Good idea to cut the old hooks off and add a split ring. The regular hooks are pretty solid but they seem like they might rust out quick. Great video!

To avoid unscrewing the hardware from the body, cut off the hooks with the snippers on some needle nose pliers. That's what I just did. Worked no problems. Make sure to get the hook into the inside corner of the pliers to get max torque, and you should be able to clip the top of the loop off. Watch your eyes for flying hooks, or drape with a cloth.

@connor morier I like jigs and square bill crankbaits. Jigs because you can toss them way back underneath the dock and square bills because to can run them into the dock struts/cables.

@Moyniac I would say clear water because it's mostly a chrome bait. Chrome baits reflect a lot of light and that reflection is more visible in clear waters. You could have some luck in murky water though.
@KevinBullington
12 жыл бұрын
@tscr6 Chrome baits in almost every brand chip and flake rather easily including Lucky Craft. I think these companies have a hard time getting the chrome to stick to plastic as chrome is meant to stick to metal. Companies do get the chrome to stick to plastic obviously, but under the "abuse" of fishing, the chrome doesn't stand up as well as paint. Water slide transfer decals are the most durable. Thanks for watching.

Nice review man you are always nice and thorough with all your reviews. Are you happy with VMC aftermarket hooks? I ask because I'm in the process of swapping a lot of hooks before the season and every pack of VMC trebles I've ever played with at the store aren't very sharp at all but the ones on my Rapala and Storm stuff are usually pretty good. Just wondering if you have any input on whether or not I should get VMC's and save some money or go with Gami's or Owner ST-36's. Your thoughts would be much appreciated. Tight lines

Great Baits! Another thing I do to them is that I get some marine grade epoxy glue. Then when I put the eyelets back in after changing the hook, I put a little marine epoxy on the threads. Makes them last YEARS. I'll also do that to the line tie loop. In fact, this is a good thing to do to any bait that uses threaded eyelets. Jitterbugs, Spooks, ect... If you have issues with the rear hook hitting the prop, put some shrink tubing on the eyelet to the hook. It holds it out and away.

This has been my most successful top water bait for bass in NY state. Often overlooked bait in the top water category. Can't tell you how many times I've been fishing in a group of people all fishing top waters with various other baits like spooks, buzz baits, etc... and I'm using the 3/8 oz baby torpedo, and I end up being the only one getting bit. I cast it out, let it sit for 5-10 seconds.. then a stop & start retrieve with 1 or 2 jerks thrown in randomly. Bass just slam it. I've had luck with both the 1/4oz and 3/8oz versions. The bullfrog, leopard frog and black shiner colors have worked the best for me. The racket these things make combined with the wake that comes off the back of it make it an incredible top water option that like I said, is highly overlooked / underrated.

@johnjameson15 It's not a must at all. I've caught plenty of fish with the factory hooks. However, changing the hooks may land you more fish because of the addition of split rings. Split rings allow the lure to move more freely while hooked to the fish which won't allow the fish to get as much leverage on the lure to throw the hook.

I do all sorts of stuff with mine. I'll walk it sometimes. Or I'll pop it under the water. Or do a little pull. And I'll almost always get a strike. My torpedo is the most versatile lure in my arsenal and I dont know what I'd do without it. The only thing I wish is that I had more calm days to sit and use it. Its so hard to find a good day to use a top water in my area

True, if you want to use a buzzbait, you can always fish with a buzzbait, HOWEVER, if you alread have a torpedo tied on, you can fish it that way as well. You don't have to switch rods or tie on a new bait. And if a pattern arises, you can always move to a buzzbait.

+Robert Brandywine Hi Robert. Oh yes I use this lure. Luck 13, very nice old lure. I have caught a lot of fish with them. It all depends on where and when you how you fish it. I live in Florida and use it in Salt water for Snook, Tarpon and Reds. Also caught a lot of big bass with it. But this is in Florida. Where do you fish it?
@robertbrandywine
8 жыл бұрын
Gary Bristow I have used it only for largemouth bass. I think I was drawn to it because of covers of F&S and Outdoor Life back in the '50s and '60s where it was often presented in the mouth of some lunker. After trying and failing with it I moved on to the Rebel Pop-R and Storm Chug Bug, both of which have given much better results.
@garybristow7800

Oh yes I also use the storm Chug Bug and the Rebel. Chug Bug one of my favorites. Great for Bass. I use these a lot. I understand the lucky 13 is a lot larger. If you are fishing a area where you know there are bigger bass feeding the larger lure will work well. Also depends on the time of day etc. And most my fishing is done in the south. Not sure about up north how the bass will react to it.
