Hey Science Babes! I did not comment on the fragrance in this line, as I thought it was pretty clear that Lush contains a lot of heavily fragranced items. A lot of you are not bothered by fragrance/ EOs and a lot of are you are sensitive to them. I realize this is an oversight on my part but based on the ingredients lists if you react poorly to fragrance and essential oils, Lush products may not be for you. "Fragrance in Skincare" video is coming your way soon!

I hope you talk about the difference in scented products on the face, and on the body! Most skincare advice is only about the face, but we usually don't need to be as careful with body products. Sometimes you just want to use a scented body lotion, is that as sensitising as it is for the face?

as a former lush employee, i thought this was amazing! you've covered so many things that i tried to always stress with customers -- having a well-researched knowledge base makes for the best relationship to one's skin. the employee training used to have an intense trichological focus (that was the owner's background), which for me was the best aspect of working there. i don't know if they still have that drive, but i'm hopeful that every employee can explain why an ingredient is in a product, ie zea mays oil in let the good times roll as a tocopherol or whatever. the fragrance/dye situation was not my fantasy for inclusion in products, and explaining to customers that they're in there always made me feel a little guilty, despite lush not considering themselves "all-natural" or anything. thank you so much for your honest and informed observations!

Natalie Fragrance irritates and inflames skin even without you noticing in the moment. It secretly damages the skin’s surface, promotes ageing, causes collagen to breakdown and hurts the skin’s ability to fight environmental damage. The citrus oils in it are already speeding up the damage on your mom’s face from the suns rays. This is backed by science and can take many, many years to show up! Although your mom has great skin now, it could end up aging her faster than it would without it. I’d still recommend her switching to a fragrance free option! Honestly, you hit the nail on the head on ocean salt. I haven't seen your channel ever before so when you IMMEDIATELY identified the issue me and lush customers have with sea salt I knew you knew exactly what you were talking about. I have worked extensively for lush and many, many, many customers bring ocean salt back due to it burning, reddening, and causing itching on the face. I never thought about the sharpmess the salt crystals adding to the issue. I figured it was salt mixed with lots of citrus and vodka that when mixed with exfoliation caused the issue. I definitely didn't think about that.

I’m glad to hear someone mention the cocoa butter situation. I have very dry skin, face and body, and have tried cocoa butter products. My experiences have always been mixed or not good, the most recent experience was the worst. I tried a well known high cocoa butter content body product (on a recommendation) and my whole body was covered in a thick itchy red rash afterwards. That was from one application. Obviously I discontinued usage immediately but the rash took a couple of days to go away. I did some further research and this is apparently a known possible skin reaction to cocoa butter. I believe it’s a bit like coconut oil in that it has molecules which pass into the deeper layers of the skin quite readily and some of these can cause quite strong reactions.

Hey, just to let you know Lush only have one fragrance that is synthetic: Snow Fairy. Which is only released once a year. Everything else is non-synthetic. They list "fragrance" or "perfume" to protect themselves. As ingredients are listed in order of highest to lowest concentration, they would essentially be giving away their recipe if they went into any more detail than just "fragrance" or "perfume". They have a lot to offer & in purchasing their products they do an awful lot for women in Ghana (who produce the shea butter), who get paid a fair wage, planting of the crops regenerates their land, and their children get a free education on site. That's just from one ingredient: shea butter. Lush have way more details on their website about how your purchases fund & regenerate struggling communities the world over. Please don't discount them based on misinformation or fear. They also have products specifically for folks with sensitive skin. I'm happy to recommend some or you can speak to staff or customer service on the chat feature on the website. I promise I don't work for them haha. I just think as they don't do advertising they need people debunking the misinformation surrounding Lush.

Lush products literally fixed my skin when it was in absolutely terrible condition after my new skincare from the pharmacy. I visited them in Berlin for the first time and let the consultant choose what he thinks is best for my skin, and to this day those products are my favorite (angels on bare skin is one of them). Visiting their stores just makes me so much happier every time :)

Celestial broke me out SO BAD. I just returned it a few days ago and I only used the products for 3 weeks before I started breaking out in small cysts along with whiteheads all along my chin. I’m so thankful you posted this because I was wondering what ingredient could’ve pushed my skin over the edge and the almond oil or coco butter could be it! This made my day, you’re amazing and keep doing what you’re doing 💕💕💕

Even if she did this would be beyond her expertise , this is an issue that should be argued by a dermatologist. She is a biochemist with a focus on cosmetology and extractions involve a technique not really any solutions that she can explain the effect of the ingredients

Most of my acne is hormonal so in the year+ I have been using lush products I haven’t had much bother with them. I use a salicylic acid cleanser that’s separate to the line, but I use the tea tree water toner, dark angels as an exfoliant x2 a week, and a serum and the vanishing cream moisturiser. I really like mask of magnanimity as well. This is so interesting though. I honestly prefer lush for their bath body and hair products, but there aren’t a lot of options for sustainable packaging and cruelty free skincare products here in Ireland

I was gonna ask about all the fragrance, then I read your comment. Curious about your thought on essential oils. I read so much mixed perspectives on things like lavender and rose. Some say they’re very calming, some say they’re very irritating. I believe you said you were into EOs when you made stuff at home so would love a deep dive on that. Thanks for the awesome content!

Just want to post a warning here. I got a body cream/wash from lush that gave me the worst allergic reaction I have ever gotten. Worse than if I spray myself with a ton of straight perfume. My skin swelled up and it looked like someone had literally whipped me all over my body and it had swelled up... Just because it’s “all natural” does not mean that it’s not incredibly irritating for your skin and can cause horrible reactions and also cause you to develop allergies that you did not have before. I think it is because of the high concentration of flower herbs etc. If you see this Kenna what do you think?

Can you please talk shampoos? I have very doily hair that gets dirty in under 24hrs and suffered from dandruff/scaling for a while but after a lot of research I read about teatree oil and salt mixed into shampoos and have seen some results. I also found help in using aloe Vera gels and such. but I would like to hear more from you about the topic. How can I deal with crazy oily hair and skin? Is the inevitable shampoo/ dry shampoo making it worse? Tips for ingredients to look out for in drugstore shampoos? Natural remedies or masks?

Maybe you overwash. I used to have hair that got oily super quickly but at the same time my scalp was very dry. Turned out I washed too often and my shampoo really stripped my hair of the natural oils. Try a nourishing shampoo, if possible a more natural brand. And for the dandruff do an apple cider vinegar rinse. It helps to get the ph-level of the scalp back to normal. Started to do this 3 months back, not a flake of dandruff since :)

For the oily skin, I recommend adding more hydration. If your cleanser is foaming or is one of those acne washes, stop using them as they might dry / dehydrate your skin and make it worse. Also check your products for isopropyl or denatured alcohol (lots of toners and micellar water contain them but also some face masks) Try a cream cleanser and then products with glycerin and hyaluronic acid for the hydrating effect (your skin is most likely dehydrated and over produces sebum. In the evenings a good oil cleanser or even a good face oil can really help (Jojoba and sqalane are both oils very close to your skin's own sebum and can help balancing)

If you ever purchase from Lush again, give Aqua Marina a try. That stuff transformed my skin. It's exfoliating but it's a bit smoother than Angels on Bare Skin and doesn't smell quite as strong as Let the Good Times Roll.
