August is an important month for the pro-democracy movement in the Philippines. It gives us the time that we Filipinos need, especially in these very difficult times, to reflect on the importance of cherishing our democracy, and remember those who fought for its very survival. We remember President Benigno Aquino III forty days since his passing, President Corazon C. Aquino, on the twelfth anniversary of her passing, and Senator Benigno S. Jr. on the 38th anniversary of his assassination.
Here members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) render military honors to their former Commander in Chief, President Cory Aquino, during her funeral in August 2009. With the customary four ruffles and flourishes, the national anthem of the Philippines, "Lupang Hinirang", is played during the departure honors at the Manila Cathedral. The pro-democracy anthem, "Bayan Ko", is then played as the late president's funeral procession through the streets of Metro Manila commenced. The funeral procession would last eight hours, as 200,000+ Filipinos from all walks of life brought Cory home to be with her beloved Ninoy.
