I recently got a Polish one from the 1980's that basically looked exactly the same. I was curious how to use it so grateful to see this video. Smacznego! (as we say here)

Thanks for commenting on my video. Your videos are also so much fun that I forget to watch them in time. I have a German army mess kit, but I only use East German army mess kit. This is because it is more convenient than the West German army mess kit. Just my opinion on how to use it. The area of Japan where I live is in the off-season for camping due to the upcoming subtropical climate. However, I'm going to enjoy the outdoor life as much as possible, using hammocks and such. Please continue to post fun videos.

The model has been around since 1935 and was used almost equally in both German armies. There are minor differences to the 1935 model. The same three containers and about 1. 5 liters of contents of the large container, in war or later. Each line is 1/2 liters. In the Bundeswehr, the lid is used for drinks such as coffee, tea or water. The bowl for dessert, bread or meat. Ideal is the main container for stew and other dishes to be eaten with a spoon.

looking at the lugs on the big pot that the bail handle attaches to and the indent on the bottom of the big pot makes me think that you`ve got a West German kit

If you swap the handle of the main pot to the other side, it would lock into a 90° angle and it would't get hot.

The mess Kit could be from the NVA or the THW. The NVA ist the East German Army ("Nationale Volksarmee=National Folksarmy"). The THW ("Technisches Hilfswerk=technical Help Work") is the civilian protection of West Germany (dont know how it should be called in english). Some years ago they got the military issued stuff, but in blue-grey ("Luftwaffengraublau"). I would say its from the NVA, cause I saw two from THW yet and they we're darker and less "reflective". Hope I could help you, sorry for my bad english and greetings from Germany!

@@JohnGoesWalkabout West German is marked "BUND" in grey for THW or Fire Department if the cold war became a hot war. After the cold war the Federal Republik sold these mess kits. The German word for Federal Republik ist "Bundesrepublik" so they marked "BUND" like U.S.A. marked G.I.

I think ist vor civil use "Katastrophenschutz". I have one in grey an it is marked "BUND". It was produced e.g. the cold war became a hot war.
