I've been thinking a fair bit about this lately. For thousands of yrs people were getting married for more practical reasons. Until that last century or so. Then eventually it became for "love" only. And divorce & domestic violence went through the roof by comparison to before. I don't see love being much different than lust anymore. So of course lust is destructive. In my own meditations on this, I’ve reached a secondary conclusion. A man cannot truly unselfishly care about a woman who he wants anything from, especially sex. Excellent point. And so many people (male and female) are shocked when they enter into marriage and find out it isn’t actually a never ending sexual buffet. There are so many seasons of life that couples go through where the well is shallow, or completely dry. As a Christian you have to keep saying yes to loving that person without any “payoff”, and those times reveal so much about one’s true character and capacity for unselfish love.

It's always interesting to me how people think that what THEY understand the nuanced meaning of a word to be is what the actual meaning is. Despite the fact that everyone grows up differently and uses/hearts language used in a different set of contexts and circumstances. Not to mention that people are often trying to communicate very nuanced things within a wider context than just the specific and precise meaning of the individual words. It seems to me that they're speaking of religious matters and hence referring to "lust" as a nod to the religious usage of the word. Rather than, say, having a simple discussion of lust as a psychological pathology in a modern context. I feel like those who nitpick grammar and word usage almost always have a lack of self-awareness and yet perhaps a little bit too much self-centeredness. The idea that "The way I believe the world to be is definitively the way that the world is." Belief is necessary but so is understanding that others believe differently and they just might have something of value to add to your worldview.

I'm listening and simultaneously pondering... That I don't fully understand why people feel the need to instruct other adults on the issues of celibacy, monogamy, heterosexuality. Now, don't lump the issue of Parents instructing their children into my statement. That's self- evident; in the term, " parent ". In continuing: adults acquire understanding, sympathy, compassion for people that are sharing familiar struggles. Can the average person sympathize with the astronaut that suffered the immense pressures of G- forces during his space flight? No, because a G- forces experience doesn't naturally occur as a problem to people while walking and bicycling... Does the average adult experience selfishness? Yes. That's why it's exhibited in possessiveness. "You're mine, we're married." ... "Don't look at my wife like that. " On the flip side... the person that you feel the greatest attraction to; is likely to be the person that you'll choose to spend the most time with (... unless the feelings aren't mutual). That appears to be the biggest cause for divorce... People change interests and the neglected party seeks somebody who won't change interests (rapidly? ... er, ....as rapidly? ... uh... with less frequency? ... um, ... habitually? ...? ). That being the case: "there's no vow, no marriage contract... that can guarantee you or the other parry in the contract; that your interest or, their interest won't wane to an unbearable level over the course of a lifetime ." One could vow; "that they earnestly would prefer that they'll be able to maintain a satisfactory level of interest", at best. That simply just doesn't bear the same connotation to the dramatic emphasis of... "the until death do we part" declaration of unwavering devotion. But, you think " that itt is best" : preferable... for a stable society... that it should keep up appearances; in pretending that " it's a normal course of action to maintain monogamy for a lifetime"? ...Then penalize divorce seekers with high legal fees and (loser's) guilt; for deviating from the prescribed norm - although it's a facade at best and a hurtful lie at face value? Adults have proven that their attention span isn't as developed as we would like to believe. The attention span of a 3yo is not as great as a 14yo... a 20 yo typically has a slightly longer attention span than a 14yo... but the next big level of maturity is noticed among 40yo. and again in 60 yo. Early matrimony is preferable for reproductive purposes when considering fertility rates and optimal health ratios. ...But, that's not an optimal time for making mature decisions about lifelong commitments. Considering the serious nature of making a vow before God. ... as for adults who have discovered some where along their journey... that they have an attraction for the same sex; (even though I don't personally understand it)... ... and I'm fairly certain that they don't even understand, why the opposite sex is unappealing; considering that their only explanation is , "I was born that way" (which I completely discount as a plausible source of origin ). I understand that some would prefer that a stable society (establishing PERMISSIBLE norms ) best not recognize that there are naturally occurring abnormalities... Therefore, celibacy is the dictatorial edict to any free citizen that doesn't have a sexual attraction to the opposite sex. Because, maintaining the facade ; is more healthy for society than maturing and understanding life's variants. ?

I be Brand was like “ffffuck I loved sex, wanted all women, and had no control over myself….ahhh, I miss drugs. What? Ah, yes, I’m a better person now.” Being responsible sucks, especially when you get too old to do those things you did when it was seen as “ok for your age.”

I don't believe either work. Clearly, following your every sexual desire DOES NOT WORK. However, remaining with the same partner loses its attraction (although intimacy does improve). It can't be reconciled. Lose, lose.

Lust is selfish, self serving all about getting. So it won’t be beneficial for anyone… including the one who is lusting. Love is selfless, serving others and all about giving. It is a motive situation. Now being physically attracted is natural, but if one is already married, then turning away from lust is being selfless and giving toward their spouse yet again. It is benefitting all including themselves.

It's easier for theological doctrine to place the emphasis on the lust rather than the responsibility and accountability of the choices you make.

In short lust in and of itself is neutral, the determining factor is how it’s used and how it shows itself. It can destroy relationships or it can allow one to flourish

Nothing wrong with being lustful, or enjoying carnal pleasures as long as they take place in a genuine and loving relationship. Sexuality has been demonized enough for centuries, and unfortunately many ''enlightened'' individuals continue to do so. Embracing your own sexuality is a beautiful divine gift, and no one should be ashamed of it. Human beings are also sexual beings, not just spiritual. Taking out sexuality from the equation, goes entirely against our own nature, and against divine creation. Sexuality is beautiful. Lust is beautiful. Making love is an art, and can be one of the most powerful tools to reach nirvana. There's nothing to be ashamed of, acceptance is the key. God Bless!

The great thing about Brand is that you never have to say "hmmm. Maybe he's right about that." He's either obviously right or laughably and buffoonishly wrong.

He says theological doctrine focus on the control of love. His problem is he's mistaking love for passion. This is a common mistake even our Webster's dictionary definition of Love is passion, strong emotions, lust. But true love is personified in Christ on the cross. This is what true love looks like. Self-sacrifice charity. Quit thinking of Love is libido or drive. Love is a willingness to die for what's true and what's beautiful.

ARRANGED MARRIAGES have a low divorce rate--because of several reasons but one being lust isn’t the deciding factor! I’m not sure I’d want an arranged marriage though?! My marriage lasted until my mate died--and on our Golden anniversary I told him he was still the one that took my breath away! Lust wasn’t what kept us together for all those years, but it damn sure played a part in the union! 😉⚡️

Low divorce rate because the wife has no option to leave being financially dependent on her husband

@@wyleecoyotee4252 I agree, but the union isn’t decided by lust! And if we’re aiming for continuation and reducing divorce--keeping one of the parties dependent on the other is an option! Which doesn’t appeal to me being female at all! But if analyzed giving women a greater means to provide for themselves outside of marriage has created a larger percentage of divorces! Of course that’s not the only thing involved!

Interesting how Dr. Peterson plays with his wedding ring while talking about lust. He appears to almost take it off and he puts it back on....just an observation. Yes to self discipline.
