whispering that they can hear Please, won't you tell me what you know Is it everyone or just me? Who lives with worry tucked away Deep beneath the layers of their heart What's it like to truly love someone for sure? And to gain their undying love in return? How often I wonder what that's like Is it really, something which, I am sure to find? Basking in the blue star's gentle light As it fills the darkened void A simple melody, forgotten in my childhood Passes softly from my lips Why does such disquiet fill my soul? My inner thoughts stray aloud As line after line of verse trails Out across the turbulent eve What's it like to truly love someone for sure? And to gain their undying love in return? How often I wonder what that's like Because I just don't know These were feelings welling from deep within How I want so much just to cherish them Could it be that fate is playing me Teasing me? Yet It's just the wind

An accurate translation usually doesn't turn out to be a good song on its own. I mean, what are the chances that will happen if you just translate foreign lyrics verbatim then put it in a specific melody? This one's not a good English song.

Sadly I have to admit that I too prefer the old lyrics, If you have not heared or know of the original japanese text then the old song has a much more emotional message. I'm not talking about the singing here. But I do not get the melancholic feeling with this version as I do with the original. But everyone has his right to prefer one over the other, so please enjoy this one if this is your preference.

@@pepengpantal1363 Much as I'd like to disagree, this song, like many faithfully translated songs, was simply not written to fit the translated language. It doesn't quite scan, as if they're trying to fit a poem to a preexisting and unrelated melody. And yet this is exactly what I wanted from this.

@@timvangenechten5258 I just wish it was about at least the same thing. The WD version, as much as I love it is the most generic of hope songs and it doesn't make sense for Luna at that point in the game. It's THE turning point for her love story with Alex, falling in love and not being sure about it, what these new feelings are. None of that comes across in the WD version
@magicalhamster

I feel like the lyrics of this version better reflect a teenage girl's mind. My mind was full of romantic nonsense angst like this at Luna's age. I feel like the original is better at communicating the thoughts in a thematic sense, but it has less authenticity -- it's more theatrical. I guess if I had to lay down a verdict I'd say that the original is a stronger scene overall, but this version is way better at humanizing Luna. And I've clearly thought about this way too much ; )

Of course Vic Ireland would say that. He's always had a heightened opinion of himself, and he loves taking waaaaaaay more liberties than necessary when it comes to translations. To be fair, "Luna's Boat Song" (he couldn't even be bothered to use the actual title of the song) actually makes sense and seems to have actual depth compared to the intro and Rondo Light and Shadow (I'm still waiting on an explanation for "When the comet pulls the bow, the stars begin their dance").

@Hizke Didn't say that. I stated my own opinion which is that the old song was much better (because it was), and it feels pretty crappy to change a classic game song like that one for the remake launch of the game. It would be like if they did a relaunch of Final Fantasy VIII and changed all the lyrics in 'Eyes on Me'. Sorry, but that's not gonna fly, even if it is Nobuo Uematsu doing it and it's the same singer as the original. Songs like that are part of what helps to define these games.

Now I love the first English version of this song...but what people need to remember is that was not even the original song. Let's look at this from a critical standpoint. The PS1 version may be the original, with great lyrics and great musical accompaniment, but the singing is a bit lacking, plus it can be a bit cheesy at times. (Desperately!) Whereas the PSP version has MUCH better singing and even better background music, if that's possible, the lyrics are a bit clunky, and feel a bit forced. Overall, though, I have to say I prefer the PSP version a little better. Why? Because it has an actual soul.
