Thanks for this neat little peak into the art of Bento making. I've been seeing this nifty lunchboxes in the homeschooling community and was giving it some thought now that Earth Day sales are closing. I decided to go straight for the Launch. My 3 yo will be so glad to have a way to cover his food when he hasn't finished it all.

I don't have to pack lunches anymore, but your lunchboxes inspire me. They are a feast for the eyes and make me crave fruits and veggies. I've gotten so many good food ideas watching your channel and have upped my fruit and veggie intake. Bento boxes are something I love too, esp all the cute items made for them. One I didn't notice on your table is an egg mold. You place a peeled, still hot, hard boiled egg into the mold, put it in the fridge to get cold, and it comes out shaped and embossed. There are animal molds, shapes like stars, even Hello Kitty. There are also molds for rice/sushi. You pack in any fillings and the rice, chill and unmold. I love rice balls, with some tuna/mayo in the center. AND they freeze beautifully so you can make them ahead. You can wrap a strip of nori around them when you serve/eat them. There are also punches for nori: you can punch out fun shapes and faces for the sushi, which makes it fun for kids of all ages.

Dinahsoar I’m so glad I can have a positive influence re: the fruits and veggies! That’s so wonderful to hear! It’s funny! I do have a set of those egg molds but I have never tried them. Now you’ve inspired me! I have rolled my own rice balls before and the girls are very enamored!

We don’t have the planet box but we have bentgo kids and the yumbox. I prefer having two per child, so one can run through the dishwasher and one can be pack at night. But we also have a lot of lunch supplies. I recently bought bentgo kids and yum boxes as birthday gifts for my nieces who will start preschool in the fall. Their moms wanted it early so they can use them for outings in the summer too

I have a set of Chicago Cutlery knives I received 50 years ago. They sit on my kitchen counter and I can't cook without them. Daddy gave them to me when I got married b/c he was a chef (at the country club or a cook when he owned his own restaurant: the local family diner) and he knew how important good knives are. He taught me how to care for them (don't let them soak in the dish water and keep them sharpened). I use mineral oil (it won't go rancid like other oils) on the block and handles periodially and they look as good as new. They have served me well. Daddy is gone now, but I always think of him when I use my knives. Food and family was his life and that rubbed off on me. Food being a necessity also makes a nice hobby: it feeds the belly and the soul.

One thing, I will warn you is they eat more as they age. Boys more than girls but girls too. My son is moving up from a 10 oz thermos to 16 oz and from kid size bento to an adult size bento. My daughter is still a little eater. I also think they give you so many silicone liners that I don’t find I use that many. I have full silicone cupcake pans for baking. So I split my set up in threes and handed the extra to my sils who are just getting started in the school lunch thing. The reason we are all doing this so late in the year, is schools just opened up for two days a week on the east coast

Do you make your hubby a cute lunch like this? I love your lunches.

Yes! (When I can get him out of the house! Normally he works from home). On most days he warms up leftovers with great joy! I'm so glad you like the lunches. My husband is always the odd man out when he does take a lunch -- it's weird. Usually he is the boss on his projects, and everyone under him is out spending their money by eating out. We are frugal sort of people, which is atypical in many parts of LA.

Those lunches are amazing! Can you explain why you eat Kosher? Sorry, I am not very familiar with kosher eating at all, but it looks amazing!

One Happy Frugal Family thank you! So truth be told we don’t keep kosher at all. Based on a few laws in the Torah, rabbis have extrapolated over time that kosher eating involves not mixing milk and meat (meat and dairy meals are kept separated). Fish (save for shellfish and other bottom feeders like catfish) and eggs are ok in either type of meal. Meat wise - no meat from an animal without a split hoof that chew their cud (so pork is out) and to be truly kosher, meat needs to be slaughtered and butchered humanely (there are detailed guidelines much like halal meat) and with rabbi supervision. Plenty of Jews don’t keep kosher, or keep varying degrees of kosher, including eating “kosher style” (meat isn’t butchered kosher but folks aren’t mixing it with dairy - so no cheeseburgers for example), or “ingredients kosher” (doesn’t need rabbi supervision or a kosher label on the food, so long as it doesn’t contain milk and meat together or shellfish or pork). Then there are people who keep kosher at home (out of respect for more religious family, often), but will eat shrimp out at a restaurant. Other Jews just become vegetarians so as to avoid the kosher law concerns altogether. For us, we never gave kosher eating a consideration until my daughter started attending Jewish school (and was super sad I wasn’t packing bacon in her lunchbox). Mainly my channel is about packing healthy and delicious lunches, but I also started my channel and blog to help other moms like me (or in a similar boat as me) who are terrified they are doing something wrong and want some ideas that will be “safe” to send to a Jewish setting. I have lots of followers who are Jewish or Christian of some kind, married to Jews, or converts. Others are just hungry people! LOL! 🤣
