"This is your pilot, Juan Browne. Welcome aboard Mighty Luscombe Airlines! We have a short flight today departing Nevada County Airport and arriving at Nevada County Airport in about an hour. We should have a pretty uneventful flight today: we will be simulating an engine failure on takeoff, perform a couple of stalls, and land repeatedly at our destination before finally deplaning. So sit back and relax while I work on my requalification during the flight. We know you have many air carrier options at Nevada County Airport so thanks for choosing MLA!"

At 2:50, you said "It's like putting on a well-worn pair of shoes" and you'd only been out for less than 2 years. A few years ago, I had the opportunity to fly the same Aeronca Champ that I had from 1970 to 1974 and it was that exact same feeling. Other than the door threshold being a lot higher than it was 40 years earlier, it felt like I'd only been away a week. Turns still came out on heading and on altitude and big slips were just as fun. Some things you just don't forget.

Never had the pleasure of flying a Luscombe. Have about 250 hrs in Cessna 140. Flew fire patrol here in East Texas for the Forestry Service back in '66. The one I flew had C170 wings on it. If memory serves, 52 gals of fuel. Staying up 8 hrs was no problem. So long ago.

Damn I enjoyed that! Not a pilot, flown in a few puddle jumpers, worked on aircraft in the Air Force, had a run up taxi license on T38A's but never really enjoyed flying in small planes. But being a avid motorcycle rider for 45 yrs plus mostly turning on a Goldwing now days this video reminds me why I recently bought a Harely Iron 883 to ad to my stable. Back to basics! I would have loved the old school flying...no computers just you and the machine. Loved it....

When we got to the point where she reminded: "Spar Seven Zero, by this time your landing gear should be down and locked," one pilot looked at the other and said; "Yeah, down and welded..." - waw -

It's a good idea to always do the "from memory " checks out loud. It helps to focus on actually performing the checks, means you are less likely to accidentally skip an item, and also ensures that when you go for a check ride the instructor/examiner knows you actually did the checks instead of accidentally doing them all in your head and him/her thinking you didn't do them.
@MrFurriephillips

@@TheAverageDutchman I did similar in my driving test. I failed the first time, because of "undue hesitation" (those bastards marked me down for being cautious, on a blind junction, over a humped-back bridge, after almost being wiped out by a madman coming the other way), touching the kerb on the reversing around the corner (my confidence had gone & I was panicky), and most annoyingly, "not using my mirrors", which was BS, but I had them set up perfectly, so I could glance with my eyeballs, rather than exaggerated head movements. I was salty about that when my 2nd test came around, so I told the tester that I was unfairly judged to have not used my mirrors in the previous test, because I had adjusted them perfectly & precicely, and to prevent further injustice, I would be announcing the word "MIRROR", whenever I used the mirrors - it was hilarious!

The sheer joy of seeing you back in the Luscombe. I was grinning ear to ear through the whole video. I'm so glad you're coming through the prostate mess, I started out last year with that, and the biopsy came back clean. That was good until the biopsy on my leg turned out to be a sarcoma. Three weeks at Stanford, three at VA nursing facility ih Reno. and a total of six surgeries this year and six weeks of radiation. All due to agent orange. It's beautiful to see you overcome the trials that have been put before you this past year, and your attitude has been really inspirational. Hope to see you flying the triple seven soon.

The 1st plane I ever flew was an Aeronca 7A. Only one gas tank. It was mounted between the engine and the dash. The gas gauge was a float with a wire sticking through the fill cap. There was a little piece of tape on the wire that indicated we were down to 5 gallons. That was a really fun plane to fly.

Beautiful! My Dad (RIP) learned to fly in a Luscombe just like yours (at Bill Gibbs in San Diego… earned flight time by washing airplanes and whatever else Bill asked him to do)! It all led to him getting his Pilots License at 14 and his stint with SAC, and the National Air Guard after his initial commitment. It also led him to buy a Cessna 206 later in life that proved to be much joy for all of us. I would love to get my hands on a Luscombe one day. Great to see you’re back up where you belong!

Finally he got a 2 window 1948 Bonanza, which ended the grass fields. He was always a VFR pilot. He and I flew to a lot of places. Enjoy your return to flying.
